SHETLAND BIRD NEWS & MORE!

Rare  Bird  Alert  News
None.

A mixed day of weather here with strong winds and much cooler this evening. More painting after work, the novelty is wearing off now. I was watering my plant pots late evening and I suddenly became aware of a House Sparrow (youngster), which appeared to still be feeding in the Roamwild fat ball feeder, when all other birds have gone to roost. To my horror and upset, it had its head stuck inside the section where the fat balls were – I quickly brought the feeder indoors and unscrewed the larger bird protection cage and tried to see why it was stuck. It was still moving, so all was not lost yet. I couldn't work out how it had got stuck and I couldn't remove it initially, it was only when I tipped out the remaining three fat balls, that I was able to release it. There was blood at the base of the wings, obviously from struggling to free itself. Maybe a fat ball had dropped down just enough to trap its head against the internal metal green cage. It looked exhausted, but was still warm. I took it outside and dripped some water into its beak and sat it very carefully in a large plant pot, but it fluttered away quickly into the large fuschia bush. I will be shocked if its still alive in the morning, very, very distressing. I have never had this happen with any bird feeder before – must be a design fault and needs to be addressed asap. I found this on FB, its happened to others too. I will email Roamwild about this right now. 😢 😭

Rare  Bird  Alert  News
Quail at Bakkasetter.

Today wasn't as glorious as yesterday, but still quite sunny and no rain at all. At least 60+ House Sparrows in my garden, so many that I had a job to count them properly, also juv Starlings with adults, one male Siskin and Rock Doves. I decided to have a break from decorating, enough is enough.

Jill and Rob's house at Watsness and loch on route to the beach
Just imagine the cost of this on the Norfolk coast!

Had a wonderful drive out west to Watsness to visit Jill and Rob and to see all their house renovations since my last visit. I worked out that I have not been there since December at least, where has the time gone?! The last section of the journey is single track roads, with less passing places than is usual in Shetland. Their house looks fabulous painted white with blue window frames, it really stands out now and looks really beautiful. There are not many people who have a loch view, sea view and a view of the island of Foula! The surrounding landscape is truly stunning. After looking round at all the amazing work they have done on their house and saying hello to their gorgeous cats and hens, Jill took me on a guided tour down to "her" beach and walk around the cliff tops.

I have not had a walk out in the countryside for a long time (way overdue) after doing so much house and garden work, so it was truly wonderful to be out and in Jill's good company. This is the first time I have walked around Watsness Loch and the cliff tops.

I know some of the flowers in Shetland, but Jill certainly knows more than me, plus she has a brilliant App on her phone for identifying flowers, can't remember what its called now though. The stony beach is reached via stiles and small dykes and really is off the beaten track. Arctic Terns sitting on the rocks, along with Turnstones and Ringed Plovers on the beach, Shags and also the odd Fulmar soaring around. Lots of rabbit burrows, so need to watch your step. Further along the cliff top, it was a delight to watch a couple of fluffy Fulmar chicks, high up on a cliff face. Back on Watsness Loch, there was a female Tufted Duck with 11 young!

As we walked back and not far from the house, a distant falcon came into view, I felt confused at first, as I wasn't sure what it was exactly – it it had narrow and very long wings and its flight was heavy and fairly slow – just because of the length of wings and overall size and flight pattern, my first though was a Peregrine, but the wings were too narrow for that I decided. It was distant and through my binoculars all I could see colour wise, was overall brown and I saw a flash of white somewhere on the face/head as it turned – we watched it for approximately 2 minutes at the most, before it flew off over a ridge and didn't return. I didn't take any photos, as my camera was zipped up in my bag (mistake), but Jill managed to get some pictures and although they were not exactly her best shots, she did far better than me! The pictures are on her blog HERE. Several birders are saying its a Hobby after Jill put pictures on the Shetland WhatsApp group, but it seemed too long winged for that (have seen lots and lots of hobbies in Norfolk and elsewhere). Rob thought it could be an Elenora's when he first looked at the back of Jill's camera. Anyway, shortly after that, we watched a dark phase Arctic Skua fly over the loch and out to sea.

