Gramborough Hill, and Cley NWT!

Monday 29th July
I had to deliver stuff to our family solicitors in Wells after work this evening, so took the opportunity to get some birding in whilst along the coast. I stopped to pick up some fish 'n' chips for my tea, but sadly this was not possible, as the queues along the quayside were insane! So had to make do with some emergency supplies from the local supermarket!

Gramborough Hill, Salthouse!
Tons of Gatekeeper Butterflies everywhere, have never seen so many, also big numbers of Painted Ladies, Peacock and Red Admiral on the buddleia bushes at the hill. I also saw an Emperor Dragonfly here. Little Ringed Plover, 4 juvs. and a Black-headed Gull were on the remains of the pool, just west of the hill. Meadow Pipits, Sand Martins and House Martins also seen, but no other birds of note. Sat on top of the hill to enjoy the view for a while, whilst listening to Sandwich Terns flying past on the shingle beach.

Daukes' Hide, Cley NWT
Wood Sandpipers x 23, Arctic Terns x 5, Greenshanks x 2, Water Rail juv. x 1, Little Stint, Black-tailed Godwits, Avocets, tons of Black-headed Gulls, Teal, Mallards, Redshanks, Little Egret, Reed Warbler, Pied Wagtails, Dunlins, Shelducks, Sparrowhawk, Ruff, Starlings, Little Ringed Plovers x 6. A Migrant Hawker was emerging from underneath the hide flap in Teal Hide! As we walked back a Water Vole was feeding in the river under the bridge next to A149!

Another Sticky Hot Day!

I didn't sleep on my camp bed at all last night and eventually returned to my normal bed at about 5am where it was very slightly cooler than last night and got about an hour's sleep before having to go to work. I was like a drunken zombie all day.

Although temperatures had dropped to 23.5c outside, as I drove into work this morning, the hospital remained at boiling point all day. Yesterday's heat had not escaped the building and we suffered again with stifling conditions. Some of my colleagues who live in the Norwich area reported big thunderstorms last night, but there was no rain here overnight. I really hope tomorrow's forecast is correct and the rain is torrential to cool things down! My body and mind can't take much more!

This won't be a joyous weekend at all. Vivien is coming to my house tomorrow and we have to spend hours filling in laborious legal forms in relation to the family home and on Sunday I am scheduled to work all day!!! Roll on the following weekend!

UK HEATWAVE & HOTTEST DAY EVER IN NORFOLK!

"UK heatwave: Second hottest day on record leads to travel chaos"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49106092

"Today's heatwave saw the hottest day ever recorded in Norfolk, with the mercury soaring to 35.8C, forecasters confirmed and police closing the A11 due to melting tarmac."

https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/weather/norfolk-hottest-day-ever-county-sees-new-heatwave-record-set-at-marham-1-6181723

IT WAS UNBEARABLE IN THE HOSPITAL TODAY. All lights turned off to the minimum, blinds and windows closed. I felt so sorry for the patients, it was dreadful. It was like a boiling inferno, inside and out. When we walked out of work it was even hotter, sickeningly hot, the intensity was shocking. Getting in the car was torture and the air conditioning did not even kick in fully by the time I got home. The outside temperature at 4.40pm according to my car was 40.5c (104.9°F) and one of my colleagues who works part time, recorded 42c (107.6°F) at her home in Pott Row at 12.30pm!!!

Dripping hot and exhausted, I stumbled into my house after work. I felt sick. I changed the hot bird bath water so the birds could have a cool splash around and then collapsed on the sofa with the fan switched on. Watered the plants outside and put out hedgehog food at around 9pm. I didn't even have the energy to cook any tea until 9.30pm. When I ventured upstairs a short while ago, I was horrified by the intensity of the heat, so I won't be going to my bed tonight. Its going to be a long night, camping on the kitchen floor, there is no way I will be sleeping upstairs, its like an oven!!! Looking forward to the lower temperatures tomorrow! My hot water bottles are in the freezer, can't wait to get them out! Now going for a cool shower!

HEATWAVE!!!

