Out Birding In Shetland At Last!

St Ninian's Isle, Shetland

SUNDAY 7th MAY

By lunchtime, I had finally unpacked and organised everything in my house! Well, everything that I need until I purchase a house here, anyway. Very pleased indeed, even though the kitchen is small, I love this little house! One of the best things is the quietness, very little noise at all, the odd car goes by and that's it. So lovely to watch the House Sparrows, Blackbirds and Starlings feeding from my living room window. I still haven't got round to searching for my cookery book boxes though. Over the last couple of days I have purchased a 4 tier shoe rack, a maple folding table and a outside mat from Home Furnishings in Lerwick – a posher version of a Wilkos type store.

Cooked brunch and then went birding for the afternoon. Had a quick look at the Burn of Sound on the outskirts of Lerwick – a lovely little spot, where I saw a Red-flanked Bluetail once, but nothing seen here at all. Interesting to be here at a different time of year, with primroses and other Spring flowers in abundance. Chatted to a lovely lady called Brenda, walking her little dog as I was getting into my car. Headed south – stopped briefly at the parking/viewing area, just south of Cunningsburgh and to my delight watched a Chiffchaff fly in off the sea and land close by briefly. Headed to Hoswick and parked up near the Orca Inn – there has been a Hoopoe here for the last few days, but not for me sadly! Lots of very cute baby lambs everywhere, skipping in the fields with their mother's protectively keeping an eye.

A message popped up on the Shetland WhatsApp group that a Hoopoe had been found at 'Noss', so I headed to Noss, which is next to Bigton. Local birders will be chuckling now, as I found out shortly afterwards – the message was for the Island of Noss!!! Oh well! Had some lovely views of a Tree Sparrow feeding on a field with House Sparrows and also three Twite, Oystercatchers, Black-headed Gulls and Hooded Crows. At Spiggie Loch a Bonxie flew over my head, which I had not expected and several Swallows skimmed low over the road, which was a fabulous sight to see! Stopped at Geosetter to see what was left of a list of birds seen earlier by a local birder – saw a female Blackcap and a possible Pied Flycatcher, which flitted so quickly, I couldn't nail it down, frustratingly.

Ended the day at one of the most picturesque places in Shetland – St Ninian's Isle. It felt colder now and had to put my serious hat on. It was breathtaking to be here, it really was. Not a single person in sight. If this was Norfolk, it would have been teaming with people and dogs. I didn't even see another footprint in the sand along the tombola! I had such a wonderful time here by myself. Watched a pair of Ringed Plovers, a pair of Eider, 3 Common Terns fishing on either side of the Tombola, a raft of Long-tailed Ducks, more Eider, a Great Northern Diver close inshore, several Turnstone feeding, Fulmars and gulls were cruising in the wind. It was chilly and it felt fantastic! Gusting white sands created fascinating sand sculptures (see picture). The turquoise sea was so beautiful. I felt like I belonged here. I feel I should have moved here years ago.

Back at the car, I had coffee and Sandwick Bakery Ginger cake – what more do you need to complete your life? Nothing, nothing at all! Drove the 14 miles back to Lerwick in misty weather, which required me to put my fog lights on. Had a healthy salad and cheese tea with local oatcakes, followed by another piece of ginger cake, whilst watching the second half of the Coronation concert. A spectacular first birding trip indeed. Tomorrow I have to turn up four pairs of work trousers, for my new job as Occupational Therapy Assistant at The Gilbert Bain Hospital, which commences on Tuesday!

Getting The House In Order!

THURSDAY 4th MAY

It was truly wicked to be indoors today, the skies were blue and the sun shone all day, but I had to tackle unpacking kitchen stuff and arranging things, so that I can operate on a daily basis. I managed to find a place for everything, but there was no space for my Ninja Food Processor, so left it upstairs with all my other stuff. I can't find my Ninja cook booklets or my newly washed dusters?! This took the entire day to complete. Washed the kitchen and bathroom floor and sorted out two washing up bowls for the recycling – one for tins and plastic and the other for card and paper. I kept all the unpacked boxes and newspapers, I'm not collecting them again, when I purchase a house here!

Lovely to see a Blackbird bathing in my concrete bird bath! The House Sparrows and Starlings have discovered the bird seed and its all looking busy under the huge honeysuckle hedge – I say hedge, as its too big for a bush! Sadly there is some rubbish under the honeysuckle, which I intend to clear.

My P45 and last QEH wage packet arrived today and I won £75 on the Premium Bonds! Chatted to Vivien and Ray via WhatsApp Video and with Lucy on the phone. The TalkTalk saga continued and you couldn't make up what happened this morning – an engineer phoned and said "I believe am coming out to look at your internet issues?" "Yes" I said, "I presume you are in Shetland?" "No, I'm in Norfolk" 😂 – the engineer had been instructed to go to my old address!!! The address that ceased to operate with TalkTalk on the 30th April!!! Long story short...... TalkTalk sent me an apology text and will credit me with £29.15 for the inconvenience of waiting in for an engineer, who never turned up and in any case, its all working now!

An Exhausting Day, with Internet Issues etc!

Today, I did very little. I felt completely exhausted.

Some of the hospital Estates team kindly came over this morning to wire in my electric cooker, plumb in my washing machine and look at other things that were not working, including the towel rail, extractor fan, a storage heater and windows that didn't open/close and also to investigate the front door lock. They also sorted out the TV aerial lead for me, which was very kind of them to do. I also asked about coat hooks, as oddly there are none at all in the very large hallway – I will probably just get them myself, as not something I feel I can do without – wet coats etc.

Several tedious phone calls to TalkTalk, who finally said they would send an engineer out between 9am and 12pm tomorrow – this was decided at around 6.30pm. Around an hour later the internet went live, so I texted them to say I didn't need the engineer now and they messaged back to say that they were going to charge me £75 for cancelling, as I needed to give them 24 hours notice to cancel – they are having a laugh with me of course!!!! How could I possible give them 24 hours notice when it was only booked at 6.30pm!!! I won't let that one rest, something else to sort out!

The only things I managed to get done today were, walking to the hospital and meeting lovely Arlene who assisted me to get fitted up for my new uniforms next week. Unlike the QEH in King's Lynn, they have stock of all uniforms in house! So was sent away with four sets of navy trousers and mid blue tunics with navy piping and washed these twice in the machine (as recommended). The only issue being, the trousers are unisex and are very long – you have to turn them up yourself and I don't have a sewing machine, so will need to buy navy cotton and get stitching the weekend! Did a shopping list.

Went to Fort Cafe & Take Away in Lerwick, bought fish and chips and drove to the quayside just past Tesco to enjoy my tea overlooking the harbour, with greedy herring gulls waiting for chips. Did a huge shop in Tesco's to fill the empty fridge freezer and returned home. Lost my parking spot opposite the house. Had to walk down the 12 steps to the house, left the shopping by the front door (that doesn't unlock) and then walk around to the back of the house and up a short flight of steps to back door – walked through house to unlock front door, to retrieve shopping! I still can't believe I am here!

End of day two!

Aberdeen to Lerwick! My Final Destination!

TUESDAY 2nd MAY

Had a fantastic sleep and didn't want to get up when my alarm went off at 5.50am. Was packed up and in the restaurant for a fabulous breakfast at 6.30am. Photographed Fair Isle as we cruised into Lerwick Harbour – a fabulous sight indeed! Arrived at 7.25am.

Fair Isle from my breakfast table!

Arriving at Lerwick Harbour – 7.25am
Kindly photographed by Jill Wilson!

Jill and Rob Wilson (who moved here from Norfolk, just over a year ago), very sweetly met me to say hello at the ferry terminal – I was very touched by this, so kind! Thank you both so much for driving all that way from your home to meet me! Jill and Rob also stayed with me for a while and escorted me to my new rented NHS house. Then Jill joined me on a very short walk to the hospital reception to pick up my house keys. We returned to the house, to find that none of the three yale keys fitted the front door! However, one of the keys did get us in the back door.

It was generally a more spacious house than I had thought (from videos previously sent to me), although the kitchen is far smaller than mine was in King's Lynn. I have a huge honeysuckle bush, filling my entire view from my living room window and there was a Blackbird and a House Sparrow in the garden.

Jill and Rob headed home (read their Shetland blog here). The biggest issue today, was going to be parking up in this narrow little street for Ian Reid's Removal lorry, which was arriving at 10am. A short while later, the car that parked up behind my car had left and I realised that once I moved my car, there would be just enough room for the lorry to park up, so I didn't dare leave the street, in case someone else tried to park there. The lorry arrived at 9.45am and I moved my car – they just squeezed in between the parked cars, very lucky indeed! It took them until around 1.30pm to unload the lorry.

