No news today!

Another extremely busy day with lots of painting done. My electrician Lewis was here from 9.30am to 12pm when he finished all the work and all radiators that I have installed, including a 3-element in my hall with added fuse box for this and the shower!!! He will return to put the final two radiators in when they arrive at GTS, excellent work all round and a very nice person. I asked Lewis if he would be interested in doing a joint flat-packing job, which requires two people when my large bookcases arrive from Wayfair but with a smile he declined and said "I don't do flat-packing, but my wife does".

No sign of the Leucistic House Sparrow today, but the usual huge flock of House Sparrows, Rock Doves, Collared Doves and Starlings again. Foggy, rainy and dull all day with south west winds.

Extremely busy DIY day. My electrician was here all day until 3.15pm. I was unscrewing and removing 32 heavy firebricks from the old Dimplex storage heaters – I could only lift one at a time, so that was 32 trips to stack them up outside. Emptied the car, packed up with Rointe radiator boxes and remains of three storage heaters. Whilst Lewis went into Lerwick to buy more stuff for the work, I headed to the dump and then to GTS to buy an extra 3 element radiator. The two I am waiting for are still not in yet. The 3 element radiator is going in my hall which is only 5.6ft x 3.5ft. Two electricians who have been out here before said it wasn't possible to put a radiator in here, with no socket and only the shower switch (bathroom next to hall), Lewis also agreed, but he said with a new and seperate fuse box (don't fully understand it as not an electrician) then it would be possible, the downside to this is that its cost me more pennies, but worth I feel, as currently have to hang wet coats in the kitchen as no heating in the hall.

So nice to have 2 extra double sockets in the kitchen, there was only one, can you believe that was only one double socket in a kitchen?! I now have three! Lewis really is an excellent electrician and obviously knows what he's doing. He's coming back again tomorrow to finish installing the new fuse box and installing the 3-element heater and then he will just have to install the last 2 heaters that have not arrived yet, fingers crossed they arrive tomorrow. Spent hours cleaning up after saw dust from cutting holes in plasterboard and trying to put things back were they were.

The Leucistic House Sparrow seen briefly on the feeders, along with a huge flock of House Sparrows, Rock Doves, Collared Doves and Starlings again. Margaret has had the Leucistic House Sparrow in her garden, so its obviously doing the rounds. Another lovely sunny day here. So looking forward to getting out birding, but I'm going to have to wait until I have all the essentials done for the carpet and blind fittings on Thursday.

Painting and decorating again. My builder came round to assess my front door for me, which leaks in extreme weather and he's coming to sort this out tomorrow evening for me.

My house is a scene of chaos at the moment, but what a productive day! My new electrician (recommended by Jill and Rob) worked non stop from 9am to 3pm and is returning again on Monday. Three storage heaters removed and cast aside to cool down and then I can remove the fire bricks to stack up on my border wall in the garden and take the metal heaters to the dump. Three new radiators installed and look very smart indeed. New sockets put in and a unsightly double socket, which was situated half way up the wall in the living room has been removed and moved down next to the skirting board – I will have to fill and patch wallpaper this hole though. The plan is to hang my biggest bird painting on that wall and hopefully cover most of the patched hole up!

My electrician said he might even be able to put a radiator up in the small hallway, when previous electricians said it wasn't possible! This will be awesome if he can, as having wet coats hanging in a hall with no heating is not ideal – it does mean I will have to buy another radiator though, but will only needed the smallest size, which is a 3-element.

The Leucistic House Sparrow is still feeding here, along with a huge flock of House Sparrows, Rock Doves, Collared Doves and Starlings again. A rainy and sunny day here. I hardly did a thing after the electrician left, as I was exhausted from having to move loads of boxes around late last night – boxes that had to moved to fit in the new radiator (where there wasn't anything before) in the dining room. It will be so good to get everything unpacked, which will happen by the end of the year.

Barred Warbler at North Staney Hill, Barred Warbler at Loch of Clickimin, Lerwick.
Curlew Sandpiper at Scatness.
Pied Flycatcher at Levenwick.
Red-breasted Flycatcher at Orca Country Inn, Hoswick.

Pied Flycatcher at Uyeasound, Snow Bunting at Northdale, Pied Flycatcher, Barred Warbler at Norwick, Unst.

A lovely sunny but chilly day here. The Leucistic House Sparrow showed up again, along with a huge flock of House Sparrows, Rock Doves, Collared Doves and Starlings and also had a Pied Wagtail in my driveway. I still have a lot more painting to do before Thursday, so I think the first half of my annual leave will not include as much birding as I had planned, but will certainly be out birding to the max on the second week.

