South, North & West Road Trip!
Headed south for the Orcas seen heading north west from Sumburgh Head, which I was too late for. I tried to catch up with them at St Ninian's Bay and failed. I was stood scanning the sea at Rerwick, when Hugh Harrop stopped in his car to say he was going to see if the Nightjar was still at Geosetter Burn (which Roger Riddington had found late last night), so I joined him to try and relocate it. Hugh had managed to see it last night too. No luck with the Nightjar, but we could both hear what sounded like a low sub song of Marsh Warbler near the Geosetter bridge for a very short time and then it went silent.
I then decided to look for the pink house at Scousburgh, where someone had seen a male Rosefinch last night. I stood and watched the garden and area for a little while, no sign and only House Sparrows. I headed north as I wanted to have a look at two houses for sale and I also hoped that I may be very lucky and catch the Orcas, if they had continued their journey north. One house was very unique, but too much on its own, too far north for work and needed work doing and the other was stunning on the outside, with mature trees and fabulous garden, but dark inside and too much work needed doing with that too.
Headed west to Sandwick to find another house, which I simply couldn't find! Gave up and went to Melby beach and walked around the cliff area – Ringed Plovers, Oystercatchers, Black Guillemots, Arctic Terns seen. I have been here before I realised, a lovely spot. I then ended up at Norby Beach, where I watched an Otter catching crabs in the sea at fairly close range. Long scenic drive home.
More tomorrow.......

MY FIRST ORCAS At The Knab, Lerwick, Shetland!!!
I have just seen my first ORCAS!!!
Suddenly they appeared!!! One Orca with two calves! Just WOW!!! I watched and photographed them at quite a distance between 10.23pm and 10.32pm! Rubbish light, but got some shots, I just couldn't believe I was finally watching my first Orcas and this late in the evening too! It was a total joy to be here amongst so many excited youngsters and older folk, you couldn't make up this experience and I won't ever forget it!!! The Orcas were last seen heading for the lighthouse on Bressay. I headed home smiling like a cheshire cat!!! 😻
Update: Hugh Harrop let me know that this is "The 64s pod" and "the bull is 196/Sanday". Fascinating and amazing resource here: "Scottish Killer Whale Photo Identification Catalogue 2021"

Offer on My First Shetland Property was "Unsuccessful"
https://www.estateagencyshetland.co.uk/properties/maranatha
I'm completely gutted. This house was a dream. The garden I loved even more! The property and especially the garden, is far better than the pictures in the link portray. So many plants and shrubs in that garden and extremely sheltered and secluded. A Montana clematis was in in full bloom, which was a large feature in our family garden at Holme. I imagined seeing so many good birds there – a local person told me that they had watched an Arctic Warbler in that garden! Views of Sumburgh Head, lighthouse and Fair Isle were also a stunning bonus and the Virkie Pool was 3 minutes walk away! When the owner showed me around on Saturday, I became quite emotional about the entire property and totally fell in love with it. I felt that I had struck up a good rapport with the owner and told him I worked for the hospital and it would be my forever home etc etc.
It was a very sad story, the property was empty and ready to move into, as the lady who owned it passed away and her brother was now having to sell the property – she only purchased it two years ago and like me, completely fell in love with the place and offered a good amount above the asking price, her brother told me. I did lots of detective work on-line that evening and found out that the property was advertised at offers above £185,000 and sold for £203,000 in 2021.
After viewing the property on Saturday, I had a second viewing on Monday, along with a builder to ask advice about a few things. All good and feeling totally happy with my decision, I offered far more than I should have done, far more and this would have left only a small amount in the bank for any emergencies and sensibly not enough, but I really wanted this gorgeous property and I knew that the competition would be fierce. I visualised myself living there and had planned every room and what was going where. Its been a mad scrap finding a solicitor, getting all the paperwork and offer done and I'm exhausted.
I supposed I knew in my heart, that even my maximum cash offer wouldn't be high enough, I had been informed that it was a very popular property, it only came onto the market just over a week ago and the closing date for closed bids, suddenly appeared on the the estate agents website for Thursday 22nd June at 12pm! My bid was submitted just in time, this morning. The property was advertised at offers over £192,000. I guessed that someone with a bottomless bank account, would have thrown in an offer of £240,00 plus.
Its been a tense day at work, I just knew what the email would say I suppose and very sadly I was correct, I had been "unsuccessful". I managed to get out of the estate agents that there were four offers and I had only come third in line, so goodness knows what the top offer was!!! You can never find this out initially, but eventually it does appear on line somewhere, many months later. I couldn't have done any more, I had given it my all.
The only negatives about this property were having to get the external painting done every few years with very expensive Scandinavian paint and the 23 mile trek to work each day. One of the many positives was this property in the far south of Shetland, was at the heart of where most of the rarities are found! I recall seeing a Red-breasted Flycatcher, just two houses along from this one in 2019.
The only positives I can think of now at 10.30pm are that hopefully a better property awaits me and my bank account is still ok!!!