Had another coffee back in the house with Jill and Rob. Attempted to coax two of the cats, including the gorgeous stripey tabby "Bentley" onto my lap with cat treats, well he didn't quite make my lap, but allowed me to stroke him for first time, I will have to work on him snoozing on my lap! Left later than I had intended and cruised back home to Scalloway. I felt like I was on holiday this afternoon after all the work I have been doing – at "work" and at home. Frustrating to see the bird feeders stripped again when I arrived home.

Another stunning day here. Margaret invited me round for a catch up – we sat in her gorgeous garden and she kindly gave me a cup of tea and one of her divine oatcakes – her garden is truly stunning. I showed Margaret and Alistair all my latest additions in the garden and my newly painted room and carpet. I finished the second coat of gloss around door frame and shelves and finished the undercoat for window frames, which took forever.  Cut the grass, topped up the bird feeders and tidied up of the garden. Nipped in Lerwick to get more DIY stuff and a top up shop in Tescos. Midges out in force this evening, as I was watering my pots.

My gorgeous "Shetland" carpet was laid today by "A One Flooring". The two gentlemen fitting the carpet did a fantastic job. I'm so glad I picked that colour, it really does look like sand – its a warm yellowish colour and goes brilliantly with my brilliant white walls and turquoise paint. I also paid to have Cloud Nine 11mm underlay for extra warmth. Yesterday I bought a large dust sheet, as I still have a second coat of white gloss to paint on the shelves (was a wardrobe) and door frame. I also need to touch up the dark turquoise paint after I removed the masking tape and also need to paint the wood next to the windows frames, which I sanded down this morning.

I didn't do anything else today apart from nap alot – I felt totally exhausted from a marathan week at work and decorating late every evening. I will attempt to put the new radiator up myself, if not I will have to pay someone to do it and also need to order the blinds now – also from "A One Flooring". Then I can put my new flat pack desks together. Another lovely day here. I had a Siskin on the feeders, I have not seen any here for a while, so lovely to see.

Another warm and sunny day –  the only person in my team at work today and very busy. Decorating again after work this evening. Last night of decorating my studio/office on Thursday evening. Carpet being laid on Friday! Cutting things fine as usual! I have one more thing to do, which shouldn't be a problem after the carpet is fitted, I'm going to paint the dark brown window surrounds a lighter turquoise – I have already bought the paint (special mix), so ready to do that at the weekend. I have oil based dark turquoise paint in my hair and probably added some white splashes after painting the ceiling, oh dear, never mind! I'm going to have a decorating break after that and escape out somewhere.

Another warm and sunny day – more decorating after work this evening. I know that my posts are not exactly exciting at the moment, but I really need to get as much done to my house as I can before Autumn migration starts and need to get the rest of my stuff unpacked, which I can now start doing after the carpet is laid on Friday.

Very warm and sunny all day – felt very tired, so didn't start decorating until very late in the day. Lovely to have a visit from Jill and Rob this evening, who inspected my painting skills – not perfect by any means, but not too bad for an amateur! After watching a Youtube video, I managed to replace the large wallpaper patch where the old storage heater was and its not perfect, but looks loads better than it did.

50 plus House Sparrows feeding in my garden and Starlings hooving up dropped seed, being as they can't access most of the feeders. Huge fun to watch young House Sparrows perched on top of my life sized lamb. Lots of bathing in the drinking baths – lots of bird action on a gloriously sunny day.

Very warm and sunny this morning, then foggy when I had to nip into Lerwick to buy a decorating tool and then this evening it started to rain and currently raining very heavily!

