Weekend Update!
Last week was horrible – went to work on Monday and did something at work which resulted in me doing my back in, but didn't realise how much until Tuesday afternoon. Woke up Tuesday morning feel seriously dizzy and not able to go to work. Later on that day, my back was so painful I could hardly walk and on Wednesday I couldn't walk upright – the pain was really bad, the worst back pains I have ever had and couldn't even put my socks on. I was also experiencing severe pins and needles in both my hands on and off for several days. I phoned the surgery and got a call back from a nurse, who advised me to take Voltarol (that I had in the house) and Paracetamol to relieve the pain and to keep moving, but to sign myself off work for a week. Moving was easier said than done, especially when laying flat felt more comfortable! It was quite frightening to be honest, as I have never had pains like these in my back before – I was not able to stand upright properly until Friday. The Voltarol definitely helped, but I felt very drugged up and slept alot. Since I arrived home from work on Monday evening, I didn't go out of my front door at all until Saturday morning.
Over the weekend I sold the piano (at last) – to a very nice lady in Burnham Market (still to be collected though), I've also sold a Norwegian Jumper (that was sitting on the top shelf of my parent's airing cupboard for years), a first edition 'Dictionary of Entomology' and received a big fat refund/compensation cheque from BT (from my parent's house). My back was still painful over the weekend, but minor compared to last week. Had to finish sorting through paperwork at Holme and started the dreaded shredding process – so exciting!
I didn't get time to go birding sadly, as too many other things to sort out. Birders who have enjoyed the comfort of using my mother's cushions in the hides at Holme Marsh Reserve NWT, will be pleased to know that I have added three more comfortable cushions to hide 1 and 2! Could I kindly request that people pile up the cushions on the single chair in each hide when they have finished, rather than leaving them on the bench seat, from where they generally end up falling onto the dirty hide floor. My mother used to remove the cushions, handwash them and return them, but I'm not that dedicated!
I popped into The White Horse pub at Holme this afternoon, just to ask how the cat was doing. My sisters and I had been worried, as we had not seen the cat in mother's garden at all and this either mean't it had settled in to its new home or something more sinister! I was hugely relieved to hear from a young lad in the pub that 'Misty' has settled in well and 'rules the roost' and seems to like spending time with her brother. I had a tear in my eye as I walked out of the pub, such a relief! Thank goodness we made the right decision.
It looks incredibly bare outside mother's house after the massive buddleia cull and part of me regrets doing it, but as I said last week, somebody would have done it eventually anyway. Every time I return to the property, an immense sadness envelops me – every item we sell or take out, is another memory erased. Apart from a Robin, I didn't see a single bird in the garden today and all because there is no one there to feed them anymore – its almost haunting.
The house is probably going up for sale soon. I don't want to sell it really, but there isn't much choice. I'm the only one that could just about buy my sisters out (from selling my house), but my mortgage would be much bigger than my current one and I wouldn't have any pennies to do the house up (trust me it needs sorting!), plus I don't really want all that added pressure/financial burden at my age. Besides the fact that I don't think I could live in it emotionally – I think the sadness would continue and I can't see me ever feeling any different in that house. The biggest thing that frustrates me, is that it is highly likely that it will be sold to a second home owner and like most of the houses in the road and in fact the village, will stand empty for most of the year and lets be honest, the chances of them being naturalists are probably nil. The house will be extended and the garden will be destroyed and replaced by decking, concrete, pots and barbecue area. Any naturalists/birders/ornithologists out there, who would like to buy a two bed house (that needs alot of work doing) but has an amazing organic wildlife garden for the last fifty years, please email your interest! It will save us the estate agents fees if we sell it privately!!!

