Rose-coloured Starling
West Burra, Shetland
West Burra, Shetland
This gregarious Rose-coloured Starling has been at West Burra since Friday and I decided to go and see it after work this evening. I met and chatted with the lovely couple who own the house with pink dish feeder, where this fabulous bird has taken up temporary residence. This RCS is a fiesty character! Every time a starling came anywhere near the food dish, it attacked quickly and successfully.
Valerie (lady of the house) said she had been "looking up on-line" to see what Rose-coloured Starlings ate and had been going out to buy different fruits etc for her colourful guest! This could turn out to be a long staying plump bird!!! Lots of Common Starlings sitting on the wires close by, watching for an opportunity to get to the pink dish, but they had no chance whatsoever!
Had a quick walk to overlook Banna Minn Beach, but decided it was too late to walk down to the beach and beyond – this is a vast area. Left here and on the way back, parked up for Meal Beach – which is far quicker to walk to. Meal Beach always looks magnificent, even in dull, late evening light – such a stunning spot. No birds of note here in the fading light, but two Seals bobbing up and down in the crystal turquoise waves. Seeing the cracking Rose-coloured Starling, made up for my rubbish weekend!
Lovely to meet you Penny, and great photos of our pink friend! X