An electrican came out yesterday to re-measure the small cupboard where the boiler is situated and temporily got it working again for me. Today they had to return to turn if off permanently as the water was beyond boiling point and dripping out of the outlet pipe outside the house. Hopefully this will get replaced soon, not looking forward to the mess involved of removing that tank in my kitchen. The cupboard space is smaller than the tank and the electrician said the cupboard doors must have been built after the tank was installed, which means some of the cupboard will have to be removed to get it out!

Another lovely sunny day here again and perfect temperature. Thank goodness its not boiling hot here, like it is down south. Painting all day and nipped to GTS in Lerwick to buy my first Rointe Belize 990W WiFi Electric Radiator, which is for the new office/studio. When I have completed this room, I will get an electrician to remove all my very old storage heaters and replace with new Rointe Belize radiators.

PACIFIC SWIFT by cliffs just north of Virkie.
Quail singing at Loch of Hillwell.

At last a sunny day whilst I was at work, so it was nice to see the glittering sea from the hospital windows! Unprecedentedly busy at work, so had no energy to do all the decorating I should be doing in the evenings, so it will be hard at it on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. No heatwave forecast here thank goodness.

My lovely red rose bush (which I think is called "Sealed with a Kiss"), which I dug up from my garden in Norfolk and put in a huge pot, has loads of buds and two roses out just come out into flower and looking the best ever, so along with the fragrant smell of this and the huge existing Mock Orange Shrub in the front garden, its all smelling very fragrant and the bees seem to be happy in my garden too, especially with the newly planted borage in the driveway and my new "Big Blue" Sea Holly and my herbs etc. I have spent so many pennies at Planticrub Garden Centre to get my garden established, I don't think I need to visit until 2025!

Lots of families of House Sparrows and juv Starlings stripping my bird feeders and a couple of Siskins yesterday – can't keep up with them! My latest fun additions to the garden include a cheeky smiling upside down gnome hanging from a swing in the large sycamore, to amuse folk accessing Gallow Hill and in the front garden a laying down on his belly birdwatching gnome which I love, some cute bunnies, couple of fairies on a seasaw, some reflection stainless steel balls and a Canary positioned in a shrub in pot – all good fun and adds to amusement to the garden!

I have not been birding for AGES, so I escaped for a little while this afternoon and headed south to see the Gull-billed Tern at Scatness. I was the only person here at Loch of Gards! Spitting with rain on and off all day, so not the best of light, but what fabulous views of this awesome tern, as it flew around the loch to feed, wow and a new bird for me! Arctic Terns also and 5 Swallows skimming over the water. The Gull-billed Tern disappeared around 6.30pm, so I left.

At The Grutness Pool there were 4 Dunlins feeding, Oystercatchers, Arctic Terns, juv gulls and House Sparrows. Checked out the Pool of Virkie to see if I could find the Gull-billed Tern, but couldn't find it anywhere. Good numbers of waders including several Dunlin, Ringed Plovers, Oystercatchers, Curlews and Eiders.

Made it home in time to watch Spain beat England 😞 Spain have had an awesome day with Carlos Alcaraz beating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final today too!

The best day since we had a lovely warm spell in May. Glorious blue skies all day long and the sea glittering in the sunshine from the hospital windows. It would have been a lovely evening for a walk or and some birding, but I was filling holes with wood filler! I watched the first half of the Spain/France match and watching the speed and agility both sides were playing, England have no hope at all on beating Spain IF they reach the final, just saying!

I'm still here! The right side of my head feels very tender to touch, is sore and still swollen and I do feel worried about it, so made a point of not doing anything to raise my blood pressure. A beautiful sunny day here at last. Started preparing for decorating this evening and now I'm seriously behind schedule. I will more than probably have to cancel the carpet being fitted on Friday. I have done loads of scraping, sanding and going over the window frames with a damp cloth. My clothes are all white dust and I have hoovered me and the floor from the sanding. Filled all the holes with wood filler.

