BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH RSPB!

9.47am to 10.47am – Sunday 31st January

Starlings x 6
Blackbirds x 5
Blue Tits x 2
Coal Tit x 1
Great Tit x 1
Robin x 1
Hedge Sparrow x 3
House Sparrow x 13
Wood Pigeon x 1
Collared Doves x 5

Sadly no Song Thrush appeared at all, even though I put out chopped-up apricots, which they seem to love. When I first moved here, almost twenty years ago, I would have Long-tailed Tits, Goldfinches and lots of Chaffinches and also Chiffchaffs in the Spring, but sadly not any more.

After 50 minutes of my survey, all birds scattered when one of my neighbours decided to start a very loud DIY project, which involved smashing something continuously with a hammer, combined with screaming children, just behind the end of my garden fence! I don't think it would have made much difference to my results though, unless it put off my Song Thrush putting in an appearance in the last 10 minutes!

My bird food selection: fat blocks: meal worm & berry, fat balls, finch seed, no mess seed, wildbird seed with flakes, sunflower seeds, niger seed, peanuts, meal worms, mixed dried fruit and home-made granary bread.

Covid-19 Update

Last night was hellish. The pain is getting worse. I was so exhausted from lack of sleep, I found it difficult to even get out of bed, but managed to drag myself to work. A lovely colleague from another team was aware that I was in pain getting out of my car at work and very sweetly asked if I was ok and said lots of kind and supportive things, which made me want to burst into tears. Even with Ibuprofen and Co-codamol I have been in pain all day, but got loads of important jobs done at work. Its been really nice working and being with my lovely colleagues again, even though I was struggling.

I saw a new doctor at 5pm, who basically thought the same as the previous doctor, that I have Costochondritis. He recommended to go back to taking the Naproxen tablets, combined with the Co-codamol and said it may take far longer to improve than I thought – as in several weeks, great! I will probably be sleeping all day tomorrow! Good night!

Covid-19 Update

Last night was awful – the pain was so bad in the right side of my chest, that it became too excruciating to even turn over, so had no choice but to try and snooze on the the sofa downstairs. This was far more comfortable overall, but you can never sleep properly like this. Was far too tired and in pain to go to work really, but stubbornly went anyway. Strong pain relief is not touching this intense pain at all.

Spoke to a GP today (one I don't like) and she arranged a face to face appointment with a GP I don't know at all, tomorrow evening at 5pm. I can't carry on like this. I was so tired this evening, I collapsed with exhaustion on the sofa as soon as I got home. Good night.

MY BIRTHDAY!!!

Awful night's sleep with right chest pain. Got to work on time – miracle! My colleagues gave me a lovely birthday card, thank you all very much. Very busy at work as expected, on my first day back.

Arrived home and felt so exhausted, it felt like someone had drugged me! Spent 20 minutes phoning (re-dialling) Galliano's Pizza to order my birthday tea: vege pizza with onion rings and spicy wedges. Just cracked open a bottle of scrumptious ginger non-alcoholic drink (Rochester Dickensian Recipe GINGER), whilst waiting for tea to arrive!

Enjoyed my delivered healthy 😆 tea, followed by Tiramisu!!! Video-called Vivien and Ray and chatted to Lucy on the phone. Had a brilliant poem from a friend, which Lady P. found very amusing indeed – see below! Thank you to my dear sisters for their cards and cash presents and to my closest friends for their cards. Huge thanks to all the lovely birthday messages I have received by email, Twitter and Facebook – much appreciated from an elderly old bird!!! 21 again x 2 and lots more, oh dear, not funny getting older, but at least I'm still here, well just about! Good night!

Covid Deaths: 'Hard To Compute Sorrow' Of 100,000 Milestone – PM

Covid-19 – Day 24!!!

I woke up early, but still felt so tired and continued sleeping until 12.30pm! Its not looking very hopeful for tomorrow, when I have to get up at 7am! A very dull day here, no sun at all and I didn't go for a walk anywhere. Did lots of little jobs in preparation for work tomorrow. Collected my birthday card from Lucy and then went to M&S to buy a new coat for work and also a dozen red roses for my birthday to cheer myself up. I did ask Lucy if she wanted to go for a socially distanced walk, but she said it was far too cold.

I had originally booked my birthday off as annual leave tomorrow, but cancelled it as didn't think it was right to return to work just for the Thursday and the Friday and also I would have been on my own all day (again) anyway. Normally my sisters and I would have gone for lunch somewhere, but obviously that can't happen this year!

Its going to be quite daunting returning to work with so many people in my team, when I have been completely on my own since the 4th January. My Costochondritis pain remains the same and after another request, my GP kindly phoned me to say he was very surprised that the anti-flammatory drug Naproxen had not made any difference – he thought that it was probably not responding as it would do normally, because of being a Covid related symptom and suggested I try pain relief instead and if this doesn't work to get back to him.

This will be my last daily Covid post, being as I'm back at work, but will post an update every now and again, if my symptoms improve or worsen! Thank you to everyone for all your support and emails, of which I still need to reply to many people yet – huge apologies!

I saw from another birder on Twitter today, that the lead officer for Covid issues for Essex Police is saying that "birdwatching is not permitted exercise (he defines it as recreation). Offenders face fine of £200 on first offence, doubling on subsequent occasions up to £6k limit....."

Ok, that also means that fishing and shooting is a recreation, same thing! Can't have different rules for different people and recreations!!! If you can sit and fish, walk/stand and shoot birds, you can walk and watch birds!!! End of!

Coronavirus: Thirty More Patient Deaths Recorded At King's Lynn Hospital

https://www.lynnnews.co.uk/news/coronavirus-thirty-more-patient-deaths-recorded-at-kings-lynn-hospital-9149472/

Covid-19 – Day 23!!!

I had a lovely phone call from Sarah B (who I work with and Sarah works part-time too) at 11.20am to ask if I wanted to go for a socially distanced walk with her and her little boy – I had to explain that I was still in bed!!! Even after that I closed my eyes again and woke up at 1pm, I know its sounds like I'm the laziest person ever, but seriously its only the Covid that has made me want to sleep so much! The Naproxen tablets still haven't made any difference to my 'Costochondritis' pain – I have no idea why!

Had brunch: poached eggs and baked beans on granary toast, whilst watching all the birds in the garden. My Blackbirds were not happy with me, having to wait for so long for their dried fruit top up! Every day I put the dried fruit out, a tame female Blackbird always dives in first, seconds after I have sprinkled them on the table! I didn't see the Song Thrush today.

This afternoon I went for a walk in a different little spot, where there are flooded fields and saw 55 Curlews, lots of Black-headed Gulls, 2 Redshanks, 1 Snipe, 1 Heron, Pheasants, Robin and a Blue Tit. It was nice to go somewhere different for a change. One day left, then I'm back at work on my birthday! I better have a practice run and get up at 7am tomorrow!

Covid-19 – Day 22!!!

I know this sounds crazy, but I woke up at 2.30pm! The Naproxen tablets still haven't made any difference to my 'Costochondritis' – hopefully the pain will disappear soon. I really don't know how I'm going to have the strength to get up in the dark for work on Wednesday!

Had a shower, washed hair. Put some of my fruit cake out for the Blackbirds and Robins and had a new visitor to my garden! A Song Thrush appeared and was soon gobbling up pieces of brandy fruit cake – that will keep it warm later! Its ages since I last saw a Song Thrush, a lovely surprise. Drove into town to collect something ordered from M&S and then walked all around the town via the quayside in semi darkness to get some exercise. Saw a Cormorant, Pied Wagtail, Blackbird and a few Mallards.

I heard some very sad news today via the Norfolk Link Magazine, which is emailed to me, Clifford Rumbellow husband of Pauline passed away on 3rd January aged 80 years. They live in Holme, only a few doors away from what was our family home. Both Pauline and Clifford have always been extremely supportive to all our family, especially when my mother was poorly. They have lived in their cottage since before my family moved into Holme, one of the few original locals left in the village. Such sad news. My sincerest condolences to Pauline and to her son Paul (who I went to school with) xxx.

Rest In peace Clifford 🕊

Covid-19 – Day 21!!!

Saturday 23rd January

The Naproxen tablets have not kicked in yet at all and my 'Costochondritis' remains the same.  There was a small amount of sleet late afternoon, but nothing else. Lots of birds in the garden again today, including at least 6 Blackbirds, 30+ House Sparrows, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Starlings, Robin, Wood Pigeon and Collared Doves. Vivien sent me snowy pictures from Ely, so they had a fair bit there! She also sent me a cute picture of the local Muscovy Duck, enjoying some brown bread next to the narrow boat!

Finally went food shopping at Sainsbury's late this evening to avoid the crowds. Its seriously slippery and icy out there this evening, so watch out in the morning. I felt exhausted just putting the shopping away, I don't know how I'm going to manage going back to work next week, but I'll give it my all!

Covid-19 – Day 20!!!

Last night, the pains in the right side of my chest got worse and it was increasingly painful to turn over in bed. When I eventually got up, I filled in the on-line form that you have to do now, if you want to speak to a GP – I knew it would be a while before anyone rang me. Late afternoon I got in the car and drove into town to buy some calcium tablets from BOOTS that I had run out of. It was the first time I had left the house since last Sunday! Whilst walking to the chemist, a GP from my surgery rang me to discuss my symptoms and asked me to come to the surgery at 5.30pm – I was very pleased to get an appointment that quickly!

After seeing me, my doctor diagnosed me as having Costochondritis, which he thought was related to my Covid and was a 'post viral infection'. On the NHS website it is described as "inflammation of the cartilage that joins your ribs to your breastbone (sternum). This area is known as the costochondral joint. Cartilage is tough but flexible connective tissue found throughout the body, including in the joints between bones. It acts as a shock absorber, cushioning the joints. Costochondritis may improve on its own after a few weeks, although it can last for several months or more. The condition does not lead to any permanent problems, but may sometimes relapse." Another link here.

My GP took my temperature, which was 37ºC, Pulse 72 and SATS were 96% – so that was all good. He also used a stethoscope to listen for any breathing or chest issues etc and told me it was all fine – he didn't think it was anything more serious and advised me to take ibuprofen or Naproxen (which I had at home) to reduce the inflammation and it should get better over time.

Costochondritis, seemed to ring a bell with me and I felt sure I had this before, so searched in "Search My Blog" and found that I ended up in A&E with this in 2011, when I thought I had heart problems!!!

I'm hearing more and more little tales of birders being stopped by police along the coast and getting warnings and some getting fines, so stick to the rules and stay 'local', unless you want to lose £200!!!

Watched the entire Biden inauguration live –  Joe's speech was incredible. So many emotional moments with Kamala Harris being sworn in as the first female, first black and first Asian-American Vice President. 22 year old Amanda Gorman has become the youngest poet ever to perform at a presidential inauguration, calling for "unity and togetherness" in her self-penned poem – wow, such confidence and words of wisdom for someone so young! Coronavirus: King's Lynn Hospital Death Toll Reaches 300

https://www.lynnnews.co.uk/news/coronavirus-kings-lynn-hospital-death-toll-reaches-300-9148618/

Covid-19 – Day 15!!!

Slept like a log last night, without taking any sleeping tablets, woke up around 9.30am and still felt tired – went back to sleep again and woke up at just before 2pm!!! I can't believe how much I'm sleeping! Had cheese and tomato on toast for brunch. Topped up the bird feeders and then decided to go for a little walk from the house. Walked along the cycle path and as far as the large marsh and river. Saw 2 Kestrels, a Common Buzzard sitting on a bush and a Heron flying across the marsh. Lots of Mallards in the river, but far too many people and dogs. I was shocked by the increase of litter on my walk, everything from beer cans, sweet and food wrappers, drinks containers, tobacco wrappers, plastic bags of dog crap hanging on bushes etc – one of the many reasons I don't walk along here very much, not a pleasant experience at all.

Back at home, I fell asleep again! Everything I do is exhausting, anybody would think I had just walked Blakeney Point, the way I was feeling! Watched a brilliant travel documentary at 9pm on BBC4 called "Ireland to Sydney By Any Means" – Part 1, starring Charley Boorman along with his producer Russ and cameraman Mungo, who travel through three continents, 25 countries and over 20,000 miles from Ireland to Australia, avoiding commercial airlines wherever possible.