"Da Simmer Dim"
My garden this evening, Lerwick, Shetland
Taken quickly with Apple iphone!
No funky pictures of sunsets, it was overcast and dull this evening. The highlight was my first Shetland Hummingbird hawk-moth, on my sage flowers this evening! I flew outside and managed to get quick a couple of out of focus shots on the phone and then it was gone after about 30 seconds, so good job I didn't mess about getting the Canon R5 out! Noticed some Silver-Y moths in the garden too last night. Still light here at 11pm!
Tomorrow is a big day, which will result in me being on a massive high or low! Fingers crossed! Update tomorrow with fabulous and exciting news or not – more than probably not!

House Viewings, Decisions & Exploring!
Its been a very busy weekend indeed. Viewed a property that I completely fell in love with. Not going to discuss any more yet, about where it is etc etc! Most of today was also taken up with thinking and planning re this potential property.
Today I discovered that Lerwick has some fabulous flower gardens on Olaf Road, "The Jubilee Flower Park" – this was absolutely beautiful to walk round, a stunning array of flowers and shrubs! A large Laburnum tree stood at the entrance, which reminded me of my childhood, as we had one of these in the garden at Holme. There were mature pine trees and a long row of sycamores – an amazing collection with park benches to sit on, no rubbish seen anywhere either! Some people were playing bowls, which is part of the park. I never expected to see such a variety of plants, flowers and trees in one area in Shetland – truly amazing! I wonder how often this little oasis is checked for migrants in Spring and Summer?!
This evening I went to Maywick Beach and watched a gorgeous female Eider with fluffy youngsters on the far end of the beach! Lots of Fulmars nesting on the cliffs, adorned with pink thrift, bird's-foot trefoil and sea campion. The cliffs are an array of colourful flowers just now! Black Guillemots and Arctic Terns seen here also, along with Oystercatchers and Ringed Plovers on the beach. Tons of Starlings plus juveniles in the trees around the farm buildings and Wheatears along Maywick Road. It was late and I had the beach to myself.
Decided to go to St Ninian's Isle. I turned around as soon as I arrived. Several campers vans, which is to be expected at this time of year and people are arriving for "da simmer dim", but I couldn't believe what I could see on the beach, at least eight plus small tracters/beach buggies with all different ages (including lasses) racing around like crazy and seriously churning up the tombolo – it looked awful! I felt really quite shocked seeing this and it surely must be local people, which makes it even more upsetting to see – what about the disturbance of breeding birds there at this time of the year and I hope to goodness no bird's eggs were ploughed into!!! I left feeling very sad at what I had witnessed – I never expected to see that kind of behaviour here.
Pulled in above the cliffs at Rerwick and had stunning views of the beach and turquoise sea below, adorned with seals and pups. Fulmars soaring by and colourful yachts were moored up in the bay. Cruised home and it still wasn't dark when I arrived back!