Tomorrow evening after work I can put the undercoat on the window frames, some sections of skirting and shelves in what was the inbuilt wardrobe and maybe get the first coat of turquoise paint on the frames. Not much birding getting done lately I'm afraid, but I'm determined to get everything done by Christmas and I certainly don't want to be doing house stuff in September and October! Chosen "Cashew" black out blinds, which are extremely insulating and made to measure so there are no gaps from Duette® Blinds and buying from A1 Flooring in Lerwick, the same company who are fitting my carpet.

The garden looks amazing, even though I say so myself, I have worked really hard to fill every space with window boxes, pots, creativity etc. I will post some pictures of the garden when I have finished the office/studio. Lots of bees on the borage and on my blue thistle and other flowers and also one Red Admiral. Can't wait for all my colourful annuals to come out into flower. Got fed up with the mouldy wet logs bought from Jewsons (which they keep outside), which are not drying out, so put all the wettest ones outside and in the brick barbeque, which actually looks really good. Will get some bags of dry hard wood delivered from elsewhere in a few weeks time. I still have no hot water for washing up or bathroom sink, as the immersion tank has died completely now, still waiting for quotes from two electricians.

Black-throated Diver at Bay of Quendale.

Today I had an accident. I tripped over my front gate door stop, which is basically a small metal stump and is only a couple of inches high – its camouflaged against the concrete path and I have tripped over this before, but never fallen until today. I was carrying a tall clay plant pot with plant in, tripped and cracked my head on the sharp edge of the large concrete gate pillar. I have never hit my head as bad as this before. I sat on the step next to the gate for a good 15 minutes and didn't dare move. Went indoors and sat with ice on my head for a good half an hour and didn't move for several hours. I can feel a bump and its difficult to turn my head to the right. My head took the entire impact of the fall, as I had the plant pot in both hands, so no wonder my head hurts. It won't happen again as I have now put a bright purple ceramic plant pot over the metal stop! The clay plant pot didn't survive, hopefully I will!

Sunny all day for the first time in ages, until I get home from work and then it switches to gloomy dark skies and light rain. So frustrating when I have plants to put in the garden.

Received some sad news today, about my very old friend Christine Paine – her husband Clive called me this evening to let me know that Christine had had a major stroke in January and was now more or less bed bound at home – things don't sound too good at all.

Christine very kindly gave me a roof over my head, when I found myself in a very difficult situation in my early twenties. I was working at The Lavenham Press Ltd at the time. I was desperately looking for somewhere to live, as I urgently needed to get out of a situation I was in. Someone told me that a lady in Lavenham sometimes has lodgers and I was directed to where she lives. It was pouring with rain and I was soaked and on my bicycle (didn't have a car then). I remember feeling quite scared about knocking on someone's door who I didn't know, but Christine greeted me with a big beaming smile, invited me in for a cup of tea and was so kind and friendly. She was an extremely trusting and lovely person and did me a huge favour at a very difficult time.

I lodged with Christine for quite a while in her little cottage in Hall Road, Lavenham, Suffolk. Very fond memories there and of her gorgeous cats Garfield and Marmaduke. We used to have some fascinating chats. Christine was very religious, a passionate gardener and was extremely interested in history and particularly her family tree. Happy times long ago. I recall Christine coming to my wedding with her first husband in 1992. Sadly her husband died a few years later and further down the line, she married the true love of her life Clive and they have lived in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk since they have been together. I would like to go and see her, but as you all know, its not simple getting off Shetland. 😢

As I was reversing into my driveway after work this evening, a couple were walking close by and smiled. I suddenly realised it was Chris Creedy and his wife Tracey, who moved to Unst a few years ago. I knew Chris from him birding at Holme Bird Observatory, a good few years ago, but had not met Tracey, so it was lovely to meet her. We had a lovely catch up and I showed them round my house and garden – it was nice to have some visitors. Cold and dull weather here again today.