HOT WEATHER ESSENTIALS!
  • Close every window
  • Close all curtains and blinds
  • Turn all lights off when/where possible.
  • If you have pale curtains hang something dark over them.
  • Only open windows late evening/middle of night, if air is cooler than in room and close again before sunrise (5.02am tomorrow) to keep all rooms in day as cool as possible – closing them later in morning is too late, as the boiling sun will have been pounding through into the room, raising the temperature to melting point!!!!!
  • Fill hot water bottles with cold water and put in freezer a couple of hours before bedtime and then enjoy icy cold water bottles all night!
  • Keep hydrated, drink lots of water
  • Purchase a Cobber Neck Wrap from Amazon – I have one, its awesome! You soak the wrap in cold water for 30 minutes and then for added coolness, place in freezer for a short while. You can then wear round your neck, head, wrist etc and it stays cold for ages!
  • If you are working.... have a tepid shower as soon as you get home, sit on sofa with fan on and move around as little as possible, apart from doing your tea and only do essential jobs like watering plants, changing bird pools and feeding hedgehogs!!!
  • I wonder if anyone has invented a type of head fan? Wouldn’t that be fabulous!!!😂 Pray for ❄️ ☃️

Meet Up with Vivien, Delivery to Norfolk Hospice Shop & A Great White Egret!

I met up with Vivien at 10am this morning at our family home to have another sort out. We had left a number of boxes of bric-a-brac and unwanted books in the hall, which we had intended on selling at a boot sale, but neither of us could be bothered with the effort of doing one. We kept a few things back to sell, but donated all the rest to the Norfolk Hospice Shop in Hunstanton, which resulted in two car trips! The ladies in the shop were very pleased and I think we filled their little back room to the max! We have already donated tons of stuff to their shop and they remembered me when I walked into the shop. We were probably donating things that our mother had bought in there over the years!

Vivien had a very emotional start to her day. She arrived at the house at 9am, much earlier than she had intended. On her arrival she was shocked to see the cat (as in mother's cat that was) sitting in the front garden! For those of you that don't know, or can't remember...... the cat originally belonged to the village pub, the pub had a fire many years ago and 'Missy' (the cat) had escaped and never returned – my mother found her sleeping in the snow by a tree, many years ago and adopted her – my mother never knew this cat had belonged to the pub. After my mother died last year, we returned the cat to the pub landlady and they were happy to take her back. We heard through someone that works there, that Missy was very pleased to be back with her brother (another cat in the pub) and apart from a few visits back to the house initially, we havn't seen Missy for a long time now. So you can understand Vivien's shock, when Missy greeted her like she had never been away and meowed to go into the house! Vivien did the right thing and plonked the cat on her front car seat and drove her back to the pub. The cat was not overly happy with the car ride, but looked 'ok' Vivien said, when she was returned to her new home. I have been extremely emotional lately about the loss of my mother and I would have been in tears if I had seen the cat, so glad I wasn't there, but felt sorry that Vivien had to deal with the situation. I can't believe that on the 7th August it will be a year since our dear mother died – it doesn't feel like 12 months at all and I miss her so much.

In between our trips to the Hospice Shop, we had fish 'n' chips from 'Sunny Hunny' and later had a 99 ice-cream and a flake. There were tons and tons of people along the promenade for the last night of the Sunset Festival, just east of the pier (that was).

We finished our sort out by mid evening and went to Holme Marsh Reserve NWT for a short while. We saw three Marsh Harriers, a Mute Swan, Mallards, Coot, Wren, Reed Warblers zipping around the reed mace, good numbers of hirundines in the skies and a Grey Heron was seen. Star of the show was a Great White Egret, which I spotted flying over the marshes distantly at 7pm (no pictures I'm afraid). I was horrified to see on the BBC Weather, that a heatwave is going to hit us tomorrow and all week – it will be dripping hot at work! Oh dear!

SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER at Titchwell RSPB!

SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER
Titchwell RSPB
1st for the reserve, 7th for Norfolk

Phonescoped this evening at 6.52pm distantly from Island Hide at Titchwell RSPB. The light was beautiful, after an earlier thunderstorm. Sat in the hide with Eddie M. Also seen: 3 Spoonbills, 1 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Whimbrel flew over west, 3 Common Terns, loads of Avocets, Black-tailed Godwits, Ruff, Redshank, Dunlin, Med Gull, Black-headed Gulls, Shelducks, Little Egret, Teal, Pied Wagtails, Starlings, Marsh Harriers.