A BRILLIANT DAY! My House Sale in Norfolk Completed Today!
Glorious weather here in Shetland today and a brilliant day all round!
My house in Norfolk exchanged contracts last week and completed today! The turnaround has been truly amazing. I put my house on the market on 13th March, lots of viewings, offer accepted on 22nd March and now all completed in just over three months! Very impressed with Brittons Estate Agent, especially to Jodie (Property Valuer) who came out to value my house, to Lynne (Viewings Rep) and to all the very polite, jolly and helpful staff in the team. My solicitors Hayes and Storr have also been brilliant throughout and huge thanks to them for their professional and seamless service. Congratulations to first time buyers Chloe and Nathan who now own my house!
Spent all morning cancelling things in relation to house and paying bills. The only utility company that was difficult to deal with, as always was British Gas, no surprise there! Long story short, I couldn't pay my final bill today and have to wait for it to be posted out to me, as they 'have to work it out'..... 'why can't it be done today?' I asked'....! It brings me great joy that I never have to deal with them again!
Now the serious search begins in earnest, for my forever home here in Shetland!!! Exciting times! 😊🎉🎊

WOODCHAT SHRIKE this evening at Bigton!
I had just started a ZOOM call with my sister Lucy this evening, when the WhatsApp Rare Birds in Shetland, bleeped up with Woodchat Shrike just east of Bigton! Found by Rob Fray and also very kind of him to link the exact location to save me time on route, thank you! I couldn't just cut Lucy off as we have not done a ZOOM for a while now, but I still got to see the Woodchat Shrike, along with other local birders. Excellent birders views, as in fairly distant along the fence line, feeding and looking quite relaxed. Thank you to Paul Harvey for letting me look through his scope. Such a stunning bird in the orange evening light. I could hear some of the birders saying it looked like a young male. Took tons of smudgy distant shots.
A Spotted Flycatcher and a Blackbird were perched on the same fence-line and 2 Wheatears also seen in the area. I left and went for a short walk along the Geosetter Burn, then returned to the same spot I had been watching the Woodchat Shrike a bit earlier. Jim Nicholson and another birder were parked up on the road and the Woodchat Shrike was perched on the gate post, opposite the pile of stones and rubble where Rob Fray had found it earlier – it then flew to a post dead opposite us, where I got my best pictures (although still distant) at 22.02! What an evening!