Covid-19 – Day 13!!!

Last night, I managed to get to sleep eventually without taking any sleeping tablets. I woke up at around 10am and still felt tired, so went back to sleep again and got up around lunchtime. This virus makes you insanely fatigued. I had just finished some marmalade on toast (brunch) when my team lead rang to ask how I was. The good news is that this is the second day I have not had a temperature, but still have the tickly and slightly sore throat and also my lips feel like they are going to blister, they feel so sore!

Late afternoon, around 3.45pm, I decided to get in the car for the first time since Sunday 3rd January. Its the longest my car has not been driven and I fully expected the battery to be flat. As soon as I turned the engine on, a message flashed up that the battery was low. The car probably needs a good run to fire the battery up, but I just needed to go to the chemist to pick up another prescription. On route home I decided I would buy fish 'n' chips and deliberately went to the furthest away fish 'n' chip shop to give the car battery a boost. Returned home and sadly didn't enjoy my meal at all – the fish and the chips tasted really odd, bascially because my taste and smell have not returned yet.

Lots of birds in the garden again, but they all vanished suddenly mid afternoon, when an unknown chunky black cat with green/blue eyes appeared next to the bird feeders – it duly shot over the fence after I rattled on the window! Snow forecast for tomorrow I see and then sunny on Sunday.

Sending love and hugs to all my colleagues and everyone working at the QEH, who I know are struggling to keep their heads above water and to all my colleagues who are also off work with this wicked virus – hope you all feel better soon 💙 💙 💙

Covid-19 – Day 12!!!

After going to bed last night, I decided to try and sleep again without taking any medication. After an hour I gave up and took two sleeping tablets. I tossed and turned for hours, they didn't seem to work!!! I couldn't believe it! Got up twice and watched TV and then returned to bed. The next thing I know, my sister Vivien is ringing me and its 12.45pm! So the tablets obviously worked, but took considerably longer than the stated "takes around one hour to work"!

It was snowing this afternoon, well sleet to be more exact – it was too wet to lay. My throat still feels tickly and slightly sore, but didn't have any temperature issues today for the first time. I still feel so exhausted though. Replenished all the bird feeders, cleaned the bird baths out and put out dried fruit and an apple for my Blackbirds. Lots of House Sparrows, Starlings and Collared Doves in the garden, along with a Robin, Great Tits, Coal Tits, Blue Tits, Hedge Sparrow and Wood Pigeon.

At 7pm I decided to venture out of the house for the first time to post and return my Oxygen Sats Monitor that I purchased from Amazon via 'Hermes' courier service. There is a post office/corner shop only a couple of streets away from where I live – I put my cosy Muck Boots on, wrapped up well, mittens on, hood up and off I went. By the time I got home I felt liked I had walked 10 miles or more. Also the cold air had made my throat worse and I felt like I was gasping for breath – this settled once sat on the sofa again. I hadn't expected to feel like that, this virus has obviously taken more from me than I thought.

Forced myself to cook some tea, which I didn't feel like eating. Can't really taste anything and my mouth has tasted like poison the last few days. It felt so odd leaving the house this evening and seeing another human being (staff in the shop) for the first time in ages. Everything seems so strange at the moment. Our entire way of life has changed and its going to take a good while before we can return to normal – whatever 'normal' is!!!

Covid-19 – Day 11!!!

I felt so tired last night, that I didn't think I needed to take any sleeping tablets....... I tossed and turned until 3am. Came downstairs, watched TV, took one sleeping tablet and returned to bed and didn't get up until lunchtime.

Now the back of my throat feels slightly sore and tickly when I draw breath and I developed a slight temperature again early evening, which was 37.6C. I'm so fed up with all these symptoms and just wish they would all disappear.

My self-isolating 10 days is up (from the day I was diagnosed 4th January) and tomorrow I could go back to work or leave my house etc. I'm not well enough to return to work yet and certainly need to get my insomnia sorted out. At least I can walk out of my property tomorrow if I feel up to it. I didn't walk along the path outside today at all. I feel so exhausted and this seems to be getting worse each day.

