Someone from Sweden kindly emailed me and someone else yesterday to say the following:
"Saw your pictures on the Surfbirds Britain & Ireland Stop Press Rarities page. The owl on your pictures looks rather pale and, most important, shows a black "frame" around it's face. Have you concidered the possibility of it being an escaped Pharaoh Eagle Owl? I've never seen a European Eagle Owl looking like this... Compare for example with pictures on http://www.netfugl.dk/pictures.php?id=listpictures&species_id=459." – interesting!!!

I think its really sad - this beautiful owl, all by itself. Really it should be transported back to the wild so it can be with others. I also heard to my horror from someone on the evening that I saw it, that somebody was thinking of shooting it as they were fed up with it eating all the ducklings!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are some awesome pictures of this owl having lunch here and also here!!!

Hi .. In relation to your earlier post on the owl it's a Indian Eagle Owl .. Bubo bengalensis. These are one of the most common owls now kept in captivity in the uk. Fine specimen
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a (bengalensis) Indian Eagle Owl. Pale facial disc bordered by clear thick black border, and rather pale overall. As the above commenter notes they are widely held in captivity.
ReplyDeletePharaoh Eagle Owls are the middle eastern birds
Thanks very much Tim!
