Spring Birding at Holme Bird Observatory!
PIED FLYCATCHER
This evening at Holme Bird Observatory
After being at work all day, I was shattered, but simply couldn't miss out on seeing Pied Flycatchers at Holme Bird Observatory. You don't see stonking male Pied Flycatchers very often to be honest, well I don't anyway! I had dinner on route to Holme: a spicy bean pastie! As I drove along the Firs Road, I could feel the excitement of newly arrived migrants. Four Wheatears were yards from the road and showing very nicely indeed, also a few Robins, a Chiffchaff and a male Blackcap in a bush, as I approached the end of the road. A Chiffchaff and a Robin were in the sea buckthorn opposite the NOA car park.
At Holme Bird Observatory, I watched Male & Fem. Pied Flycatchers sitting on the fence posts and rope and posing in the pink tamarisk! A Black Redstart was feeding on the grassy slope just east of the observatory along with 2 Wheatears. 2 Swallows flew over. Also saw a few Chiffchaffs & Robins around the reserve!!! 6 fabulous Ring Ouzels (at least 3 males) appeared along with 2 Fieldfares, just south of the Firs Road, behind the Natterjack pond, as I left + 1 Song Thrush singing!!! Also four Wheatears in paddocks along the Firs Road. Checked the family home at Holme and watered some plants and then made my way home to King's Lynn.
One of the best birding trips after work, that I've had for a very long time! Its going to be an amazing weekend for birding and weather, which will also mean a ton of traffic on the roads! I'm secretly hoping that Holme reserve car parks will be packed out with birders and not day trippers and dogs for the beach, wouldn't that be awesome?! See you all tomorrow!!!

Ringstead Downs NWT!
I went in search of Ring Ouzels after work this evening – two were reported yesterday, so felt I was in with a good chance. Ringstead Downs is an excellent spot to find Ring Ouzels and I have seen them here many times throughout the years, since childhood. There are Belgian Blue Cattle grazing here, so if you bring a dog, it must be on a lead at all times. I was extremely impressed with the total lack of dog excrement here – I didn't see any at all, not even in the picnic area! Obviously all the dog owners here are responsible and caring.
It was a beautiful evening walk and I had a nice selection of birds, but sadly no Ring Ouzels. I had a cracking view of a Common Buzzard sitting in a tree close to the path, which a Blackbird was mobbing – it had presumed I hadn't seen it, but when I got the camera out and managed to get an out of focus shot, it flew off! Other birds seen: Chiffchaffs, Blackcap (singing), Goldcrests, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Robins, Blackbirds, Hedge Sparrows, Chaffinches, 3 Mistle Thrushes, Red-legged Partridges, Rooks, Jackdaws, Starlings, and a Kestrel hovering.
There is a beautiful display of cowslips in the picnic area. I might visit this tranquil site at dawn one morning over the Easter break, should be in with better chance of seeing Ring Ouzels early morning, well hopefully anyway.

Holme Reserves!
I have such a good selection of birds in my garden, I don't really need to leave King's Lynn! Song Thrush this morning along with my very tame female Blackbird, male Blackbird, lots of Starlings, Goldfinches feeding on the niger seed, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Robins, Hedge Sparrows, Collared Doves and a Wren making a nest.
Spent the day at Holme Reserves. North east winds, chilly but a beautiful sunny day. Cetti's Warbler singing by the 5-bar gate along The Firs road. Searched for the Ring Ouzels on the NWT Forestry and along the path to the wader pools, no luck at all. Didn't see any hirundines at all whilst out today. Didn't see any Wheatears or Stonechats either, in fact I saw very little indeed. The last hide along the wader pools produced several mating Black-headed Gulls, a Redshank, Avocets, Shelducks, Shovelers and lots of Brent Geese and Greylag Geese.
Lots of Avocets on the Broad Water. I had a lovely time sitting in the exact spot where my father used to sit, on the seat under the observatory window – no one else here, solitude. It was beautifully warm here, I closed my eyes and memories raced through my mind of happy days spent here since childhood. Half an hour later, I ambled back to the car. Saw a few Goldfinches and Linnets, nothing else of note.
Went to the family home and read the electric meter for the quarterly bill – oh dear! Cleaned all the bird ponds out and re-filled and watered all the plants in pots. I was hoping that Vivien and I wouldn't have to do any gardening before the house is sold, looks like we will be, being as we havn't had any satisfactory offers yet – we will wait patiently for the right offer!
Went to Holme Marsh Reserve NWT late evening. Nice walk, but no birds of note at all. Drove back via Hunstanton and saw a drake Mandarin Duck (as reported on Facebook by R.S) with Mallards on the grassy area (The Spinney) next to the bus station – bird of the day! I'm at work tomorrow.
Spent the day at Holme Reserves. North east winds, chilly but a beautiful sunny day. Cetti's Warbler singing by the 5-bar gate along The Firs road. Searched for the Ring Ouzels on the NWT Forestry and along the path to the wader pools, no luck at all. Didn't see any hirundines at all whilst out today. Didn't see any Wheatears or Stonechats either, in fact I saw very little indeed. The last hide along the wader pools produced several mating Black-headed Gulls, a Redshank, Avocets, Shelducks, Shovelers and lots of Brent Geese and Greylag Geese.
