Use of Nets to Stop Sand Martins Nesting on Cliffs at Bacton Prompts Council Criticism

TRULY HEARTBREAKING!!!

What a heart wrenching video to watch!
IT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN DOWN NOW!!!
The work should have been done OUT of breeding season, why now?!

UPDATE 10th APRIL
https://www.rspb.org.uk/bacton

So, I understand and respect that the cliffs are eroding and homes and the gas terminal are at risk, BUT, why did this 'Sandscaping' work not get done last Autumn or in the Winter months when the Sand Martins were in Africa? It would have been much more appropriate to deposit these large amounts of sand in the Winter, which would have then filled in/covered up all the existing lower Sand Martin burrows. Had this been done, then the recently returned Sand Martins wouldn't have homed in on their previously used burrows at the lower levels and would naturally have looked elsewhere to nest. This would have left all the hundreds of burrows at the higher levels intact and ready for returning Sand Martins. To cover the cliff face with dangerous netting from top to bottom for 1km and just before the Sand Martins returned, was completely unnecessary and downright CRUEL! The torture of seeing the Sand Martins trying to access their burrows through the netting is soul destroying to say the least. These birds are not going to look elsewhere to nest, when they can see their burrows through the netting!!! Leaving this work until now, has cost the council far more money, paying a contractor to put this dangerous and inappropriate netting up and now having to pay someone again to take it down, when they could have carried out the entire project in Autumn/Winter 2018, long before the Sand Martins flew thousands of miles from Africa to their nesting site at Bacton. Its completely and utterly heartbreaking.

Torturing these returning migrants from accessing their burrows to nest and putting wildlife at risk of getting trapped, surely must be illegal?!!! Truly wicked!

I see on the latest RSPB update above that there will be more talks – less talking, MORE ACTION please North Norfolk District Council! Every minute this netting remains, is another minute of stress for these exhausted and confused Sand Martins.
