EASTERN BONELLI'S WARBLER at Skaw, Whalsay!

EASTERN BONELLI'S WARBLER
SKAW, WHALSAY

Found by John Lowrie Irvine

Hugh Harrop very kindly said I could join him on the ferry from Laxo to Whalsay, to go and see the Eastern Bonelli's Warbler. Met Hugh at the ferry terminal and left my car in the carpark – we caught the 10.30am ferry. The only time I have been over to Whalsay, was for the Eastern Olivacious Warbler with Jill and Rob and it wasn't a fun crossing – today's was pretty smooth, thank goodness. The Eastern Bonelli's Warbler was at the far end of the island, in a plantation at Skaw.

Within seconds of getting out of the car, we immediately saw the Eastern Bonelli's Warbler in the plantation, which was flighty and seemingly feeding well. There was a couple and a single man along with Hugh and I, to see this very rare bird. Fantastic birding views, but the light wasn't brilliant for photography at this time of the day. Fabulous bird and a new tick for me! There was a Willow Warbler (singing) and a Chiffchaff in the plantation too and also a Red Grouse distantly in the heather!

EASTERN BONELLI'S WARBLER

Hugh was out of sight and round the end of the plantation, when I turned to see the other two birders walking as fast as they could over the boggy/mossy ground, to check on the lady who was laying on the ground! She had apparently fainted, so I administered first aid (feet up) until the colour came back to her cheeks. She was ok and was able to get up a while later and return to her car with her husband. Hugh arrived on scene, shocked at seeing us all there together in a huddle and thought we were all looking at plant or something! Whilst this had been going on, Hugh had got a fabulous shot – best picture I have seen so far by miles and I doubt if anyone will get a better one! (see Twitter/X here). Caught the 12.45pm ferry back to Laxo, which was another smooth crossing. Huge thanks to Hugh for giving me a lift over there.

Blackbird perched on New Zealand Flax at Da Gairdins

I decided to visit Da Gairdins at Sand, which was about half an hour away. I went for the first time last year and have been wanting to return. These gardens are spectacular and have several nature ponds, many varieties of trees, shrubs and plants and a stunning beach close by. I thought I might find some exciting birds there, but alas only found 1 Blackbird, 1 House Sparrow and 2 Collared Doves. Got a nice photo of a Blackbird singing on top of a New Zealand Flax. Chatted to Ruby who runs and works these spectacular gardens and I remarked how surprised I was to see Sea-buckthorn here (which reminded me of Holme). Went to the beach where I photographed a Wren singing its heart out on a boulder. Black-headed Gull here, a Rock Pipit and a Wheatear.

Horsetail (don't know which one) in the far pond at Da Gairdins

Thank you to one of my blog readers and to John F. on Whalsay for the ID

Wren singing by the beach at Sand

Headed south – stopped at the shop at Bixter and bought a small bag of Kitkat Easter eggs! Not far from Scalloway I stopped and checked out the Burn of Njugalswater, which is SW of the Bridge of Fitch (where the Arctic Warbler was last Autumn) – nothing here at all. Went to Gulberwick to walk along the burn towards Wick House and no birds seen here either. Returned home and lit the fire. I was disappointed to find that I hadn't got one pleasing shot of the Eastern Bonelli's Warbler, oh well, can't get good shots every time! Back to work on Tuesday.

By this time last year, I had had a Hawfinch and a Great Spotted Woodpecker in my garden, but no luck so far this Spring! We don't have Good Friday as a public holiday here in Shetland, but I don't work Friday's in any case, so have four days off!

From the WhatsApp messages today, I presumed the Western Subalpine Warbler was in someone's garden and not for general public viewing, so I didn't attempt to head south after work this evening, as no exact location given, but will check tomorrow, as I may well be wrong – always a lovely bird to see.

Strong Red Alert for the Aurora tonight, but looking on the webcams, it seems to be total cloud cover here, which is a shame. Had a lovely day out working/shadowing two community OTA's today.

