Clickimin Loch & Westerwick Cliffs!

Westerwick Cliffs

Ambled around Clickimin Loch in Lerwick to see if the Spotted Redshank was still around that Andy Johnson had found this morning, no sign – they are quite scarce here. Chatted to Dennis Coutts for a while and then walked north along the loch. 2 Blackbirds, some House Sparrows, Hooded Crows and sheep feeding amongst the stunning purple heather clad hills, adjacent to Anderson High School.

Went for a scenic drive to Westerwick Cliffs – my first visit here. Stopped at Reawick beach for a while – the sand here is red. Saw a Red-throated Diver on the sea, nothing else of note. What I would give to live in the little white house that overlooks the beach here! Drove through Skeld, where there is a marina and a picturesque white church surrounded by purple heather. Curlews, Oystercatchers, Wheatears and Meadows Pipits seen throughout my drive. Drove through Wester Skeld and then onto Westerwick, where I parked up in a small turning and parking area.

Walked over a stile and then headed up to the right and followed the fence line along the cliff top and over several more stiles. The view of the sea and stacks here were incredible. It was mid evening and even at this time, the sea below was clear turquoise. I really must come back on a sunny day. This is not somewhere to walk in windy weather though! Fulmars, Black Guillemot, gulls and one seal seen here. The walk back down the cliff edge, was much more enjoyable! Saw some Greylag Geese on route home to Lerwick.