Had another electrician round for a quote, much cheaper than previous quotes and personally recommended for work he has done recently and even better he's starting at 9am tomorrow (Saturday) and should have all the work done before my carpet and blinds get fitted next Thursday. The three storage heaters I have, will have to be turned off on Saturday to allow them to cool down completely before removing on Monday/Tuesday, so its going to be a very cold house until the new radiators go in!

I collected four of my Rointe Belize Radiators from GTS today, still waiting for two more to arrive – serious money, but apparently much more efficient than my old type Dimplex storage heaters, so should save me money long term and will certainly look far more pleasing to the eye.

Mixed day of weather – the sea looked much calmer from the hospital windows and the sun was out more than it was raining, but colder than it was a few days ago. Aurora Borealis showing well in Shetland tonight on the Webcams, but skies not clear everywhere here.
Flat packing this evening, I was putting off doing this for ages and finally got round to putting two of these sets of draws (going under my office desk) together this evening, not a quick process at all, but I worked it out in the end. I had to get this done as I have very large flat packed bookcase systems x 2 coming from Wayfair and possibly being delivered tomorrow, I think they will take two people physically to put together, but I'll try and do it myself if I can. When these have been put up against the back wall, I can start putting everything in my office studio. It will brilliant to have my first nice room to put everything in place properly and looking forward to arranging everything.

Lots of House Sparrows feeding again this evening, but no sign of the smart Leucistic House Sparrow either this morning before work or this evening. I hope it hasn't been gobbled up by the two local cats here. Now on holiday for two weeks! 😊

Another rainy day here and looking at the sea, I wouldn't want to be on any ferries right now! Busy at work and meeting (as always) some lovely Shetland folk.

Returning home from work I had a fabulous surprise! The first thing I do when I arrive home is to look out of the living room window at my bird feeders. Feeding on the grass was a small white bird amongst a huge flock of 60+ House Sparrows and Starlings. Heart racing and for a nano second I thought I had my first garden mega – not quite, but it was a Leucistic House Sparrow, with light pink beak and feet and the majority of the body was white with only a few black/brown markings, WOW! What a stunning bird!

Photographing through my double glazing is absolutely rubbish to say the least, so I attempted to photograph from the stable door, which is also tricky as it doesn't matter how slowly you open the top section of the door, the birds are so close, they are very aware that you are there. I get did lucky a couple of times, but pictures obscured by a Starling and foliage. The last option is to stand at the furthest end of the garden, which I did and in the rain, but it didn't return after that. I will try and get a better picture tomorrow if its still there. Lovely garden tick! In fact I don't think I have ever seen one like it! I made sure I re-topped up all the feeders. I wonder what else will turn up in my little garden?!

Atrocious weather here, with lashing rain all day, gale force north west winds and a yellow weather warning until 8pm. A sweet scene of at least 15 House Sparrows sheltering under the slate roof of my hanging bird table this evening, when I returned home from work. New hanging baskets still in place! Lots of leaves blown from the trees, a real Autumn feel to the weather.

I actually lit my fire tonight it was so chilly – so cosy, love lighting the fire! The burn on Gallow Hill behind me is raging down the hill and under my house. Two landslips at Kergord today, another at Weisdale and flooding across road at Cunningsburgh and other places.

Out Skerries – My First Visit!

Jill and Rob very kindly invited me to join them on their visit to Out Skerries today – somewhere they visit fairly regularly, but this was my first trip out here. I met up with them at the Vidlin Ferry Terminal, left my car there and went in Jill and Rob's car on the ferry, which left at 10am and took just over an hour to reach Out Skerries. Very luckily for me, it was a very calm sea today, I wouldn't have been able to go if it had been rough! On route out in the fog was a huge raft of Eider, Shags and Black Guillemots on the sea. Not very nice weather though, very foggy for a good third of the day and raining on and off. Local birders Anne, Chris, Paul H. and Matt W. were also on the ferry.

I love an adventure and it was a fascinating place to visit. Although it was very sad to see a large school with playground and equipment all closed up, being as there are only two children on the Skerries now and both are home schooled I was told. Less than 40 people live here now and there are several derilict and empty houses here. There are two shops, one guest house and a small visitor centre with public toilets by Bruray Pier.

We drove to the furthest end of the island to start birding. It was exciting to be somewhere that felt so remote and unique. I loved looking at everyone's gardens – I always find it very interesting to see what people are growing. Of note there were several different types of fir trees, Rosa Rugosa, honeysuckle, lilies, Buddleia (Black Knight), Willows and irises amongst others.

The little yellow house on the horizon was where Bill Oddie used to stay many years ago!