Very busy day at work and then drove straight to West Burra and Toogs and spent from 5pm to 8.30pm trying to find the Black-crowned Night Heron. Yes I have seen it, but it was a dot in the distance in my scope on a murky, rainy day. It would be good to even view it at half the distance I did, but luck is not on my side with this bird, after several visits. Several Grey Herons fishing, pair of Red-breasted Mergansers off the pier at the outdoor centre. At Toogs I bumped into Jane again who found a very distant Moorhen with just her bins! Back at the bridge I watched a couple of otters for a few moments before disappearing. A beautiful, but chilly evening and a stunning sunset as I drove home. Not having much luck with trying to get good views of the BCNH – think I might give up now!

Two male Siskins and one Robin in my garden today, along with the usual Starlings, House Sparrows and Collared Doves. Headed south birding. Walked along Swinister Burn and although it was extremely pretty, I didn't see a single bird! Climbed up to the top of the Geosetter Burn at Bigton and apart from 4 Ravens overhead and a couple of Meadow Pipits, no birds seen along the burn at all.

At Clumlie Loch there was no sign of the Purple Heron. Matt W. turned up and we walked along the burn to try and find the Purple Heron. Matt continued on to the cliff edge, but I turned back before this. Had a look at Boddam Voe: Eiders, Redshanks, Turnstones, Mallard and Shelducks here.

The Grutness Garden produced what I presume was the same male Blackcap I saw on Friday and also one Chiffchaff and the pool held a pair of Mallards and a couple of Common Gulls. Drove up to Sumburgh Head where I saw about 4 Wheatears on route. Stood for ages looking for Puffins coming into the cliffs, but only saw them flying distantly over the sea – nobody else had seen them either. Walked to the end of the 'Roses' and the view of the cliffs from here was stunning in the evening light. Fulmars were cruising round the cliffs and Razorbills, Guillemots and Shags also seen.

On West Voe beach I counted 138 Long-tailed Duck on the turquoise sea – it was a magical sight! Parked up to have a quick look at the Pool of Virkie and there was good numbers of waders including lots of Sanderlings, Dunlin, Redshanks, Shelducks, Turnstones and Curlew. Cruised home as the sun was setting.

Light rain, grey skies and foggy here. Robin in my garden this morning. Mossy Hill, produced nothing but thick fog – I could only just about see the sheep! I was hoping to find an Alpine Accentor up there – I last saw one on 30th October 2022 at Blakeney Point. Male Blackcap in the Grutness Garden, no sign of the RFB. Chiffchaff in the garden at Sumburgh Hotel along with four Blackbirds. Went to look for the Purple Heron at Troswick burn, no sign. Had a cruise around Levenwick, no birds of note seen. The day ended well, with finally getting to see the Black-crowned Night Heron from Toogs Pier at West Burra, which is a new bird for me. Met a lovely local birder called Jane who found the BCNH for me, thank you. Sadly though, it was a dot in my scope, so no gripping pictures from me. Fascinating to watch it skulking along the waters edge, searching for food. I really hope to see this again at a closer distance and in better light – such a flamboyant bird! Two Otters were also by the pier, but only seen briefly. South east winds and sunny tomorrow 😊

Note to self: DO NOT book a long hair appointment in the evening after work, at any time between clocks changing in March until Winter time. Roger Riddington found an unusual Spring record of everyone's favourite bird, a flamboyant Red-flanked Bluetail!! They never get boring to watch. I've had many fabulous sightings of bluetails in Norfolk, but its always good to see another one. Obviously when you are working all day, there are always going to be rare birds turning up, but unless its something on the outer islands, you have a pretty good chance of seeing it after work at this time of the year. Booking a hair appointment 15 minutes after you finish work is pretty stupid really, couldn't cancel as it takes many weeks to get an appointment at my hairdressers. I've booked the next three appointments up for day time slots – lesson learnt!

Will Gordon the cat have gobbled it up, by the time I get there in the morning? Hopefully he will just be enjoying watching this colourful little visitor to his garden! 😻😼 If anyone reading this is offended, I love cats as much as birds and I photographed Gordon himself only a week or two ago, but cats and birds don't go very well together as we all know! I have to live with a local ginger and white fluffy cat constantly sitting below my front garden wall or under the fuschia bush, waiting and watching all my birds at the feeders – I have no idea how many its eaten, but I haven't caught it in the act yet thank goodness.

Attempted to see the Night Heron again this evening and failed. I was on route to try and find it myself, when a message came up to say it was north of Toogs. By the time I had found the exact location where people were watching it from, I was seconds too late – it had flown. Jim N. arrived at the same time as me and he dipped out too. Descended a humongous hill down to the voe, where people had seen it fly to and failed with that too – climbing back up the hill wasn't joyous at all, but I got back up to the top quicker than I expected to, which was good. I then drove back to Bridge end and the pier and scanned everywhere with scope and found 4 Grey Herons fishing, but no sign of the Night Heron. Can't go tomorrow as in hairdressers after work, so will look again on Friday night. Although there have been a few in Norfolk and generally in the Broads area, I have never actually seen a Night Heron anywhere!

Purple Heron at Boddam Voe! Everyone's favourite place to go birding! I have seen Purple Heron's in Norfolk before, but never seen one this close! Absolutely wow views! Found by Nat Hall, thank you! First live one since 1981 local birders tell me! A Snipe was also seen here.

Went to Quendale Mill to see if I could find the Black Redstart seen earlier, but no luck with that. Returning back from the dam, I had a single Redwing in the main area of trees behind the stone wall and several Blackbirds around. 6 Ravens flew overhead. Searched all the roof tops of the farm buildings for the Black Redstart, but only found Starlings. Bumped into Cerys and Michelle H. going for a stroll – lovely to have a catch up. Then Hugh rang me to say he had the Green-winged Teal again at Hillwell Loch, which I then saw through my scope!

Redwing at Quendale Mill

Someone called Jake put news out that the Night Heron was being mobbed above the outdoor centre at Bridge End, Burra. Would I get there in time? I tried my best. Jake had been watching it south of the outdoor centre, but it was now out of view when I arrived. I remained by myself and scoped in hope. I was serenaded by a Blackbird singing its heart out and a Otter a few yards from me. Kevin Kelly arrived on scene and said he had seen it from the top road. I flew up to the top road and a birder called Natasha also arrived at the same time and Kevin returned to see if he could pick it up again for us. In the very fading light, we could not see it. Thank you to Jake for putting the news out and for Kevin for kindly coming back to help me see it. Oh well, maybe another day.

Rang TalkTalk again first thing this morning, waste of time – my issue has been 'escalated' and someone will ring me in two days time - yeah, right!

No sign of my Hedge Sparrow today, but lots of House Sparrows, Starlings, Collared Doves, Rock Doves and Blackbirds, after I filled all the bird feeders up. Went to Planticrub Garden centre for the first time this year. Purchased a new ground level bird bath. 36 Oystercatchers at Tingwall Loch. Such a beautiful day here with blue skies and fluffy white clouds.

Tingwall Loch

Spent a long time around Bridge End, Burra and Papil looking for the Night Heron this evening, failed with that. Found a Grey Heron at the outdoor centre, along with two very defensive, yapping dogs. On Papil Loch there was a single Mute Swan, Tufted Ducks, Teal and a Redshank. Three Turnstones were on the beach opposite. Not seen any cute lambs yet skipping amongst the daffodils, they must be due soon!

Aurora at Tingwall Loch

Spent the evening by Tingwall Loch, waiting and hoping for the Aurora to show and also wanted to test out my (now old) iPhone 11 Pro Max. I was quite pleased with my pictures, but nothing more than an 'Amber Alert' on the Aurora App, so nothing spectacular achieved.

Lots of boring jobs had to be completed today – although one of them can't be it seems. TalkTalk do not operate in this part of Shetland, so I have been with Plusnet for the internet which has been brilliant. I wanted to keep my TalkTalk emails, but its impossible to join or register for TalkTalk Mail Plus, where you choose to pay £5 monthly or £50 for the year to keep using their email service. When you click the £50 choice its asks for your email and then says its you are not registered and you can't apply as a new customer. Another hour plus on the phone today with no success and then a live chat for over another hour later. I tried to sort this weeks ago, gave up and have been putting off ringing again as I knew what would happen. How difficult can it be?! You would think they would want my £50. Its all very worrying, as if you don't subscribe to this, your entire email account is deleted after two years and and I can't have that happening. The two years is almost up. I will try and ring AGAIN tomorrow!

Another gorgeous day here – my favourite weather, sunny and chilly! Several bees around the garden this evening after work. Its a massively uplifting change in the weather here and set for the rest of the week! Pity I have to start my day off on Friday with an MOT and then a hospital appointment – birding straight after that though. The first Puffins returned to Sumburgh Cliffs on Monday, looking forward to seeing them again.

It can be very, very difficult to cope with your own wellbeing and deciding when to step back for your own sanity, when your dear sister Lucy (who has been mentally ill for virtually all of her adult life), is going through a very difficult time right now. I spent a long time emailing a few people in relation to Lucy's issues last night. Knowing that your are doing your absolute best for her in every way possible, but she simply doesn't want to know, is difficult to deal with and accept.

Right now, Vivien and I are both exhausted with trying to do the right thing. Sometimes, you simply have to close the door to give yourself and Lucy space. We should be used to it by now, but its neither easy or straight forward – always a delicate balance and can be both challenging and emotional. Currently Lucy is not talking to me or texting me, which is very unusual. I'm sure we'll be chatting again in a few days, hopefully anyway! 💞

No April Fools from me this year, couldn't think of anything brilliant enough to fool you all! Another very busy day at work. The sea glittered in the sunshine from the hospital windows and it looked like it was the best day here since last Summer and it was a balmy 13 degrees! I felt too tired to go out anywhere after work though. Filled the bird feeders up this evening and put some washing out. Lots of plants springing up and a couple of Bees seen! First Swallow of 2025 seen here by someone I noticed on Facebook.

The sky tonight (late) as I was hanging washing out was magical – so many stars and fluffy, streaky white clouds against black sky at the top of Gallow Hill above my house. The Northern Lights were showing on the webcams, but you can't see them directly from my house, as I face south and Gallow Hill is north, so I would have to climb to the top of the hill and this would not be sensible to do at night. So looking forward to the weekend to get out in the nice weather.

Last night was terrible to say the least. I'm not going into details of where I purchased my tea, but I have food poisoning from mid evening last night, violently sick – so badly I won't be eating a single thing until tomorrow and will just opt for a slice of dry toast at most when I do attempt to eat. The sickness stopped this morning, but I feel really rough – giddy and faint. Spoke to a GP on the phone this afternoon and they agreed it couldn't be anything else. Been drinking tons of water.

None.

Back to work today. Heavy rain all day long, which is more than probably why there is no bird news here today! On my return home from work I counted 30 Collared Doves perched in the trees opposite my garden, which is a record. My last biggest count was 27 on 18th February 2024.

I had a single Siskin on my feeders this morning (first one this year), also a Robin and the usual Starlings, Blackbirds, House Sparrows, Collared Doves and Rock Doves. Did an essential Tesco run, had lunch and then went birding.

Headed south and found a Chiffchaff flitting around the Grutness Garden, along with 3 Robins, Starlings and House Sparrows. I went for a second look at the Bufflehead at Loch of Hillwell, which was far better views than I had at Spiggie Loch, but still very distant – it seemed very settled on the loch and spent alot of time preening whilst I watched it. Other birds seen: Blackbirds, Curlews, Greylag Geese, Redshanks, several Oystercatchers, Teal, Mallard, Tufted Ducks.

Norfolk Trip – 12th to 21st March 2025

My Norfolk trip took quite a while to plan, as I had to travel the cheapest way possible and was not able to stay as long as my visit last March, due to the cost of accommodation more than anything else. I couldn't really afford to return at all, but I was way overdue to visit my sisters and had not seen Lucy's new abode, which she moved into last October.

I got the Northlink ferry and cabin free both ways with my 4 vouchers now that I'm 60, which was brilliant! You are given 4 vouchers yearly. I also got a Megabus bus free (with my bus pass😂) from Aberdeen to Edinburgh, but it didn't work out for the return journey. I then got a train from Edinburgh to Peterborough to Ely and then to King's Lynn. On the return journey, I took a bus from King's Lynn to Peterborough (not free, as Scottish bus pass does not cover England obviously and you have to wait until you are 65 to get a bus pass in England), then a train to Edinburgh and another to Aberdeen in time for the Northlink ferry 'home'.

Wednesday 12th March
I was originally working until lunchtime, but with time in lieu owed I had was lucky enough to have the entire day off, which really helped with last minute packing. I caught the 3.38pm bus from Scalloway to the ferry terminal with one suitcase and a rucksack. The Northlink ferry departed Lerwick at 5.30pm. The usual fabulous meal in the restaurant. I saw Josh (physio at work) and his wife Hannah on the ferry! Retired to my 4-berth cabin. Fairly smooth crossing. I love staying in the cabins and would never book one of those awful pods or recliner seats again – I would rather sleep on the floor.

Thursday 13th March
Had a fairly good night's sleep, had a shower and then had a wonderful breakfast and the ferry arrived in Aberdeen at 7am.

Walked to the bus station, caught a Megabus at 8.05am. Three hours and 10 minutes to get to Edinburgh bus station. I was very impressed with this bus – smooth ride, didn’t feel ill at all.

Stressful trying to find the train station in Edinburgh, with different directions from several people! The train station was also very stressful. Just managed to catch the Edinburgh to Peterborough train with 5 minutes to spare at 12pm. Arrived in Peterborough at 15.57. Train to Ely, then train to King’s Lynn arriving around 17.30, but apparently I should have got a bus from Peterborough (long story)!!!!

It felt very depressing walking through King’s Lynn – I never did enjoy living here. Got to The Globe Hotel, checked in and made my way up to room 211 – smaller room than on my last visit, but far better as it was situated in a quiet part of the hotel and very clean and modern. Unpacked. Went down to Wetherspoons for evening meal. Returned to my room, had a cup of tea, watched the news, power shower and early night.

Friday 14th March
Bought a bouquet of roses for Lucy, hot cross buns, Jaffa cakes, tiramisu, pizza and silver foil from Sainsbury's. Caught the 9.30am bus to see Lucy.

Lovely sunny day, so brilliant to see Lucy, lots of hugs and she looked really well I thought. Gave Lucy a glass bird ornament which I bought from the Shetland Times Bookshop (got one for Vivien too) and roses, which I arranged in a vase for her. Also bought her some Shetland Belgian chocolate/ginger Flapjacks and a Shetland Visitor Guide. Chatted, had lunch. Watched the news together. Persuaded Lucy to throw her very old teal rug, which has seen better days. So nice to meet Lucy's manager Danielle and other staff.

Went for walk to the churchyard which was really beautiful. So lovely to see some Long-tailed Tits, Great Tits, Blue Tits and Goldfinches. We returned to Lucy's flat. Lucy was delivered fish n chips (every Friday) by staff as I was leaving to catch the 5.16pm bus back to King's Lynn.

I had 20 minutes in TK Max before it closed at 6pm and bought a new purse. I returned to the hotel and had veggie sausages, potato, peas and gravy. I had my laptop with me and ordered Lucy a rack of coat hooks, a file organiser and a silver Addis step stool off Amazon.

Saturday 15th March
Caught the 9.30am bus to Titchwell RSPB. On route, lots of new builds since I visited a year ago. Heard my first Spring Chiffchaff as I got off the bus. Glorious day and so lovely to visit Titchwell reserve again. Met up with Eddie and Pete – so lovely to see them both. Said hello to Trevor Girling in the shop. Walked along the Fen Trail and saw a roosting Tawny Owl in an ivy covered tree! Heard a Cetti’s Warbler, saw Med Gulls, 6 male Red-crested Pochards and females, Tufted Ducks, Mallards, 2 Little Grebes, Coot, 2 Red Kites almost over our heads, 2 Marsh Harriers and 2 Common Buzzards in the thermals, as we sat on the bench overlooking Patsy’s Pool. So lovely sitting here. Pete sharply spotted a Kingfisher sitting on a bramble in the middle of the reedbed distantly, made my day and was the star of the show!!!

Ambled back to the cafe for lunch, where we were also joined by family friend Malcolm White, who looked really well I thought. Had lunch sitting outside on the picnic bench. Very sadly Pete only had a couple of hours with us as he had an appointment to look at a new car at 2pm, but still fabulous to see him. I walked with Pete and Malcolm to the car park and said goodbye to them both and then returned and saw a Robin perched up very close. I rejoined Eddie and we walked along the main path and out to the beach. Lovely to see Long-tailed Tits (I particularly miss seeing these), Chaffinch, Avocets, more Med Gulls, large flock of Golden Plover, Gadwall, Mallards, Teal, lots of Brent Geese.

Walked back to the visitor centre and said goodbye to Trevor. Walked to the carpark and Eddie very kindly offered to drop me half way along the Firs Road at Holme, where we said goodbye. I then walked the rest of the way to HBO. Took some lovely pictures of the beach and noticed that more pines had disappeared with dune erosion. No sign any life at HBO, so had the place to myself and paid my respects to my parents. Beautiful here in the sunshine. The gorse was out in flower and the Broadwater had lots of duck and Mute Swans in the afternoon light. It was almost too hot to sit in father’s favourite position/seat in front of the observatory and reminded me of days gone by, when father sat here in his shorts, shirt and hat. I placed three pine cones next to where our parent’s ashes are laid to rest – to represent Vivien, Lucy and I. The boardwalk is new (again) by Pat’s Pool and hide (only older folk will know where I mean) and the only Heligoland Trap left (there used to be three) has been replaced at the end of the bank and looks very smart.

Popped into the NWT Firs House, said hello to Fiona who works there, but no sign of Garry, I asked Fiona to say hello to Garry and Alison for me. I then had to speed walk back along the Firs Road to catch the bus in time! Saw a lovely male Stonechat on route, but I was walking into the sun all the way back, so not good viewing conditions. 2 Greenfinches perched high up and calling in trees along Beach Road, just past the Firs Road entrance with Goldfinches and a few Hedge Sparrows around. 2 Mistle Thrushes in horse paddocks along Beach Road, just before the A149 main road. Just got to the bus stop with 10 minutes to spare for the Coastliner bus.

Bus arrived and had a dispute with the bus driver, who said my Explorer £24 ticket I had purchased for the week wasn’t valid and said it doesn’t cover the coast, it only covers as far as Hunstanton. I pointed out that the bus driver who had sold it to me on Thursday morning, assured me that it covered all of Norfolk for a week on the Lynx buses only, which this was! Apparently I should have asked for the Coast weekly ticket, which is £30 – how was I supposed to know that! He let me off in the end, not my fault!

As I walked to sit down on the very full bus, a surprised voice called out “Penny Clarke” – it was Ashley Saunders and his wife ‘on a pub crawl’ and off to see a show in Hunstanton – I never expected to see them on the bus - we had a lovely mini catch up before they got off the bus in Hunstanton. Arrived back in King’s Lynn at 6.35pm. Walked back to the hotel and felt shattered.

Back in my room I had a quick shower, freshen up and change of clothes and then met with Hilary Palmer, my lovely old colleague and friend from QEH, where we had a lovely meal at The Poco Lounge in King’s Lynn. We spent two and a half hours chatting and laughing and the food was extremely good. I swear Hilary looks younger every time I see her, you would never in a million years, have any idea that she is 68, she doesn’t look more than 50 to me! Returned to my hotel exhausted.

Sunday 16th March
Caught the 10.30am bus to Lucy’s. A lovely member of staff called Tyla cooked a Sunday roast, which was spectacular! Vivien arrived at 3pm – lots of hugs and so good to see her again, its been too long. Gave Vivien her little glass bird present, a Shetland guide and a Shetland Belgian chocolate/ginger Flapjack. Rack of six coat hooks arrived from Amazon for Lucy. Vivien and I caught the 5.16pm bus back to Lynn. Had evening meal in The Globe. Vivien was staying in room 207 and I was in 211. There are no pictures of Vivien sadly, as she never lets me take a photo.

Monday 17th March
Got my Rotary watch battery changed at H. Samuels and a new leather strap from Francis Wain. Met Vivien in M&S, got our lunches, looked at clothes etc. Met with Vivien at the bus station and we caught the 10.30am bus to see Lucy. We all had M&S Sandwiches for lunch and Lemon drizzle cake. A tradesman called Henry, who installed Lucy's new boiler recently, was summoned out by Danielle (my request) to show us and Lucy how to change the heating and hot water temperature, which was pretty simple and Lucy’s now knows how to do this herself. Tried to get her washer/drier to work with Lucy, it didn’t work (the drier). So lovely to chat with a member of staff called J., who's mother I had the joy of working with after her stroke out in the community, when I worked at the QEH.

Went for lovely walk to the churchyard again and this time followed a path at the back of the church which to led a field (with teasels in) and an ivy covered hedge for a short distance, which led to ‘Back Street’ - dead opposite this was a hall/estate, full of tall trees and tons of lovely daffodils. Got chatting to a gamekeeper and estate man, who told us they Goshawks, Bullfinches, Siskins, Firecrests, Treecreepers and Great Spotted Woodpeckers here! As we turned left it was a beautiful scene of a large field of sheep with a back drop of the church with blue sky and fluffy white clouds. We continued our walk to the end of the road, where we crossed to the road back to Lucy's flat - a lovely circular walk for Lucy to do by herself.

Back at Lucy’s flat - we had a cup of tea etc. Lucy's last Amazon parcel turned up, which was a blue document folder. We left to catch the 5.16pm bus and returned to King’s Lynn and had time for a quick look in TKMAX and then returned to the hotel. Vivien and I met at 6.30pm for dinner, had a pasta dish with garlic bread and then ice-cream, shortbread and strawberries for dessert. Ray turned up part way through our meal and he joined us for tea. Very entertaining evening, listening to Ray and Vivien!

Tuesday 18th March
Bought a new top from the Edinburgh Wool Shop. Bought raspberry trifles and veggie sausage rolls from Sainsbury’s. Vivien, Ray and I went on the 10.30am bus to go and see Lucy. Ray had very kindly made Lucy some of his scrumptious Tea Cake, which we all enjoyed with butter. After lunch we had a lovely walk around the sheep fields by the church, were there were lots of cute baby lambs. A warm and sunny day and lots of birds singing including Chiffchaffs. Returned to the flat. Left at 5.16pm and had dinner at the The Globe.

Wednesday 19th March
Saw a Comma butterfly on an ivy covered telegraph pole, on route to see Lucy on the bus. Unfortunately when we arrived at Lucy's with a washing up bowl and cleaning stuff (which was discussed yesterday) – poor Lucy had a breakdown and was shouting enough to bring Maureen (from the office) swiftly over to sort out and calm the situation. We had to leave for a short while and it was all very upsetting. Maureen came to talk with us in the garden. Not really fair to go into details, so I won't. Lucy didn't want to join us in the pub for lunch either.

Vivien, Ray and I went to the local pub by ourselves and had a fantastic first course, but the desserts were rubbish. Ray went back to King's Lynn on the bus. Vivien and I returned to Lucy’s flat with her permission and spent the last three hours with her before we caught the last bus back at 5.16pm. It was difficult to say goodbye to Lucy. Vivien and I have worked out how to make things easier for Lucy on my next visit – she is used to being in the flat by herself and she had me all day with her on Friday, on Sunday (plus Vivien for a couple of hours), then Monday with Vivien and I and then Tuesday with all three of us – it was too much for her to cope with us all again on the Wednesday, I can see that now. As Vivien said, Lucy can only cope with other people for 2-3 hours maximum, so we have worked out how to make this better for Lucy next time.

Vivien, Ray and I had a meal in the hotel and chatted to 10.30pm. Packed up my luggage ready for my early departure tomorrow.

Thursday 20th March
Had to get up at 4.30am. Had a shower, porridge and coffee. Left hotel at 5.30am and it was just getting light. Knocked on Vivien’s door and we had a last hug. Walked to bus station, where there were drunk elderly men sitting on seats with cans of beer. Caught 6am bus to Peterborough and then a train to Edinburgh. Beautiful sunny day and fabulous scenery on the train to Edinburgh. Then a train to Aberdeen arriving at 13.35.

Went to TK Max, M&S and Mountain Warehouse. Walked to NorthLink ferry terminal. Checked in and settled myself in my cabin. Ferry left at 5pm. Had a fish supper, black forest gateaux and Orkney ice-cream. Lots of people on the ferry and trying to find tables to eat in the very busy restaurant area. The smoothest crossing I can recall and had a very long night's sleep!

Friday 21st March
Had breakfast and the ferry arrived in Lerwick at 7.20am. Caught the 7.59 bus back to Scalloway.

Scalloway Harbour, where the bus dropped me off back home!