Coronavirus Fines Issued At The Coast – Norfolk

Covid-19 – Day 10!!!

So, last night I took a Zopiclone 3.75mg tablet, which did not work how I hoped it would at all. It settled me, but I struggled to get to sleep for several hours, to the point where out of desperation I had 5mls of Oramorph!!! This worked and I got a few hours sleep!

Contacted my surgery for the doctor to send me a message via their email system, but she kindly phoned me back with a reply to my query "can I take two of these tablets?". She told me I could take two tablets if I needed to.

My temperature was 38C this morning and I felt rough. I felt sleepy all day and managed to have several naps. Late afternoon my lower back became painful again and was sore to touch – took paracetamol and this improved. I don't understand why my temperature fluctuates so much?! Then a while later I felt really chilly, something I don't feel normally!

I phoned Occupational Health at work this afternoon, to ask them some questions and advice and was shocked to hear that someone they know has been suffering with their temperature going up and down since their Covid diagnosis in April 2020!!!! OH told me to contact my GP if my temperature continued to go up.

Everything has been a huge effort today of what little I have done. Did some marching up and down the path late afternoon and managed to wash my hair. Made a vege sausage sandwich for tea and that was about it. Vivien and Ray sent me a lovely get well card, which I initially thought was an early birthday card.

RBA Weekly Round-Up 5th to 11th January!

By Jon Dunn

Monday 11 January 2021

Covid-19 – Day 9!!!

An entire night of no sleep! I have never experienced insomnia like this EVER! My legs are shaking with exhaustion and I feel faint. I put a message on Facebook about the insomnia and asked how long it would go on for – an old school friend who is still suffering with Covid, replied with "I hate to be the one to say it Penny but I’m 4 weeks post COVID and insomnia is still here along with many other things, take care xxx"

My taste and smell has gone today too! I thought I'd got away with that symptom. Managed to cook a tofu stir fry and had some fruit. I did my marching up and down the front path to try and get rid of the pains in my legs, but this didn't work. Had to take some paracetamol later, as my lower back pain (temperature) was too much to cope with.

I couldn't handle it any more and filled in the on-line form for a GP to ring me back. Got prescribed Zopiclone (sleeping tablet). I've never had a sleeping tablet in my life, but can't go on like this. I can't seem to catch up in the daytime either. Its torture. My good friend and work colleague Hilary, kindly picked up my prescription this evening and put it on my doorstep for me, for which I'm very grateful.

Looking forward to full night's sleep tonight with my new tablet! I'm not going to get in the habit of taking a sleeping tablet every night, as don't want to become addicted, but its nice to know I have them, when things get desperate!

Covid-19 – Day 8!!!

Another night of bad sleep, but had a few more hours than the previous night. Felt very weak today. Marched up and down the front path quite a few times, so boring, but can't be breaking rules and walking down the road. The Blackbirds had to wait longer than they usually do for their dried fruit, but they got some in the end. Kept falling asleep on the sofa.

I made the effort to make Pear and Ginger Crumble today – I really regretted doing this for a couple of reasons – the recipe did not work out at all and the entire thing exhausted me. The recipe told you to cook the crumble first on a baking tray for 15 minutes – after 8 minutes the crumble was very dark all around the edges, so those sections had to be binned! Too much liquid in the cooled fruit. It was edible, but too sweet and was glad nobody was eating it but me! I've cooked several crumble dishes over the years and this one was made differently and I thought it would make a change – stick to what you know!

My temperature rose again mid/late evening, not to anything seriously high, but enough to make me feel crap. Skin still sore. So fed up with this now and I'm going stir crazy, having to stay in the house.

Covid-19 – Day 7!!!

I didn't take any Oramorph last night – I wish I had. Another long night of no sleep. Wrecked again today. Still have a mild temperature, and skin sore to touch, especially on my back. Topped up the bird feeders. Did some marching outside in the garden in foggy weather. Can't keep awake to even watch 'The Voice', which I love, so now attempting to go to bed, good night.

'It's Like A War Zone' – Staff Describe 'Horrendous' Hospital Conditions As Covid Admissions Rise!

Police Fine Couple For 120-mile Trip To See The Seals At Horsey!

Covid-19 – Day 6!!!

When I was admitted to hospital on 31st October, I was administered Oramorph to relieve my back/hip pain and was prescribed some for when I was discharged. I recall it sending me to sleep pretty quickly, so being as I still had some left....... I decided to take 2 paracetamol and a 5ml dose or Oramorph last night! I was desperate, I simply couldn't go through another night of no sleep and restless leg syndrome! I was in bed by 10pm. It worked BRILLIANTLY! I remember getting in bed and the next thing I knew, I was opening my eyes and it was 9am!!! I had slept for 11 solid hours, without waking once!!! Vivien told me off when I told her later and said I could have gone unconscious! Maybe I had! But, I'm still here!

Even after all that sleep, I still felt tired though and dossed around in my dressing gown most of the day. Had a shower and washed my hair later. Still have a slight temperature and still have the painful right side and generally feel very exhausted. Felt too tired to doing any marching up and down my garden path today – will make up for it tomorrow hopefully.

Watched a brilliant film "THE WIFE" on BBC2 this evening – "Successful writer Joe Castleman is delighted to receive an early morning telephone call from Sweden informing him that he has won this year's Nobel Prize for Literature. His steadfast wife Joan is equally delighted, but as she prepares to travel to Stockholm to support and encourage her husband, she reflects on her life from when she first met Joe, her married literature tutor with whom she embarks on the affair which would change the course of their lives." Watch it on BBC iPlayer: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000qzy4/the-wife

I won't be taking any Oramorph tonight, its addictive stuff and for emergencies only! Last night was an emergency! Good night all.

Number Of Covid Patients In Norfolk Hospitals Passes 500!

Covid-19 – Day 5!!!

ANOTHER NIGHT of almost no sleep!!! So fed up! I'm wrecked and yet don't seem able to catch up during the day either. Shivery back pain developed again last night and this has increased throughout today. Yesterday I thought I was getting better. Temperature back again this evening 37.8C. I feel really emotional and a couple of times almost burst into tears – don't know if this is another symptom of Covid or that I'm simply exhausted.

I put a message and question up on Facebook today to see if any of my work colleagues, who have suffered with or are suffering with Covid, have had Insomnia issues and found that several of them had! Made me feel slightly better to know I wasn't the only one. Good night.

Covid-19 – Day 4!!!

I had another very bad night, as in I hardly slept at all, then developed severe restless leg syndrome. Apparently, not being able to sleep at night is one of the many Covid symptoms. I was downstairs at some bizarre hour, watching mindless stuff on TV and eating cashew nut butter on toast with a cup of tea!

I think I fell asleep early morning for a couple of hours. Tried to get back to sleep again, but couldn't and eventually got up late morning. Apart from feeling wrecked, I felt less shivery today and the pain in my right side of chest and shoulder seemed a bit better. Did lots of marching up and down the path in my garden twice today, which is getting very boring now, but need to get fresh air and keep mildly fit!

Lots of birds in the garden again, including a new count of 10 Collared Doves! Unfortunately though, one visitor was not a welcome sight!!! 🐀 I have run out of mince pies, so sacrificed some of my newly made fruit cake for the Blackbirds, they looked very pleased!

The oxygen sats and heart monitor arrived from Amazon early this evening. What a waste of money and time that was!!! Every reading was different and the numbers were so low, that basically it was informing me I was dead! Not quite!!! So that will be returned when I'm allowed out again!!! I won't bother ordering another brand!

So many staff I work with and know in the hospital have Covid right now, it is extremely worrying indeed – I hope to God they all get through this. I was in tears this evening as I watched the BBC news – the staff at University College Hospital in London were emotionally drained and in utter despair – it was difficult to watch, but I know the same will be happening in my own hospital and every hospital in this country. I started to watch 'Question Time' this evening and one of the panel said she had had a message to say that the police were picking up and taking Covid patients to London hospitals, as there was no ambulances available!
