Rare Bird Alert News
MAINLAND
Went birding in the Helendale area in Lerwick straight after work this evening. Walking up to Helendale House I could only just about hear a Blackbird singing – it was almost drowned out by a small black pug type puppy/dog who was barking so ferociously at me that it sounded ten times bigger than it was 😂 – luckily it was behind a fence. Obviously it was guarding its property, but its going to have a very sore throat if it carries on like that! It didn't like me walking or standing still – it must be a new pet as I've never heard any dog barking in this road. Didn't find any birds at all apart from a second Blackbird. Walked up to Briarbanks at the top of Helendale Terrace – I love this little spot and there is a lovely nature pond in someone's garden opposite this large and very grand house, which is backed with many tall mature trees and a fabulous Monkey Puzzle tree in the front garden.
Red-necked Grebe still at marina, Pool of Virkie.
ISLANDS
Black Redstart at Windhouse, Camb, Yell.
I didn't find any Puffins at Sumburgh last night, but Paul H. has seen some off Sumburgh Head today! Julie R. found the first Wheatear in Shetland yesterday and Roger R. had one at Sumburgh today. South westerlies now until Friday evening when it switches SE and very strong winds and rain on Saturday. Warm weather south of Shetland, but no warm spells forecast here looking at the long range weather. We would like some warm south easterlies to bring in some Spring migrants please! 😊
