Unsprung!

Getting excited now!!!

Tomorrow I'm in the audience on 'Unsprung' at 9pm. Press the Red Button on your remote after Springwatch finishes at 9pm or Channel 301. Look out for a Union Jack flag surrounded by birds on front of my top and my blog address underneath! OR if because of 'advertising' I may have to wear my 'BIRDING The Reason I Get Out of Bed' top!!!

I have been sent a schedule for the evening, getting nervous now! With work tomorrow, its going to be a very long day! Takes two hours to drive to Minsmere RSPB, crazy, but should be fun!

Sunshine, Dining Out, Dragons & Damsels!

Bayfield Lake

I had promised my sister Lucy that I would take her out for the day in my holiday – I had left it until the last day! It was a spectacular day and the wind had died down, but there was still a bit of a breeze, which was just right. No good for birds, but for everything else it was beautiful. Lucy can't walk very far (long story), so I have to think of pretty places for her to enjoy, which don't involve walking at all really!

We started the day at Sculthorpe Mill and sat on the picnic bench enjoying the stunning scenery. Lucy loved it here and it was she who spotted the Grey Wagtails first. We also watched a Wren, Chaffinches and Goldfinches.

Parked up at Natural Surroundings at Glandford so I could show Lucy the fantastic Gunnera plants which line the entrance track and went into the shop where Lucy bought a few items.

Stopped at Glandford Ford and watched a Mute Swan swimming under the footbridge, a Mallard and 2 Black-headed Gulls. Also saw a Whitethroat and 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers flying over. A Sedge Warbler was also singing. Left here and stopped at the Cley Deli where Lucy was very impressed with the fabulous cake selection – we bought some Ginger & Pear Cake!

We had a lovely time, sitting at a picnic table on the new veranda at Cley NWT Visitor Centre, enjoying a lovely jacket potato lunch in the glorious sunshine. I just needed a bee-eater to fly over and all would be perfect! I could see several birds on the NWT pools/scrapes from here, including 2 Little Egrets. Showed Lucy the new wildlife and eduction centre and then left.

We sat at Coastguards to have an after lunch nap, but Lucy didn't seem able to nap, which mean't I couldn't either! Vivien texted to say she was a Holme with parents. We left to return to Natural Surroundings at Glandford after Eddie M. kindly texted me about several things he had seen there. Lucy and I walked from the car park to Bayfield Lake and I'm so glad we did, it was stunning here. Tons and tons of damselflies skimming over the lake and also saw a Four-spotted Chaser Dragonfly. Bumped into Steve and Sue G. and had a lovely chat with them before heading to Holme.

Spent the rest of the day with all the family and enjoyed the Ginger & Pear Cake from Cley Deli! Tried to get Father to go outside in the sunshine, but he didn't seem to want to, such a shame, he's not been out of the house for months now. Vivien is off to Cornwall for a week's holiday tomorrow. My holiday now ends! Back to work in the morning!

Garden Drove, Blakeney, Salthouse & Cley!

My intention was to walk Blakeney Point, but it was really windy and sunny and I decided I would waste my energy for very little return. Instead I opted for a pretty lazy day!

I started off at the West Track at Warham, also known as Garden Drove. Parked up on the concrete pad and headed off down the tree lined track. It was seriously overgrown here, which made it difficult to walk along. The recent fallen tree that had blocked the path had been removed and piled up on the side of the track, so this was something, but it needed a serious trim all the way along. I found very little, only a party of inquisitive Long-tailed Tits, a Chaffinch, Wren, Tortoiseshell Butterfly, a Speckled Wood and some bees. Hacked my way through the jungle of undergrowth at the end of the copse and found nothing at all apart from Woodpigeons. A couple of Little Egrets were out on the marsh towards East Hills. Trudged back to the car and then walked east to the barn and hoped for something exciting in the elder bushes by the derilict wall, but nothing. Walked back and had a coffee before heading east.

Stopped at the pull-in by Friary Hills at Blakeney and thought about walking through the marsh and also thought about walking Friary Hills, but didn't bother with either! It was hot, windy and there was no bird action really and I felt tired today and also there were too many people about. A couple of Marsh Harriers cruised round the marshes, a Little Egret was in the pool and a few Greenfinches were sitting in the elder bushes and Jackdaws were in the field.

Drove to Walsey Hills NOA where I had a job to park. I walked all round the reserve and up and over the top, found a few butterflies: Speckled Wood, Tortoiseshell and Peacock Butterfly, but no birds of note. Bumped into John F. and David B. and had a very crazy conversation, that's all I will say! Pete S. then appeared along the path and we all chatted for a while before heading off in different directions. John left and I went up the steps to see if any lizards were basking in the sunshine. Suddenly I heard John bellow from the carpark 'ARNOLDS... quick!' He then repeated again... 'ARNOLD'S'. Heart beating fast, thinking there was a mega within my sight, I ran down those steps and David wasn't far behind me. John had seen 30+ birders all scoping Arnold's marsh along the East Bank and understandably thought they had a got a major bird. I had already seen this large party of birders earlier, walking along the shingle west of the East Bank and could see it was a big tour group – when I looked through my scope, it looked like the same people, so my heart stopped pounding, but as David amusingly said 'thanks for the excitement John'! After all this shenanigans, I headed off to find some birds.

Parked in Meadow Lane, Salthouse and went to look for yesterday's Spotted Flycatcher, but the sallow bush was bare, not even a chiffchaff. It was beautiful walking along the track though and Sedge Warblers were singing all the way along. A couple of Grey Herons flew out of the dyke and settled on the marsh. At Kelling Water Meadows there were only a couple of Black-headed Gulls on the pool, along with a few Woodpigeons on the edge and some Egyptian Geese. Two Stonechats and some Linnets were a bit further along in the brambles and on the fence line. Walked back to my car.

Went to Coastguards and had 40 winks. Ended the day at Glandford Ford and saw a Barn Owl in the field, a Whitethroat, Great Spotted Woodpecker and a Grey Wagtail. Drove home in daylight.

A very busy day, plumber came to fit new shower, took Mother food shopping and to the bank to sort out the on-line food shopping situation, then to fish 'n' chip for parents. It was lovely to see Miranda who works in Barclays and who I used to go to school with at Holme CP School – she kindly told me that we (as in my sisters and I) were in the Lynn News today – a 'down memory lane' picture of Holme school – the last picture that was taken of the pupils, Headmaster Mick Ramsey and teacher June Story – wonderful memories. Mick Ramsey was a serious birder who lived in Hunstanton and has many years of records of his seawatches at the cliffs, recorded in the NOA reports etc, sadly he passed away in January 2011. Didn't get out birding until mid afternoon.

Kelling Water Meadows
I have never seen so many Painted Lady Butterflies as I walked along Meadow Lane, they seemed to be everywhere. A fabulous Spotted Flycatcher was in a sallow bush, along with a Chiffchaff. 2 Stonechats up near the pool and 2 Med Gulls flew over the shingle ridge and also a couple of Kestrels. It was a horrible sticky heat, not comfortable at all, but got some relief whilst sitting on the shingle for a while. Wish some of these Bee-eaters would fly over MY head!

Gramborough Hill, Salthouse
There was an Avocet feeding in the pool and Linnets and a Whitethroat were in the bushes, but nothing else of note. Several more Painted Ladies here also. I spent a long time watching and attempting to photograph the Sand Martins on the sandy cliff. They were magical to watch and I could have stayed until dark, but felt very tired, trudged back to my car as the sun was setting and drove home.

Excitement, Drama & Red Hot News!

It killed me to get up this morning, when the alarm went off. I hardly slept the night before and spending the entire day at Minsmere with a two hours drive each way, shattered me completely. I eventually crawled out of bed. It was a beautiful sunny day again.

Arrived at the Skoda garage for my appointment at 8.50am and was wheeling and dealing until 11.30am! There's bad news and good news! Since yesterday, all four Rallye Green Skoda Fabia cars that were available, have already been sold! The good news is I'm still having Rallye Green, but will have to wait for it to be built – this means I won't be flying about in my new green machine for three months! All good things come to those that wait! BUT, I got some brilliant extras including a cool Panoramic Sunroof to #lookup at Eagles when driving (only joking – have to say this as I know at least one policeman who reads my blog!), so excited! Also free extras included mudflaps, door sill covers, boot mat, a *£500 fuel card (*as offered in their brilliant THE BIG SKODA EVENT 4-9th June). I didn't know that some new cars are not being built with CD players anymore, I will now have to get with it and either copy music onto a USB stick or link to music via mobile, as this new Fabia doesn't have a CD player I found out only today! I took a while reading small print, calculating etc and finally signed on the dotted line. Massive thanks to Sales Executive Sam and Manager Guy for all their help and patience.

When I got home, I had planned to go birding, but this didn't happen. The rest of the day disappeared. Phoned for car breakdown quotes and choose the AA in the end as they were the cheapest – need 3 months, just to cover me until I get new car. My previous breakdown was included in the price of my current car and ended in March – too risky to drive for another three months without cover!

My shower has been playing up over the last couple of weeks – the temperature has been too hot and it won't alter, whatever setting you change it to. Of course, I have only had this shower just over the 2 year warranty period – I'm sure they make them to break down just after this! I discovered this afternoon that the shower now only runs freezing bloody cold, not the tiniest bit of warm water AND my hair needs washing – its going to be torture! Phoned the same plumber who installed the shower and he's coming out at 8am tomorrow to see what type of shower (I requested cheapest you can get) I need to match the fittings/pipes. So that's going to cost me!

