I'm actually amused at my bad luck, I dipped on the last Black-faced Bunting at Noness and dipped on this one after work this evening too!!! 😂 Maybe it will be third time lucky one day!
The difference a few minutes can make! I left off work a little later than normal and only saw the news as I was locking up the office. I had to wait to go to the only and nearest loo before I left the building and the person in there before me was so long, I nearly gave up, but simply had to go. These few minutes could have cost me seeing a new bird. Anyway, I headed to Burn of Njugalswater near the Bridge of Fitch and couldn't see any cars or birders, which was a mystery and I went into a mini panic, even more so as the light was fading quickly and time was not on my side. Checked the WhatsApp bird news to see that it had relocated to somewhere near the 'golf course' side of the road. At this point I didn't know exactly where this was, so decided to drive to the end of the road to look for cars and birders, which I did then find. I think I had missed it by about 5 minutes, where it had been watched and photographed on the rough ground just next to the junction. It was last seeing flying across the road into the grass on the golf course side of the road and that was that! Obviously gone to roost for the night. Nice to have a catch up with a few birders on site though. Oh well, that's the way it goes sometimes! I will go and have a quick look between sunrise and when I have to be at work in the morning, which will be a very small window of opportunity, but I think (like the last one) its highly unlikely to be around tomorrow.
I see via our bird news apps that people who hate birders have been moaning on the Shetland Road Conditions FB thread again and one of them was complaining about a birder in a white car in the middle of the road. I think they may have been referring to the white car with a 'local' family in who stopped and smiled and asked what we were all looking at and seemed very interested indeed. Don't presume that the white car that had stopped momentarily on the side of the road was one of those awful horrible birders. Anyone would think we were axe murderers for goodness sake!!!!! Birding is a much loved hobby, just like fishing, walking, knitting, sport activities, going to the gym, crafting, baking and the list goes on. Just because you are not interested in nature and birding yourself, there is no need to hate on those that enjoy it. We are all different and at the end of the day, its about what you enjoy doing and makes you happy 😊 Peace to all!
Hugh Harrop ALWAYS makes me chuckle, so I have had just had to screenshot what he posted on that FB Shetland Road Conditions page rant, to presumably try and lighten the mood:
