Spaced Out!
I slept last night for the first time since all my pain started. The pain patch I was given had kicked in, but the downside is that I could have slept all day and feel totally spaced out! To be honest I have been asleep most of the day. Throughout all of this going on, I have managed to stick to my Carol Vorderman diet!
My mother very bravely went to Eileen Buxton's funeral today. Eileen and her husband Geoff (who passed away a good few years ago) were NOA members from the 'good old days'. A few of you may remember Eileen – she worked extremely hard, making lots of craft type gifts and donated them to the NOA for my father to sell at Holme Bird Observatory. I can remember her clearly, she had a lovely smile and was always laughing. I know its sounds selfish, but I simply couldn't have gone – its far too soon to go to the Mintlyn Crematorium where my father was cremated, I'd have been a mess. My mother is tougher than me! Sophie Barker very kindly took her to the funeral. Rest in peace dear Eileen x

Not a good start to the year!
I'm at home this week and not very well at all. Severe pain struck me on Saturday and even more frustrating is that this pain is at its worst throughout the night. For some weird reason 'it' (what ever it is) doesn't like me lying down – how cruel. This has resulted in me having no proper sleep since the weekend. I don't really want to go into too much detail, but I have been to the doctors twice and spoken to them on the phone, had a blood test etc and am now waiting for an 'urgent' scan. Today I was given a 7 day pain 'patch' to take along with Voltarol and Paracetamol. I'm putting off going to bed, as I know from my current pain (none of the tablets are working) that I'm not going to be able to sleep again. I might take myself to A&E this morning!

Choseley and Titchwell RSPB!
I had an entire night of no sleep, due to pain (long story), so didn't get out very early, which I was really sad about as it was a beautiful day for birding and photography. Waxham and Cromer are not round the corner from me, but that is where I was heading today. There are some nice pictures of the Hume's Warbler at Waxham here, here and here.
Took some of my homemade lentil and vegetable soup to my mother for her lunch. Dug in the Christmas tree in the garden as a perch for birds (until it dies) – a Blackbird and Robin dived in to feast on disturbed worms, within seconds of me going into the house.
Big flock of Goldfinches at Choseley Barns this afternoon, but no luck with any Redpolls – a Kestrel was perched on telegraph wires as I left.
I had a massive count of 26 Marsh Harriers in the roost this evening at Titchwell RSPB, which I was very pleased with. However, I see that another birder counted 42 this evening! Also had close views of 2 Barn Owls and a Cetti's Warbler was singing by Patsy's Pool. It was extremely cold as I returned to my car.

Carol Vorderman's Detox for Life: The 28 Day Detox Diet and Beyond!
So the new year is here and I need to take control of my body and mind! Yesterday I decided to start the Carol Vorderman's Detox for Life diet, which I have done a few times before over the years. I have the original book, published in 2001 and followed the 'Detox' with excellent results all round. As a vegetarian, its not that difficult to follow really, but if you eat meat, fish and drink alcohol its going to be difficult to maintain! No processed foods are allowed, no animal or by products, no cheese, milk, eggs, wheat products, alcohol, sugar, chocolate etc! Basically, it teaches you that you can survive without any of the naughty foods that most of us crave!
The downside to this diet is that you spend a fortune on buying all the basic ingredients you need. The one item I could not find in King's Lynn was Buckwheat (even Holland and Barrett didn't have this). I have made some really fabulous things today, including vegetable and lentil soup, houmous, a rice dish, baked banana with maple syrup, mixed spice and lemon. I don't really like Rye bread that much, but toasted with cashew nut butter its very nice indeed! It shocks you into realising how utterly crap all the processed foods are, that so many of us consume.
Why are all the good birds, so far east?! I better go and find some at this end of the coast tomorrow. I was too exhausted from work and other jobs last night, to leave my house today. There is a really good selection of birds on offer in Norfolk right now, hopefully there will be more to come – a Snowy Owl would be good please!

NEW YEAR'S DAY!
Titchwell RSPB
It's been a long time since I have not been out early on new year's day – I had a terrible night's sleep and so the first day of the new year was not very eventful at all. I eventually made it out before the day finished, well just about!
I counted 11 Marsh Harriers in the roost this evening! Huge flock of Golden Plovers, Lapwings, Shelducks, Teal, Wigeon, Redshanks, Little Grebes x 3 and a big number of Gulls were in the roost.
It was an extremely high tide this evening and tons of Oystercatchers were all along the shoreline. There were lots of gulls on the sea, but I couldn't identify any Long-tailed Ducks in the dusk! The full moon was silhouetted over the freshmarsh as I walked back in darkness. Surprisingly there was another birder also out here at this time and three youngsters were walking out to the beach, as I headed back to the car park.
Visited my mother for a short time and had a cup of coffee with the banana cake I had made last night. Spent the rest of the evening watching the James Bond film "Spectre and then "Noah", the biblical epic starring Russell Crowe.