Wester Quarff, Hoswick and Dash to West Burra!
Minn Beach and Kettla Ness Headland
SATURDAY 10th JUNE
A stunning day here in Shetland. In Norfolk, temperatures reached 'sticky hot', but it was a wonderful cool south easterley breeze here in the sunshine, thank goodness I escaped in time!
I spent the morning at Wester Quarff and tried my best to find something exciting. It was so beautiful here and as I was standing watching Swallows skimming over a flower meadow, it felt like a Bee-eater kind of day and indeed later on it was! So many beautiful wild flowers on show and also in people's gardens. Spectacular and tranquil scenery. At the voe at the furthest end, I watched Eiders and Arctic Terns and Gulls were chilling at the eastern most end.
Went to MacKenzies Farm Shop for lunch, to discover that the cafe has closed!!! The shop itself is still running. Headed to Hoswick Visitor Centre for lunch and had lentil soup with bannock, lemon cake and cup of tea. Suddenly..... MEGA news broke on the WhatsApp Rare Birds in Shetland at 13.14 of a BLUE-CHEEKED BEE-EATER on Foula and supplemented with a jaw dropping picture!!!!! I had no idea what to do next, except that I needed to do something fast. Phoned a couple of people for advice and long and short of it was that there were no more flights from Tingwall Airport today and they don't run on Sunday's, so the next flights would not be until Monday (I'm at work, so stuffed). Day trips by boat from West Burra are run daily, dependent on weather conditions from Shetland Sea Adventures. I headed to West Burra and joined Jill and Rob doing the same thing. We chatted to the skipper of the boat, who was working in the shop about getting over there. He told us that the sea was going to be very rough tomorrow and he could take us out, but quote "we would be begging to return as soon as the journey started" it would be that rough! So, next opportunity out would be Monday, again no good for me! Heartbreaking was an understatement.
But, there was no news of the Blue-cheeked Bee-eater after 2.23pm. Was it simply somewhere else on the island and not re-found? There are only eight people living on Foula I was told. Or, is it heading to mainland Shetland?!!! Tomorrow could be, just could be my luckiest day EVER?!
Write up in the Shetland Times HERE
Whilst I was here, I decided to go and have a tour round East Burra, which I have never explored on previous visits. Wheatears, Twite x 1, Blackbird, Starlings, House Sparrows, Hooded Crows and a Red-throated Diver seen in various spots and fascinating to see a different area. Headed to West Burra and on route I stopped by the Easthouse Croft and sat at the picnic table here for a while, with a cheese tattie scone and a coffee. It was chilly now, but still glorious sunshine. Watched a Bonxie fly close past me, when I had left the camera in the car! Arctic Terns, Fulmars over the voe, Ringed Plovers on the beach and a Blackbird singing its heart out close by. So beautiful here, as everywhere is in Shetland.
I ended the day at Minn Beach – a sand tombolo that leads to Kettla Ness headland and presumed I would bump into the famous cat called Buttons (see Facebook page here), who lives outside in the Summer months and greets visitors ambling along the beach and then returns to his owners and home for the Winter! But, very sadly no sign of Buttons?! It was stunning here, truly spectacular light and only two people on the beach and two elderly ladies enjoying an evening walk along the tombola, who remarked as I passed them "its a fresh evening". Lots of sheep and lambs everywhere, Starlings, Oystercatchers and Ringed Plovers on the beach. I walked to the end of the tombola and then walked right along the headland until I reached a geo that was particularly windy, so decided not to get too close to the edge! I flushed a small LBJ here, which I frustratingly couldn't relocate. Meandered back to my car and left here at 10pm – arrived home, still daylight at 10.30pm!

EASTERN OLIVACEOUS WARBLER Again at Quendale, Shetland!
FRIDAY 9TH JUNE
This evening I headed to Quendale Mill again. Met up with Hugh Harrop, who very, very kindly sorted all the settings out on my Canon R5 and a tutorial. AT LAST, I have this camera sorted out to a logical and productive state, SO PLEASED!!! MASSIVE thank you to Hugh, so happy!
Have a lovely time photographing the Eastern Olivaceous Warbler in the evening light, with just Hugh H and two other birders! A Siskin, Chiffchaff, young Blackbird and two Pied Wagtails were also seen, along with House Sparrows dust bathing on the farm track.

EASTERN OLIVACEOUS WARBLER at Quendale, Shetland!
After work this evening, I went to look at a one level property with its own beach and an incredible view, I probably won't be able to afford it though, unless someone wants to add £30,000 to my funds! 😊😉 Its not for sale yet, but will be at some point.
I then headed to Levenwick and parked up along the top road (South Punds) to see if I could get a distant scope view of the Broad-billed Sandpiper. I was just about to get the scope out of the car, when the Shetland RARE WhatsApp group bleeped up with OLIVACEOUS WARBLER at Quendale Mill!!!!! I promptly left!
How lucky was that, I was only 4.5 miles away! Found by Dan Pointon! Thank you very much indeed! Arrived on site to only a handful of birders and was soon watching my first UK Eastern Olivaceous Warbler flittering around feeding amongst the sycamore leaves, WOW!
Everyone else was snapping away with their cameras and all I managed eventually, was some distant smudgy shots as I STILL have not mastered the R5 camera! It wouldn't automatically focus on any setting. I'm thinking of going back to my old faithful Prime 300f4 lens with the 7D Mark II to be honest – I know for a fact that I missed many good shots that I would have got with my old kit, simply because the R5 is not set up correctly.
