A totally fabulous first day's birding as a Shetland resident – still can't believe I'm here to be honest! Andy Johnson found a stunning Eastern Subalpine Warbler at Clickimin Loch this morning – a beautiful area and such a joy to watch. I wasn't the first to arrive to see this, but there were no more than another four birders in total, what a treat! I spent ages here watching this cracking little bird flitting around feeding and singing. I also saw a Garden Warbler, female Blackcap, Whitethroat, Wren, House Sparrows and Blackbirds.
Levenwick: to try and find my own birds. 3 Ringed
Plovers on the beach. Nothing in the gardens around the beach area apart
from Starlings, Blackbirds and Meadows Pipits. The little house I
nearly put a bid in for, still has its garden thank goodness
Quendale Mill: to try and see the Western Subalpine Warbler. Bumped into a lovely couple who had moved here last September, also from Norfolk and they had left for the same reasons I have. Suddenly I spotted the WSW on the fence line, just beyond the dam. I couldn't believe I was seeing this and on the same day as the Eastern Subalpine Warbler – wow! Too far away to photograph, but fabulous birder's views. So pretty here, with marsh marigolds and other Spring flowers. A few Swallows skimmed over the burn and a cracking Common Redpoll was preening on the fence wire and a Wheatear was having a bath in the stream. Lots of House Sparrows here. Lambs skipping amongst the flowers – an idyllic scene all round.
Quendale Bay: 3 Great Northern Divers, 4 Red-breasted Mergansers, Pied Wagtail, Wheatear.
Hillwell Loch: Great White Egret and surrounding area: Oystercatchers and Curlews.
Pool of Virkie: 25 Dunlin, 5 Ringed Plovers, 1 Black-tailed Godwit, several Shelduck, 1 Redshank.
A foggy drive home and then I had fish 'n' chips to celebrate!
