Its exactly a year ago today that I had my serious car accident – I won't ever forget that day. The same day that I saw the Beluga Whale here. It was a very stressful time all round, two days later on the 23rd January I moved into my new house in Scalloway.

Raining here, chilly house, but can't have another electric bill like last month. Daffodils are peeking up through the grass along the driveway – beginning of Spring! Looking forward to seeing lots of lambs skipping about in the fields and hills.

Strong winds commence on Friday and on/off for several days, more ferry disruption. Not quite sure what to do on my birthday next week, weather doesn't look great, but will go out to lunch somewhere and have an exhilarating beach walk in the 70% forecast rain! Planning to visit my sisters in March.

Burn of Njugalswater

Checked out the Burn of Njugalswater, SW of Bridge of Fitch before heading north, nothing found.

Ross's Goose
Scatsta – with Greylag Geese.
Taken with 100-500mm lens and 1.4 converter
FIRST FOR SHETLAND

Just to give you an idea of how far away the Ross's Goose was!
It was just under the cairn you can see on the far ridge

Drove to Scatsta to see the Ross's Goose. I did see it, but this was another dot in the distance, feeding on the grassy hills with Greylags, just south of the air strip at Scatsta. Wasted far too much time balancing the camera on the car door, trying to get a record distant shot.

Burn of Valayre

The Burn of Valayre, which is a Shetland Amenity Trust Community Woodland Project looks a good potential migrant spot. North of Brae, turn onto the B9076 towards Sullom Voe – follow this road for a few miles and the woodland and burn are on the right with a gate signposted ‘Burn of Valayre’ (just before you reach Voxter Outdoor Centre).

I have been in a very low mood lately, so that's why there hasn't been much news and its nothing to do with the weather. Insanely high electric bills have been difficult to accept and now funds almost run out, means its now going to take far longer to finish the house than I first anticipated. Frustratingly I will have to put up with loads of unpacked boxes of books etc for a few months, whilst I save up for the bookcases/room dividers. I haven't seen my sisters since March 2024 and that is also affecting my mood. I have simply been going to work and then hibernating in my house and not wanting to go out at all. A horrible birthday milestone is looming too! Forced myself to get out of the house today though.

Its been one year since I bought my house here in Scalloway, but I wasn't actually able to move in until the 23rd January because of serious snow.

FINALLY!!! After several attempts, I got to see the American Coot today, along with 2 Eurasian Coots. Don't expect any mint pictures, it was a dot in the scope! I tried to photograph it – see pictures below! The light was good today, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to ID it at that distance. Other birds seen on Loch of Spiggie: several Goldeneye, Tufted Ducks, Wigeon++, Teal, 1 Moorhen, 2 Pochard, Little Grebe, Red-breasted Mergansers x 2, Red-throated Divers x 2, a female Pheasant, Turnstone, Redshank, Curlew, lots of gulls.

AMERICAN COOT
Very distant views through scope at Loch of Spiggie

 West Voe Beach

Sanderling at West Voe Beach

Had a lovely walk on West Voe beach, several Turnstone and Sanderling in a feeding frenzie along the shore. 2 Long-tailed Duck on the sea. Huge amounts of seaweed, took lots of photos. Fell over trying to outrun a wave and got the camera covered in sand! Spent ages blowing every grain out, once back at the car. At Grutness there was a Tystie close in by the jetty, nothing else of note.

Whilst out today I suddenly noticed that someone has put a deep dent in my passenger door – its more than a T-cut job – can only have been done in the Tesco carpark or the hospital, looks like a vehicle with a heavy door has been opened onto my door, either a grey or silver vehicle, nice of them to leave a note – highly unlikely!