Weekend Update!
An extremely busy weekend, but alas no birding. Vivien & Ray, Lucy and myself started Saturday off with a very nice full breakfast at Tesco in Hunstanton at 8am. We then spent the entire day at our parent's house in Holme, clearing rubbish from the garden and emptying both large sheds and filling a massive skip, that Vivien had ordered and had delivered on Friday. Ray did a very good job of packing the skip – I don't think there were any gaps left at the end! Vivien and Ray stayed in a B&B in Hunstanton, in order to spend a second day at the house. We all met up for a lovely evening meal at Northgate Indian Restaurant in Hunstanton and then Lucy and I returned to King's Lynn. Slept well!
Today, Vivien, Ray and I returned to the house for round two! We burnt loads of wood that I had advertised free, but nobody bothered replying to my adverts. Richard B had already taken a massive wooden crate that the cat used to sleep in, which will now be used as an owl box (owl and the pussycat springs to mind!). Ray cut down all the massive buddleias that mother had planted in the road years ago! I had been putting off doing this, as sentimentally I didn't want them cut down at all, but they needed to go. We were not able to park in front of the house because of these, plus IF we sell the house, someone else will get rid of them anyway. I dragged all the buddleia through the garden and stacked behind the big willow tree – I lost count of how many times I dragged stuff through the garden! Vivien was fire chief! Sold my father's Bembo tripod this morning to the father of an east coast birder – nice to know its gone to a good home!
Thousands of Pink-footed Geese flying over us all afternoon which was beautiful, however four Common Buzzards circling overhead in clear blue skies were the highlight for me. Mother's local Robin has been following me around all weekend and was very happy when I topped up the bird table with seed and cleaned the bird ponds out. Vivien and Ray left around 3.30pm and I carried on clearing up from the mass buddleia cull! Gary H. turned up to collect some items I had sorted for Alison and then a bit later Sophie turned up to collect a box of goodies I had for her too, including some old bird rings I had found amongst father's nail and screw box. Tina, one of the neighbours turned up to ask how I was, which was nice of her. I continued sweeping up all the mess until after dark and then went back in the house and had a coffee and sort out in the house.
John F. phoned me to ask if I had been let out yet.... I hadn't got a clue what he was going on about! John obviously hadn't realised that I had not been in King's Lynn all day and he told me there had a been a major 'Chemical' incident in King's Lynn – see here!!! I had turned the water back on for the weekend and went outside to turn it off just before I left. The handle in the stopcock would not turn off completely, however hard I tried to turn it on and off several times – it wouldn't budge any further and I have only manged to turn it off by about 97%! Oh well! I returned home wearily to King's Lynn. Phew!

Vivien and I met up in Ely on Thursday afternoon and had lunch at a wonderful vegan cafe. The food was excellent and the setting was tranquil. No screaming children, no music, just peaceful!
Happy birthday to my youngest sister Vivien!

Lucy played in her first concert of the season with the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra today. I'm so proud of her, I really don't know how she has managed to do all her rehearsals since our mother died. She is stronger than I thought. Lucy regularly rang our mother to talk about music and finds it so difficult now she's not here – Vivien and I don't quite have the same knowledge of classical music as our mother did!

Keys Fine Art Auctioneers!
Vivien and I visted Keys Auctioneers at Aylsham this afternoon. What an exciting place! A massive site and some fascinating people work there. All staff were extremely helpful and gave us lots of interesting values on various items that belonged to our parents, including two small paintings of children playing with toys – my father believed these paintings were painted by A. H Patterson, the Great Yarmouth Naturalist, but frustratingly they are not signed. However, we were told that these paintings were not Patterson and were painted far earlier than we thought... approximately 1840!!!! They would sell for at least £100 in auction! Such a pity we don't know who the artist is though!
Keys are holding a second Ornithological and Natural History sale in February 2019 we heard, as their annual Ornithological Auction in September is so popular they decided to do two in 2019! This auction will be packed out, I'm sure!
Just to explain, I am on my third and last week of phase return and this week – I am at work all week apart from this afternoon and Thursday afternoon and next week I'm back to full time/normal hours. I spent the weekend cleaning the oven and fridge freezer up ready for selling and general work at parent's house. We still have a long way to go!
