Extreme Weather!

Last week I was filling up hot water bottles with cold water and freezing them to get some mild relief from the heat wave! Last night and tonight I'm filling hot water bottles with boiling water and considering putting the heating back on again! On second thoughts, its late June, I refuse to put the heating on! My mother has caved in though, I don't blame her, its freezing compared to a week ago, I'm not complaining though, I would rather be chilly then too hot! Its being lashing down with rain all day here in Norfolk and the roads were flooded on my journeys out to see community patients. The weather doesn't look much better over the next couple of days either! Improvements on Saturday with some sunshine in the afternoon, according to the BBC weather forecast.

Birding in the rain at Titchwell RSPB!

Phone-scoped Video with Swarovski ATS 65mm HD Telescope with 25-50x w eye-piece &
Apple iphone 6 with Kowa TSN-IP6 Photo Adapter.

Considering the heavy rain, I had a good selection of birds this evening! A Turtle Dove was 'purring' in the car park. The East Trail produced a Barn Owl, Marsh Harriers x 2, Great Crested Grebe, Tufted Ducks, Little Grebe, Swallows, Swifts, Sand Martins. There were hundreds of tiny baby toads all along the paths around the East Trail – they were so small I could only just see them – I had to step very carefully!

Along the Fen Trail a Cuckoo and Cetti's Warbler were calling, a bedraggled Sedge Warbler posed briefly and a Wren posed briefly by the Fen Hide.

On the Freshmarsh from Island Hide I had several 'two's'! Curlews x 2, Turnstones x 2, Spotted Redshanks x 2, Spoonbills x 2, Little Gulls x 2, Reed Warblers x 2, Pied Wagtails x 2, a Mediterranean Gull, Black-headed Gulls, Herring Gulls, Sandwich Terns, Common Terns, Lapwings, Avocets and juv., Black-tailed Godwits, Shelducks, Teal, Shoveler, Gadwall, Heron, Bearded Tits pinging, Reed Bunting, Cormorants, Oystercatchers, Blackbird, Coots, Moorhens, Redshanks. I could not see any Garganey. As I left Island Hide at about 8pm, I disturbed a huge Starling flock in the willows. A very wet walk back to my car. A squirrel knocked a nest box down in the picnic area as I walked past – on investigation it was luckily empty! Visited mother for a short while, before heading home to sort all my wet gear out!

Lucy's Last Concert of the Season!

So proud of my sister Lucy, who plays 2nd Violin in the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra. She attended all of her rehearsals throughout our father being poorly, his death, funeral and still carried on. She is stronger mentally than the rest of us put together. This was the last concert of the season, which I took my mother to watch as well. Vivien couldn't go as she was working.
After the concert at the Corn Exchange in King's Lynn, we went to Prezzo in the market place to celebrate and Vivien came to join us after she finished work.

After taking everyone home, I spent the rest of the evening watching Ed Sheeran headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury – awesome!

'Chilled' Day at Holme!

Chilled as in it was far too hot to do much at all! The heat has been intense today – extremely muggy and humid and the pollen levels are very high. I used to suffer with hayfever badly in my teens, but it seems to have improved a lot since I have got older. However, the last few days have been dreadful, the worst hayfever I have had for many years. Even after taking hayfever tablets, I have still been sneezing uncontrollably and feel exhausted with it and the usual itchy eyes have been driving me insane.

The best place to be when it is this hot, is my mother's house. Picked Lucy up and off we went to Holme, but stopped on route in King's Lynn to buy mother a nice new recliner deckchair with padded seat to sit in and garden table from 'B&Q' and 'The Range'. It was so hot that I didn't even feel that cool in my mother's house! We had lunch together and just sat and chilled in the house. I had to shut all the curtains to cope with the hayfever symptoms. Mother has had a family of bullfinches in her garden recently, but they were not on show today.

I left it until evening before I ventured out, thinking it would be cooler – it wasn't! I went to Holme Bird Observatory to sit and be with my father in spirit. The new windows and door are in place at the observatory! Looks like they have some new khaki coloured blinds up too. Thank you again to all who have donated! I sat on the raised veranda which was very slightly cooler and scanned the marshes for birds. A Common Buzzard was sitting on a post out on the marsh and at least 4 Common Buzzards were spiralling in the skies along with a Marsh Harrier. I could hear a Cuckoo calling and several Swallows were skimming past. It was a beautiful evening, even though it was boiling hot. A Viper's Bugloss plant had sprung up where father's ashes were, which was comforting. Father's Day tomorrow will feel very sad this year. No dragonflies in the pond or butterflies, which surprised me. But I did see a few Small Tortoiseshells along the Firs Road when I drove down though.

Went to Holme Marsh Reserve but after looking out of Hide one, I left more or less straight away as all the reeds have grown up and I could hardly see the water on the pool. Heard a Cetti's Warbler singing and that was about it.

Spent the rest of the evening back at mother's house. We had a lovely salad (that I made) and strawberries to follow. The best part of the day was when we sat in the garden at 9.30pm!

Tomorrow is going to be even hotter!!! I am at work all day – lovely!!!😧😩😎🌞

A Special Place – East Bank Cley NWT!

Sunset, end of the East Bank at Cley NWT

It hasn't been a 'normal' weekend at all – in fact it hasn't been a normal couple of weeks either. I can't recall the last time if ever, my family have been for a pub lunch together – it was so nice sitting by the River Wensum at Sculthorpe yesterday and spending quality time with my sisters and mother.

Today I had to sort some jobs out that were way overdue and then had to go on a long journey to deliver something. I then headed north to the coast and ended up at Cley! Parked in the East Bank car park and had the entire place to myself. I walked out to the beach and had wonderful views of birds on 'The Serpentine' and 'Arnold's Marsh', including a pair of Redshank with three fluffy young, Tufted Ducks, good numbers of Shelduck and Avocets, Pied Wagtails, Greylag Geese, Mallards, Little Egrets, Little Grebes, Lapwings, Black-tailed Godwits, Black-headed Gulls and Sandwich and Common Terns graced the skies. Swifts and Swallows skimmed over my head in the wind and flocks of Starlings headed west over the East Bank. One Marsh Harrier over the reedbeds and Sedge Warblers singing in the fading light. A pair of Mallards were supervising their young in the pool by the car park – these fluffy chicks were speeding around the pool catching flies and were very entertaining to watch!
It was chilly by the sea, but so beautiful as the sun was setting – I spent a while here sitting on the shingle, thinking and watching Little Terns and Sandwich Terns flying west over the breakers. My parents met on the East Bank, so this is a special place for me.

Sculthorpe Mill!

A lovely family day out with my mother and sisters to Sculthorpe Mill for lunch. Sat outside in the garden behind the pub and had a fabulous lunch and dessert. Lovely views of Banded Demoiselles fluttering along the stream. Unusually we didn't see any Grey Wagtails, but did see a Pied Wagtail and a Blackcap was singing – two Kestrels were hovering over the field next to the pub.

I tried to persuade everyone to go to Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve, but Mother was feeling tired. Drove back to Holme via Burnham Market and chilled in the shade! Saw a couple of Common Buzzards in the thermals on route back.

Lucy and I saw the Little Owl perched on the low fence at Knight's Hill roundabout at King's Lynn as we drove past at 9.50pm! The same bird (I presume) on the same fence post, as the one I saw recently!
