CORONAVIRUS IN NORFOLK!

THREE CONFIRMED CASES AT THE QEH, KING'S LYNN AND ONE AT THE NORFOLK AND NORWICH HOSPITAL

Reading various social media sites last night, I found it quite shocking, that so many people seemed to genuinely believe that there were not any cases of Coronavirus in Norfolk yet! There will be many, many cases in Norfolk already – far, far more than the four reported cases today. Its obvious! People are being asked to self isolate for 7 days if they have symptoms of a dry cough and or a temperature and only then to ring 111 for advice, if symptoms carry on after that or worsen. The incubation period (we are told) is 5 days. So, imagine all those people that are carrying the virus unknowingly for 5 days, then being ill for another 7 days (some won't self isolate), then ringing 111 and then being advised to go to a Coronavirus pod to be tested. In that 5 day incubation period, that person could have travelled all over the place...... a supermarket, a friend's house, the pub, a restaurant, visiting a relative or friend in hospital and the list goes on! Frighteningly, its going to be a long and scary few months for many, many people.

I'm sure many of my colleagues feel the same as I do right now – the last place we want to be is working, is in a hospital that has Coronavirus, but this is our jobs and as they say 'the show must go on'. There are patients to be looked after – they can't be left to fend for themselves! Also, I knew nothing about the cases in the QEH, until someone texted me to say it was on the EDP website today. There are no toilet rolls or hand sanitisers in King's Lynn today, I discovered and stocks of certain items are all really low.

KEY POINTS TO FOLLOW:
  • Wash hands thoroughly for 20 seconds at least, properly and regularly
  • Don't touch your face at all when out in public... eyes, nose, mouth AT ALL
  • Use hand sanitiser (if you have any!) when you return to your car OR
  • Wash hands properly as soon as you get home before you touch anything
  • Wash your mobile phone (after turning off) using a micro cloth with small amount of soap or washing up liquid and water, squeeze cloth and lightly rub over phone (avoiding the cable point and speaker), then rinse with water and dry phone.
  • Always cough or sneeze into a tissue
  • Avoid public places where avoidable eg, pub, restaurant, cinema etc
  • DO NOT visit a pharmacy, GP or hospital if you think you have Coronavirus – do the following:
  • Self-isolate at home for 7 days if you live alone – if your symptoms get worse or are not better at the end of 7 days, phone 111 for advice* or on-line https://111.nhs.uk/
  • If you live with other people and ANY of you have symptoms, then you must all self-isolate for 14 days
  • *You may then be tested for the virus at the hospital
BE KIND AND LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER
