Thanks to the RBA team for including my Thrush Nightingale and Red-flanked Bluetail photos on Shetland this week – still can't believe I'm here! I'm having a wonderful time and with some fabulous other birders – so exciting, I might not come back to Norfolk!!!

SHETLAND HOLIDAY, Day Three!
TOUR WITH ORIOLE BIRDING
FIRST DAY'S BIRDING ON SHETLAND!
The sleeping pod on the ferry was abandoned at 12.45am in favour of a sofa in the lounge area! It was a beautiful looking chair which reclined to a certain degree, but I just had to lay flat! I noticed several other people had to do the same. It was a very smooth crossing, which I didn't expect in October – very lucky indeed!
We all met for breakfast at 6.30am and the ferry arrived in early as light broke. We met up with Jason Moss in the car park who now joined our tour for the rest of the Shetland holiday.
A Raven greeted us at the ferry terminal before we made our way to the west mainland in search of migrants. Birds seen on route: Hooded Crows, large numbers of Lapwings, Redshanks, Golden Plovers, Turnstones. The weather was atrocious, with strong winds and heavy rain downpours and it looked set for the day. But, we were very lucky indeed and surprisingly the weather improved dramatically to a lovely sunny afternoon!
We searched scrub and plantations in the Dale of Walls area in the rain, where we found a Spotted Flycatcher, Snipe, Chiffchaff, Robin, Goldcrest, Wren, Hooded Crow and a Raven. Several areas of scrub we searched looked potentially exciting. After picking up lunch supplies we headed on a long journey north to 'North Roe' to look for the Red-flanked Bluetail that has been around for the last few days. This is when the weather changed for the better! We had almost given up on the RFB, when Jason found the bluetail skulking around in a small area of honeysuckle, much to our delight. We spent quite a bit of time here with this cracking little bird and later it showed so close, we couldn't focus on it with our cameras! This was the closest views of a Red-flanked Bluetail I have ever seen and all in beautiful sunshine! There was also a Brambling feeding + two more flew over and a Blackcap also showed briefly.
We searched a large area of scrub/garden close by, which produced a Chiffchaff and a Goldcrest – another exciting area with huge potential and the imagination ran riot with Hermit Thrushes, Black-and-White Warblers, Subalpine Warblers and so on! This garden must have been designed by a birder – there were paths, clearings, bridges over cascading burns, seats in just the rest places and plants, shrubs and trees to attract all birds!!!
Our last stop of the day was to see the Parrot Crossbills at Helendale in Lerwick. We had lovely views of these gregarious birds, but the stunning male did not want to pose for photos and tended to be in the darkest areas of the pine tree. Fascinating to watch these cracking birds, who would take a pine cone and then take it to the darkest area, by the trunk of the pine tree to eat it.
We continued south to Sumburgh. At the gates of the Sumburgh House Hotel where we are staying for the next few days, Ashley pointed out a cracking male Redstart, perched on the fence wire. A superb first day! A wonderful evening meal was enjoyed by all. Early start in the morning! I have just discovered this evening, that I can not send any emails again – I give up!!!

This little spot looked mega rare! Burn at Dale of Walls

Returning south, we found a Twite, Brambling and Redwings on route to our hotel. We then arrived at Sandgarth to look for the Thrush Nightingale and I bumped into Jacquie and Dave Bridges (Norfolk bird recorders) – it was lovely to see them and Jacquie told us the exact spot to see the Thrush Nightingale. We could not believe our luck, when arriving at the viewing point, the bird appeared within seconds on a grassy path for us all to enjoy. I have never seen a Thrush Nightingale behave this way! They are normally incredibly elusive – this was absolute magic!

SHETLAND HOLIDAY, Day Two!
TOUR WITH ORIOLE BIRDING
MONDAY 9th OCTOBER
MAINLAND BIRDING & ABERDEEN FERRY!
I slept like a log last night, must have been the glass of wine I had! We met up for breakfast at 8am, although I was a little late due to a shower issue! We left at 9am to head north to Dundee to pick up Lyn and John. After leaving Dundee we headed to Aberdeen and beyond to get some birding in before the 7pm ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland.
We started off at the 'Ythan Estuary’ where we arrived at 2.45pm. We had a wonderful selection of birds here including Golden Plovers, Red-breasted Mergansers, loads of Eiders, Redshanks, Cormorants, Oystercatchers, Ruff, Bar-tailed Godwit, 20+ Curlews, Heron, Wigeon and Dunlins. On a feeder in someone’s garden we watched Goldfinches and House Sparrows.
We then visited ‘Forvie National Nature Reserve’ where we saw Black-tailed Godwits x 10, loads of Lapwings, Oystercatchers, a Blackbird, Common Buzzard, Curlews, Goldcrests, Redwings x 3 overhead, Robins, Magpies, Woodpigeon and Pheasant. From the hide we had stunning views in the setting sun of 11 Whooper Swans, a Skylark, Shelducks x 2, Golden Eye x 3 and Greylag Geese. The light here was stunning.
We then re-located to ‘Black Dog’ we saw 86+ Eiders on the sea, a Pom Skua juv. was being harassed by a Kittiwake and a small number of Common Scoters were seen. Bird of the day for me was a Lesser Whitethroat which popped out of a bush along with 2 Tree Sparrows, a Robin, Wren and Blackbird. This area looked really good for migrants, with lots of low cover and bushes amongst the dunes. A few starlings were perched on the telegraph wires a few yards away from us – it was a beautiful spot.
We arrived at the ferry terminal around 5.15pm and boarded about 5.40pm. We immediately climbed up the outer deck to see if you could see any birds when the ferry left the harbour, but the light very quickly faded before we even left. But, we did see a Peregrine speeding over the harbour and landed on a railing on the building with a big clock face.
The other guests all have a cabin, but mine was a late booking so I have one of the new 'Sleeping Pods'. They didn’t have these last time I came in 2010, so it will be interesting to see how comfortable they are compared to either the recliner seats of the floor!
We all had a lovely meal in the restaurant and I had my usual scrumptious fish ’n’ chips with a yummy cheesecake to follow – all good for the waistline! We then located to the bar area, where I attempted to get onto the internet and failed miserably! So will have to post both this and the Norfolk bird news up late, sorry! Had a glass of wine to hopefully guarantee another good night’s sleep! Good night.

SHETLAND HOLIDAY, Day One!
TOUR WITH ORIOLE BIRDING
DEPARTURE!
Ashley Saunders, along with Nick, John and Ian picked me up at 2.45pm to leave for our journey to Carlisle, where we stayed in a Premier Inn overnight. Fabulous meal in the evening and it was lovely getting to know everyone – looks like we are going to have some good banter! I was so exhausted from packing overnight and could'n't keep awake any longer, so I left the men to talk football and returned to my room. Started to type the blog, but even too tired to do that. Tomorrow we are picking up another John and his wife Evelyn in Dundee, before we fit some birding in and then head to Abderdeen for the ferry in the evening.

Spring Cleaning, Packing, Visiting, Shopping!
My house has never looked so tidy – I have been cleaning all day. I had a major sort out and filled black and green bins. I have 10 huge bags for Shetland (only joking Ashley!😉). Emails now working, thanks to John Furse and Eddie Myers for clarifying that sent emails are in fact sending!
Went to Sainsburys and then visited mother for a short while this evening and delivered newspapers, biscuits, chocolate and bread. The cat was skittish and was flying round the house – possibly due to the full moon!?
I'm so excited – I don't think I will sleep tonight!!! Excited about going away, seeing new places, new birds, wearing my new wellies, new boots, meeting new people, someone else cooking for me, having a little tipple and finding a male Siberian Rubythroat!!!

First Holiday Away For Seven Years!
I seemed to have sorted my emails this morning, so hope the tests I have sent to friends have been received!
My last holiday away from Norfolk was Fair Isle in 2010! I am so incredibly excited to be travelling with Oriole Birding for my first expedition on Shetland – its still hasn't sunk in! One day to go, so better get packing!
I will be taking my new laptop with me, so will still be updating the bird news daily, but the internet on Unst is apparently non-existent, so you may have delayed bird news whilst I'm on Unst. If anyone out there fancies helping me out with this please, that would be fabulous! If someone would like to type up the bird news for the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th October and email it to me, so I can just add it when I arrive back at Sumburgh Head on evening of 17th (internet back again in full), that would be awesome!😃

Crazy Week!
I have had TONS of things to do this week! I have given up trying to make my Adobe Photoshop CS5 work on my new iMac and Macbook Pro laptop! So I have purchased the Adobe Creative Cloud package, which includes the latest Photoshop and Lightroom which is a monthly fee of £9.98. Not got the time to learn Lightroom before I leave for my holiday, but was pleased to find the basics that I normally use in the new Photoshop – very excited about exploring these programmes in full when I return to Norfolk.
I eventually managed to copy all my Time Machine copy onto my iMac, so currently I have both iMac and laptop running, internet working, Photoshop on both and emails arriving in my 'In Box', but I can not send a single email out!!! Tried ringing TalkTalk early this evening, but they were not able to help me, as updating all their servers and asked me to ring back tomorrow at 8am. Its rather odd, as I can send emails via my iphone, so must be something to do with the settings on the new devices.
Last night I chipped off a third of a tooth along with a filling, whilst enjoying a butter mint sweet on the way into town after work – as Hilary said at work today 'older people should not even touch hard boiled sweets'!!! Assuming that I'm in the 'older people' category, I agree with her! I was very, very lucky and managed to get an appointment for 2pm and with my favourite dentist! That sweet cost me £56.30!!! The dentist very kindly de-scaled my teeth, had a general check and smoothed out another tiny chip I did a few months back.
Parcels have been arriving non stop this week: socks, new mouse mat etc! I also purchased another Magic Mouse 2, so I can use this for the laptop at the same time as the iMac – you can not use one mouse for two devices, I discovered!
Loads of other stuff has gone on, but been so busy I can't remember what else has happened. I have never been less ready for a holiday. I have not done a list or anything yet – ironing to do tomorrow, packing, organise camera bag etc. Also need to go and visit Mother before I leave. She is infuriatingly attempting to finish clearing her pond, which I started and Vivien's partner Ray has also cleared some – she told me this evening that she got stuck in the sludge/mud today and had to use all her strength to crawl out!!! She does make me angry at times – she seems determine to annoy me, just before I go on holiday! Its role reversal when you get older, the parents act like naughty children!
Anyway, time to retire – desperate for eight hours sleep – good night!
BAD NEWS & EXCITING NEWS!!!
On Saturday I spent most of the day in the Apple Store in the Grand Arcade, Cambridge. I caught a very early train and was waiting on seats outside the store by 8am. I had my Macbook Pro 15" laptop with me, a couple of external hard drives and all the leads etc. It killed me to get there at that time, but I had to be there when the shop opened at 9am.
I sat at the Genius Bar (the technical desk) from 9am until 1pm! A technician eventually managed to open my mac via his mac, but the news was gloomy – the hard drive had failed. My heart sank, I have had this laptop since 2010 and it still looks brand new – there's not a mark on it. I have been told that 7 years is a long time for a laptop to last, I was hoping it was going to last double that amount of time! The technician plugged in my external hard drive to find that my last Time Machine back-up was on the 26th July, so it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be – I was really worried, as I couldn't remember how many months ago I had backed up. So I have lost all work since that date, including iphone, SLR pictures, documents, adverts I have designed etc. Big fat note to self: BACK UP WEEKLY!
I had lost the will to live by lunchtime, but chatted with an Apple Sales man and wrote down all my options and prices. Left the store and went for lunch, which I had brought with me – I then went to a coffee shop where I sat upstairs in a very chilled room with comfy sofas to relax for a while and think about what I should do, not do and what I was about to do!
Returned to the Apple Store at 4.30pm – the shop was packed out with bodies! It was a job to even move in the store! I had to register to be seen by a sales rep and had to wait until about 5.30pm to see someone (they close at 6pm). A lady then came across and took my order: Apple iMac 21.5" and a MacBook Pro 13" laptop and case, a USB SuperDrive (for DVD's), and 2 USB-C to USB Adaptors (the USB ports in all newer Apples are now smaller (a USB-C), so you have to buy an adaptor in order to plug in your other equipment (with old USB port leads) eg, printer, scanner, card reader etc. I felt sick and excited at the same time! Sick because of the cost, excited because I have always wanted an iMac so I can see everything on a bigger scale – the 27" iMac is far too big and in your face, didn't want this. The 13" MacBook Pro is tons lighter than my old laptop and I wanted this to travel with. It took me ages to get everything into my big rucksack, but then obviously had to carry the iMac with handle on box to the bus station, caught bus to train station, sat on packed train and then walked from King's Lynn station in light rain to my car which was parked at Lucy's. Shattered, but managed to get to bed by 10.30pm – early for me!
Sunday – I worked all day and on returning home, started to have a big tidy up. Got new iMac and laptop out of boxes and started to set up simultaneously. It all started off quite smoothy – I am connected to the internet on both, but not much more has been achieved. I managed to copy over the last Time Machine back-up, but this has only been achieved on the laptop, it hasn't worked on the iMac! As I fully expected, I have no emails coming into my inbox – no surprise there with TalkTalk!!! I have no emails addresses, no old emails to refer back to anything, no Firefox synced tabs, no bookmarks, no Adobe Photoshop and none of my documents have saved!!! I will have to spend Monday evening chatting to an Apple Technician on the phone!
All this going on, with only days left before I go to Shetland! Hairdressers on Tuesday evening and so much to do before I go away. I need to set up the laptop with everything I need, as its going on holiday with me!
