Rare Bird Alert News
MAINLAND
There was a power cut overnight, but all restored in the morning. Woke up to a light covering of snow and all the hilltops were white! The afternoon turned out lovely with blue skies, rainbows and sprinklings of rain, but still very cold here. Robin in the garden again with the usual birds.
Red-necked Grebe still at marina, Pool of Virkie.
ISLANDS
No news.
At East Voe there were 5 Goosanders and 7 Goldeneyes. At Tingwall Loch in the fields above the loch I was surprised to find three fat Woodpigeons sunning themselves on a mound of grass – I attempted to take a picture of them from the car window, but even winding down the window sadly disturbed them and they flew off. There were also 2 Redshanks in a pool next to them. Lots of Tufted Ducks on the loch and more Goldeneyes, but couldn't see the recent Ring-necked Duck. There were also lots of Oystercatchers, Redshanks and Greylags on the fields above the loch. Lovely afternoon!