I missed last year's Semipalmated Sandpiper at Snettisham RSPB as I was caring for my mother in her final days, before her death on 7th August. When I finished work yesterday I was so tired, I didn't bother going to Titchwell when the Semipalmated Sandpiper was first found, as I truly believed I had seen one before! This is what happens when you don't keep a list and you have a bad memory! It wasn't until today that I remembered that the Semipalmated Sandpiper that I had seen at Cley was then re-indentified as a Western Sandpiper, so I hadn't actually seen one!!! So a new Norfolk tick for me today! I really must get round to doing a list!

Earlier in the day I visited Foxley Woods NWT and saw several Silver-washed Fritillaries, Peacocks, Commas, Ringlets, Painted Ladies, Emperor Dragonfly and bumped into Chris Stone who had been to see the Pacific Golden Plover at Breydon Water this morning. No sign of any Purple Emperor butterflies. It was boiling hot here and I left sooner than I should have done, but wanted to get to Titchwell. I diverted for a short while to Bintree Mill – a place I love, but couldn't even get out of the car, as a massive thunderstorm then broke!

Once Extinct Butterfly Confirmed in Norfolk Wood!

https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/environment/purple-emperor-butterfly-back-50-years-after-being-declared-extinct-1-6164696

Cakes, Hedgehogs, Birds, Diet & Postal Issues!

I made two Victoria Sandwiches today, for the ward and rehab, to give us all a little boost! I think we need to big ourselves up more than we do, after all we are ranked in the country's top 10 Stroke Units! Our hard work, devotion, dedication and caring, is why we are one of the best Stroke Units in the UK!

The Hedgehogs are still visiting my garden every evening, I now regularly see a male and female, no sign of any hoglets yet though! Several young birds in the garden still, including young Song Thrushes. I now have increased numbers of House Sparrows on the feeders and the Goldfinches are enjoying the new RSPB Niger Seed Feeder. Tomato plants are now at their max with yellow flowers and the tiniest little green tomatoes developing! Runner Beans don't look as good as tomato plants though – they had a hard time in the early stages with slugs. I don't use any chemicals or slug pellets, but hopefully I will get a few beans eventually.

I am done with this sticky hot weather, its unbearable! Diet still going well, lost 1.5 lbs last week and another 1 lb this week – total loss is now 21 lbs – still a long way to go yet!

On Monday I received three letters in my door. Two of them had messages written on the envelopes that read the following: "inaccessable garden overgrown" (spelt wrongly). I was fuming to say the least. To the non naturalist, my garden does indeed look overgrown – it is jam packed with nectar loving herbs and plants and I have more bees, hoverflies and insects than probably the entire estate put together! But, the post person CAN access my front door along the main front path, but they choose to take a short cut across my sloped drive and nip between my two borders of plants, which are currently overhanging each other. I put in a formal complaint to the post office and I was apologised to and given a reference number.  I wrote the following message in reply and stuck it to my front door!

"To the post lady or man who wrote on my letters x 2 on Monday 15th July.

You wrote "inaccessible garden overgrown". Inaccessible means 'unable to be reached'. I presume that you meant that you are unable to reach my front door?

If you follow the correct path from front gate, it is totally accessible to my front door.

If you choose to take a short cut across my driveway and across my little path between plants that I use when getting in/out of car – this is your choice.

My garden may well appear overgrown, but as a naturalist, this garden has more bees, butterflies and insects than gardens that are made up of shingle, concrete and decking.

The only thing that is soon due to be trimmed is my hedge. When the Thyme flowers have finished flowering along main path (bees are collecting nectar from) these will be cut back as I do each year. Thank you."

Holme NWT, NOA & Titchwell RSPB!

No sign of the male Red-backed Shrike at Holme Dunes NWT this morning, when I searched thoroughly at 10.15am. I found it very odd that a 'no sign of' message came up on my RBA pager at 9.46am, when you can't access the Forestry until 10am?! Whilst I was here, I didn't see another birder at all! Parked up in the NWT car park and queued up for lunch, but got inpatient. There were too many beach goers, families and dogs for my liking.

Went to HBO and chatted with Sophie for a while. Saw a Stonechat on a fence post just yards from the observatory which was nice. Nothing else of note seen. Returned to my car and went to Titchwell RSPB for lunch and then left to go to the family home for my usual chores. Cleaned and changed the bird baths, watered the plant pots, quick sweep round. Chatted to a neighbour for ages about the house and then a couple turned up unannounced to view the property – I showed them the garden, but not the house and didn't need to anyway as they said it would be too much for them to take on.