Whilst surfing the net this afternoon and sorting my daily mass of emails (mostly junk), I was suddenly alerted to a hissing noise coming from the kitchen – alarmed, I rushed into the room and looked at all appliances and couldn't see anything! I then realised the noise was coming from the stairs (walk in) cupboard – to my horror when I opened the door, an aerosol can of cycling oil spray was jetting out all its contents from a hole at the side of the can!!! I sighed massively as I discovered it had spread over most items in the cupboard including the walls, door, floor, hoover, bags etc and the list goes on!!! I cleaned up some, but haven't got the time to do the cupboard properly today, it will have to blinking well wait! For goodness sake! I have never known an aerosol can to do this! Have you?

RED HOT NEWS!
Next week I'm in the audience on UNSPRUNG!!!!
I will let you know which day, next week! However, I'm back at work and had to make a special request to have two hours holiday, so I can get there in time! SO EXCITED!!!

MINSMERE RSPB!!!

Cream-spot Tiger Moth (Arctia villica)
One of the Highlights of the day!

Springwatch? Summerwatch! It was absolutely stifling hot today at Minsmere RSPB!

Left my house ridiculously early and arrived at Minsmere at 7.15am. It was cold first thing, but I was dressed appropriately. Headed straight to Island Mere Hide, where I met people that had been watching 7 different Bitterns since daybreak! I had to wait a while before I saw one and then had a few more distant fly pasts from at least two Bitterns. Early bird catches the worm, I wasn't early enough! Met a very nice lady called Nat who was very chatty and was intrigued that I birded alone. I had a wonderful time soaking up the magnificent scenery from this spectacular hide. Reed Warblers, Reed Buntings, Great Crested Grebes, Marsh Harriers, Swans and fluffy cygnets, Cetti's Warblers singing and Bearded Tits pinging. Common Terns hovered, then dived into the pool, right in front of the hide! Hirundines filling the skies, magical. The Springwatch cameras were set up in the dyke for Spineless Simon! There is a pop-up cafe (as its called) in the woods on route to this hide, which is an added addition, whilst Springwatch is here. I was disappointed not see any Adders on the 'Adder Trail', I waited for a while, but no luck.

At South Hide I heard and watched 2 Med. Gulls fly overhead and land somewhere on the scrape at 10.45am. Lots of hirundines fly catching. Such beautiful scenery as I walked along this path, heading towards the sluice gate – several large scrapes/pools with Little Egrets and various ducks, Lapwings etc. It was seriously hot now and I had far too many layers on. Lots of things have changed since I last visited this fabulous reserve and now its even better, I can't recommend a visit to the reserve highly enough – it has such a diverse range of habitats.

At the sluice gate I headed towards Sizewell B and searched all the bushes throughly for migrants – I was disappointed, as I only found a handful of Linnets and a single Whitethroat, not another bird anywhere. However I did find something very exciting – I suddenly became aware of a very large, bright and strikingly pretty moth/butterfly, which overall looked orange as it fluttered around at speed and then zoomed off in the distance. I kept my bins on it until it landed and then quickly caught up with it and managed to get some iphone pics and SLR pictures. Unfortunately though, I didn't manage to get any in flight, it was far too quick. It was such a striking moth, with its black body and large cream patterned splodges and orange/red body and black antenae, but I could't recall having seen one before. I was thinking Garden Tiger, but knew this wasn't right. Phoned my Mother for assistance who informed me that it was probably a Cream-spot Tiger! From the Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland: "Status and Distribution" – Resident. Local. Locally frequent in south-west, southern and south-east England, East Anglia and South Wales, and most frequent on or near the coast, and on heathland. Widespread and frequent in the Channel Islands." So pleased with my find, but it was a long walk back to the sluice! I also found a Male Broad-bodied Chaser perched on a bramble which I managed to get a photo of.
Cream Spot Tiger Moth by the sluice bushes.

I headed towards East Hide and along the path to the hide I watched a Spotted Flycatcher in the bushes at 11.30am – so beautiful to watch and managed to get a record shot, as it flitted about amongst the branches of willows. I confirmed my Cream-spot Tiger with an RSPB member of staff here, thanks. In East Hide, I sat next to some people who were new birds and I could see they were struggling with ID, so named a bird for them... a Black-tailed Godwit and then helped them with all the others, perhaps I should be a 'hide helper' as they are called! Luckily, I did know everything they asked! There was an island full of Common Terns and Black-headed Gulls nesting and one of the gulls was harrassing a tern and I think it had taken a Common Tern chick as it flew off, but couldn't be sure as I had left my scope in the car (glad I did, far too hot to be carrying that around). Lots of general birds here including Redshanks, Oystercatchers, ducks, Lapwings, Barnacle Geese etc.

