Snow and sleet showers all day. Extreme condensation on all my windows, especially in bathroom and office/studio, will have to mop up daily. Lots of birds feeding in my garden, but nothing out of the ordinary yet. I did see my Leucistic House Sparrow again yesterday, which I was pleased about as hadn't seen it for a while. Feeling worried about travelling to work in the morning, even with my Winter tyres. The start of my journey will be the most scary part, as my drive is on a hill and the T-junction at the bottom of the hill is yards from the harbour! I could get the bus at 8.20am, but returning home, I have to wait for 50 mins + for the bus to pick me up and get home over an hour later than what I would in the car. I will do this if the weather is extreme, nice to have the option.

  1. The condensation may not last.... this is your first winter in a house that has been technically vacant for a long while... think of the state of the floor you had to replace.... the entire interior of the house needs to dry out.... that may well take this winter!!
It might be worth buying a humidity meter if you haven't got one... most houses should be at 50% to 40% if you don't want wood to shrink.
Good luck!! Also, going down to your junction, you could coast in 1st or 2nd... feet on clutch and brake... and let the engine do the braking for you.... yes, it will be slower, but better slow than sorry!!

  2. re. condensation problem highly recommend investing in a de-humidifier - not too expensive but work especially at this time of year. Regards Steve from Honley

  3. Unfortunately the only answer to excess condensation is having a window open, even if only a tiny bit, it's ventilation that you need. Try to keep bathroom and kitchen doors shut when you're in there, bathing, cooking, whatever, to stop steam escaping to the rest of the house.

  4. you can of course get a dehumidifier, I had one in Scotland, it collected about a gallon a day, and even that wasn't enough to stop condensation, but then of course it's using electricity. There's no easy answer to condensation in a cold climate! I'm wondering if it's something to do with that stream that's running under your house, could that water be seeping upwards and making the walls damp?
And don't dry any laundry indoors, that just makes it worse, but I'm sure you know this already.

  5. It would be worth purchasing a dehumidifier Penny. It would help considerably re the condensation.