It felt surreal, being here. Knowing I have actually moved here, is so exciting! Its taken a tremendous amount of hard work to get myself here, an insane amount of throwing, selling, charity shop drops, auctioneers and trips to the dump and now it has all paid off. I'm here in Shetland!!!

Ian Reid's team did a fantastic job getting me here and offloaded all my boxes where I requested, nothing was too much trouble, very kind and professional. After they left, the first thing I did was collapse on my sofa for a short while. Now, instead of being sensible and putting my bed together or starting in the kitchen, I decided to do the least important thing! I arranged all my plant pots under my living room window and opposite here, on the other side of the footpath underneath and next to the huge honeysuckle. With the heavy concrete bird pond in place and a few of my garden ornaments, it looked prettier than it did in my old garden! I also met some of my lovely NHS neighbours, who live in the same block of houses as me, including a couple of very sweet looking toddlers, who were intrigued by my garden ornaments. The garden is communal, between the four houses, but only three of us here at the moment.

My TalkTalk Internet service was supposed to go live today – surprise, surprise it didn't! Several phone calls later, I was assured it would be on by the evening...... it wasn't.

I also managed to unpack and arrange the living room in the afternoon to make it look as nice as possible. Stood all my lovely leaving cards from sisters, friends and work colleagues, up on the coffee table. Unboxed some Shetland and Fair Isle books and placed in my parent's wedding present black bookcase and its all looking very homely indeed. Later on, I was so tired, that I slept under a blanket on top of the mattress!

Dunbar to Aberdeen!

View from my B&B in Dunbar this morning

Lovely breakfast at my B&B, beautiful sunny morning. Heading to Aberdeen shortly for 7pm ferry, where I need to fill up with petrol to the brim, as a lovely birder on Twitter informed me there is a shortage of petrol on Shetland right now, don't know what is going on there?!

Due to chronic fatigue from sea sickness tablets the last time in October 2021, I will not be taking them to the last minute (should have taken them last night), so will probably be feeling sick later on! Oh well!

The bird news may be late again and bare in mind my TalkTalk Internet may not go live on 2nd May when I arrive, fingers crossed.

Left Dunbar at just after 11am and with rest stops, arrived at Aberdeen at 3.35pm. Filled up with petrol and made my way to the ferry terminal. In the queue, Shetland birder Andrew Harrop kindly introduced himself. Because I was amongst the earliest arrivals, I was on the lower deck of the ferry, which meant there were were even more stairs to climb with luggage than normal!

Had a fabulous fish 'n' chip tea with Black Forest Gateux and a cup of tea. Retired to my cabin straight away, quick shower and was asleep by early evening! The calmest ferry crossing I've ever encountered!

HUGE THANKS TO ALL MESSAGES RECEIVED VIA SOCIAL MEDIA AND TEXTS ETC. APOLOGIES I HAVE NOT HAD TIME TO REPLY PERSONALLY YET!

Departing Norfolk & Heading North!

SUNDAY 30th APRIL

In brief, today's schedule was abolished! It took far longer to complete my house, with cleaning, last of sorting and making sure the house was left in a state that I would want to see as a buyer.

Got the car washed at Tesco Hardwick, an hour and a half wait! I decided that whatever time I left today, the main objective was to catch the ferry on Monday evening. Went to get a roast lunch in Dobbies and had an argument with a very rude lady serving, who would not sell me roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding with the veggie quiche, so I walked out! Got some boring sandwiches from Tescos and Red Bull (seem to be drinking far too much of this) and a couple of egg custard tarts. Bumped into Hilary!!!!! Another final lovely hug with one of my favourite people! Sat outside on a bench having lunch.

Collected shiny new car and headed for home. More sorting at home, took some videos of house. Read all metres, turned off heating, electric etc. Packed the car like a jigsaw, lucky it all fitted in. Gave Roger and Georgie (neighbours some goodies I couldn't take). Finally left at 6pm (when I had planned to arrive at my B&B in Dunbar). Visited Lucy for the last time with card, flowers and cake and then dropped my keys in estate agents door.

Then, fun and games commenced. Someone didn't want me to go north obviously! Turned on the car ignition "key fob battery needs changing". Fine, I was caught out with this once before, so no issue. Searched for 'new Duracell '2025' batteries in back of car – put in, didn't work, same message – I did this three bl**dy times! Stressed now was an understatement. Long story short, my local Londis shop in Wootton Road saved the day with 'new' batteries. Car working, left King's Lynn at 6.45pm and arrived at B&B in Dunbar at 1.10am!!!