Sat on the shingle beach to cool down, but this was a mistake, the shingle was red hot and there was no sea breeze, I got up 2 minutes later! Headed along the North Wall where there were lots of people watching Bearded Tits zip about across the two reed beds. A Bittern flew across and also a Marsh Harrier. Headed back to the Visitor Centre where I had an ice-cream to cool down. Went back to my car and had an hour's snooze. Returned to the visitor centre to enjoy a cheese scone and nice mug of tea. Met some blog readers – nice to meet you both.

Headed back to Island Mere Hide for the evening. Its quite a walk to this hide when you are feeling tired, but felt compelled to return. The Springwatch team were with the cameras in the dyke, doing checks etc for the show later. I sat in the hide and the light was just as good in here in the evening as the morning. Had a fly past bittern and the same birds as this morning – I noticed on the sightings board a Great White Egret had been seen and I was told by Nat whom I met this morning that it regulary turns up each afternoon. Normally I would have stayed until dusk, as it was so beautiful but it was a good 20 minute walk back to the car and then a two hour journey home, so I headed back. The midges were out in force and ready! I got back to my car just in time. Had a coffee and left around 8pm, getting home at 10.10pm. A fabulous day all round.

Unpacked! Plus Birding!

I was up early, ploughing through all the boxes and eventually finished by mid-afternoon – hurrah! Although an hour and a half was spent sorting something out for Mother, which she had got all in a massive 'tizz' over – long story, won't go into it all, too tired as I type at 23.39! I had a very exciting phone call from Sam at the Skoda garage to inform me, that as from yesterday the 4.9% APR is now  0% APR with their Solutions Personal Contract Plan !!! Excellent, roll on Thursday! I have made my appointment early as there could be rares to find and see!

Flew down town to get some urgent items... printer ink (almost run out), stuff for Mother, then a supermarket run. Flew home and out again to Titchwell RSPB for the evening. As I approached Bircham, there was a police accident sign on the road and staggered cones. There was a massive tree that had fallen across the road and there were vehicles dealing with it – the road was impassable – I hope no one got hurt. I did a detour, got lost and ended up back in the same bl**dy place – how blonde is that!!! Can you believe I had to get the sat nav out to find Titchwell!!! I shouldn't really confess to that, but I had to if I wanted to see the Red-necked Pharalope before dark! I drove along some fabulous back roads I have never driven on before!

I parked up at Titchwell RSPB in Paul's spot (naughty me, slapped wrists). Well, no one knew, there was nobody else there! The wind was still pretty strong, but not cold at all. I walked up to Island Hide and had the entire hide, in fact reserve to myself! I was hoping the Red-necked Pharalope would be close to the hide, but this was not the case! I found it eventually, distantly, what a cracking bird! Always lovely to watch, as they whirl around in a feeding frenzy! There were loads of Avocets and even more Black-tailed Godwits (Warden Paul Eele reports 280 today!) – it was late now, but I was still watching the Red-necked Pharalope at 9.15pm! I was just leaving the hide when two birders walked towards me – it was Malcolm Ware, County Recorder for Fife, Scotland and a friend! They are staying in Norfolk for five day's birding. They had not yet seen the phalarope, so I went back in the hide to point it out to them. We were chatting about all kinds of things and they told me that I have alot of blog followers in Scotland, so HELLO to you all up north! It was really nice to meet them, but I had to go – it was now 9.40pm, crazy! Heard a Cuckoo at 9.45pm! Dropped in some shopping and stuff for Mother and then went back to Lynn. Filled the car up with fuel ready for all the twitching etc I will be doing over the next few days, hopefully!

Talking of Pharalopes – look at this stunning Female Grey Phalarope and here!!! Information and discussion here.

Unpacking To Prepare for Packing!

I have had a very productive day, but equally an incredibly boring and tedious day. Such an exciting holiday I'm having! I have been unpacking all the clothes, cushions, sleeping bags and all materials items etc that were taken away with smoke damage from neighbour's fire. I have been doing this all day, its taking much longer than I expected and hopefully will be finished tomorrow! I will need to do a boot sale now! Good job the weather is crap and there are no birds! Best time to get this out of the way with I suppose though, with fabulous weather arriving at the end of the week!

The wind is howling outside and the house is cold, feels like winter tonight. It doesn't seem possible that we are going to have a heatwave by the end of the week! This dire weather won't help nesting birds at all. Watched SpringWatch and Unsprung this evening – Minsmere was blowing a gale!