The Plantation

Main birds seen today were a Garden Warbler on a wall, a Spotted Flycatcher and Redstart fem. sitting on the same washing line. At least 2 Whinchats sitting on dry stone walls (Jill had 4 and also a male Redstart), 2 Swallows graced us with their prescence throughout the day, Lesser Whitethroats x 2 seen in the same garden, including an idyllic scene of a very large fat red hen, a huge rabbit and a LW feeding on a lawn with a Blackbird. We saw a few Chiffchaffs, but mostly Willows Warblers. There was a Red-backed Shrike around, but we simply couldn't find it at this point. The other birders also saw a Pied Flycatcher we noted on the WhatApp group later on and also several Blackcaps, which we didn't see any of.

Other birds seen were: Blackbird, Raven, Pied Wagtail, Rock and Meadow Pipits, House Sparrows, Starlings, Turnstone, Curlew, Herring Gull, Common Gull, Black-backed Gull, Fulmar, Arctic Tern and Snipe. We also saw two very large and flamboyant Cockerels and lots of Hens! There are several sheep here and one was friendly enough to let me stroke it.

At around 4pm we went to the self service visitor centre, which is set in a small wooden building, it was extremely cosy inside with radiators, two large tables and chairs to sit at with self service hot drinks and sink to wash up etc and crafts for sale with a honesty pot. Jill and I walked to check out the gardens and The Plantation (newly planted and will look amazing in a few years time) – we bumped into Chris and Anne who told us they had just seen the Red-backed Shrike about half an hour ago by the pumping station, so we walked off down the hill in that direction. We stood and scanned the area and distantly I spotted a possible bird on a large boulder – as it turned, I realised it was the Red-backed Shrike! "Well spotted" Jill said. Lucky find at the end of the day for us! Jill walked a bit closer to get a better picture and this involved walking on dodgy and very unlevel ground when we about to catch the ferry and I was at work in the morning, so I decided to stay put and got very distant record shots only. After Jill's much closer BOC shots, I realised I should have joined her! Pleased with our last good bird of the day, we speed walked back to the pier. Other birders had started to join us on the pier ready for the ferry depature at 5.30pm.

The journey back wasn't quite as smooth, but I still survived without feeling sick, so all good. Luckily for Jill and Rob, they don't get sea sick at all. It was much colder now, so I stayed in the car for most of the journey back to Vidlin. Arrived at about 6.30pm. After a coffee in my car I drove home to Scalloway. A lovely day out with Jill and Rob, who are lovely company and always make me laugh. Made a fabulous change from decorating!

More pictures to be added.......

18 degrees here today, felt much hotter than that though and not even a hint of wind. Lerwick was packed full of cruise ship tourists and many people were wearing shorts and t-shirts. Spent some pennies today on a taller step ladder from Frank Williamson, a cordless Stihl Strimmer from Shetland Power Tools, paving slabs from Huws Gray and after a Tesco shop, the boot was full. Phoned Ray up this morning (Vivien's partner) to sing Happy Birthday to him! Saw two Red Admirals in Scalloway and lots of House Sparrows on my bird feeders. Big birding day out tomorrow.

Happy Birthday Ray! ⚓ 🎉 🥳

East Hills at Wells, Norfolk on Fire Today!

When John F. sent me a link to the news this evening, saying that East Hills was on fire today and someone had been arrested for arson, I could hardly believe what I was reading. I can't possibly say on here what I actually want to say, otherwise my blog may be removed. What a truly wicked thing to do. I don't know the full loss of the habitat, but any loss is awful for such a unique and special place.

For anyone who doesn't know, East Hills is a belt of pine trees, sycamores, bramble, scrub surrounded by Marram grass, beach and saltmarsh just north of Wells-next-Sea in Norfok – its a little piece of paradise, a joy to visit, either by boat at high tide or walking out at low tide (potentially treacherous though as quick sand on route and you have to be super careful with the tide times). It was a particularly exciting place for birders searching for rare birds both in Spring, but even more so in the Autumn migration in September and October. There have been many, many rare birds out there.

I have walked out there several times over the years, but after a scary quick sand incident when I was walking out alone, I only took the boat out after that! It is a place of solitude, a place where you never bumped into a dog on lead or off lead and more than often, not another human being either. There is a fabulous selection of trees out here, mainly pine trees, but a good number of sycamores, which are a magnet for migrants feeding on insects amongst the sticky leaves. A truly beautiful place to be. Can't believe this happened. I would love to know why this was set on fire and for what reason, it seems very odd as it reads that it was a 60 year old man. Maybe a barbecue? If so this is breaking the law as it strictly states no fires or barbecues on notice boards, on the inland side of the marsh, before you walk out there.

Several of the local birders who walk out there regularly, some of them daily in October will be devastated to say the least. Any loss of habitat means loss of wildlife, thank goodness its late in the season and not Spring when birds would have been nesting. Even though I have left Norfolk, this is extremely shocking and sad to hear about.