Returned to Titchwell RSPB and walked along the main path and joined Mark and Tracey Bradbury. It started to rain, so I relocated to Island Hide. Shortly after I escaped the rain, Mark and Tracey also escaped and went to Parrinder Hide. A very productive evening with highlights being a Little Stint and a Continental Black-tailed Godwit (both found by Mark). Other birds seen: lots of Knot, Black-tailed Godwits, Redshanks, Ruff, Dunlins, Med Gulls, Black-headed Gulls, Shelducks + lots of juvs, Avocets, Teal, Mallard, Pied Wagtails, Common Tern, Marsh Harriers, Cormorants, Egyptian Geese x 2, Lapwings, big Starling flock bathing, Swifts, Swallows, House Martins, Sand Martins, Reed Buntings, Spoonbills x 3, Sedge Warblers, Coot, Moorhens, Oystercatchers.

Around the Fen Trail there was a wonderful surprise! A Water Vole was feeding on reeds at the edge of the Dragonfly Pond! Unusually I had almost no battery left on my iphone, otherwise I would have done a video. 6 Little Egrets, 2 Mute Swans + young on Patsy's Pool, lots of ducks, but didn't ID them properly, as it started to rain again, so I speed walked back to my car.

Drove back along the coast road and pulled in at Gypsy Green, just before the bridge at Old Hunstanton. There was a flood here by the field which held 2 Common Sandpipers (which flew the second I pulled up in the car), 3 Mallards, 1 Black-headed Gull and a Pied Wagtail. I had not expected to see Common Sandpipers here!!! Drove along Waterworks Road as far the golf club entrance road and found a Hare feeding amongst flowers, but no birds of note aside from Wood Pigeons. Parked the car by the church and duck pond at Old Hunstanton, but apart from the usual ducks waiting to be fed, there was nothing else of note here at 8.30pm! Arrived back in King's Lynn – cleaned my bird baths out, topped up bird table and fed the Hedgehogs!

Wimbledon & Gardening!

No birding this weekend. I was spending the day with Lucy yesterday, but she wasn't in the best of moods and cancelled our day out. So, instead I had a wonderful relaxing day, watching all the brilliant Wimbledon matches on offer, whilst enjoying fruit salad and ice-cream!

Today I loaded up the car with gardening tools and birding gear. Drove straight to Titchwell RSPB to buy one of their Niger seed feeders and seed tray to attached underneath – didn't have time to stay on the reserve, plus it was too hot anyway. I spent eight hours in the garden at Holme, doing some serious clearing and cutting back. Anyone viewing the property wouldn't have been able to walk around the top of the garden, so lots of back breaking work had to be done – hand shearing all the nettles down, to create a path around the apple trees. Got the lawnmower out and cut all the grass out the front of the house and the lawn by the greenhouse. General tidy and pulling some of the nettles up elsewhere, weeding, pruning, sweeping up, cleaned all bird baths out and watered the few remaining pot plants. Read the meter – time to pay the electric bill again!

Had a private viewing of the house, when a couple turned up unexpectedly who I know – they seemed very interested now the price has dropped! We had a viewing yesterday and have another one on Monday afternoon – hopefully someone will make a sensible offer soon. It was 9pm when I left the house, so couldn't squeeze any birding in at all! Arrived back at my house in King's Lynn, cleaned all bird baths out, topped up feeders, put hedgehog food out and collapsed on the sofa! No rest for the wicked! Work tomorrow!

I hear from a fellow birder that people are STILL parking their cars one behind the other at the parking area at North Point, Wells. Please park next to each car (as you would in a supermarket car park) as this means more cars will fit in the car park – please think of others, thank you.

FOR SALE: House with huge garden In Holme-next-the-Sea!

https://www.sowerbys.com/property/100439029003/pe36/norfolk/aslack-way/house/2-bedrooms

Our family home has just been reduced in price. Since it went on the market I have always hoped that it would be sold to a birder or naturalist – I will keep my fingers crossed! The house does need lots of work doing on it, but has potential for extending and has a massive garden alongside a horse meadow with views to Holme church and is in a very quiet spot. Additional pictures on my post HERE.
