Camera Course – Week Two
Thursday 10th February
I was one of two people who was not able to print out their assignment as I had not been able to connect my new printer in time. Another assignment has been set for next week, so now need to pull my finger out!
After returning home I finished the printer installation and printed out my first picture as a test and the results were spectacular! It was wonderful looking at my Pallas's Warbler shot on a glossy print! The printer is a Canon Pixma iP4850.

Pipex Problems
I could not access the internet at all last night which was very frustrating as I needed to email people etc. Its back this morning at 7am though, which means it was a Pipex problem and not me thank goodness. But when I googled Pipex broadband I found a lot of unhappy customers including people who had tried to switch to BT with massive problems!!!

I been working with one of the most interesting, hilarious characters this week on my ward that I have ever met. Its so frustrating that I can't talk about this lady as she has so many fascinating stories to tell and what she did for a living was so incredibly interesting. I can't even begin to give a clue to her job and something amazing she did which resulted in her saving alot of people's lives as it might give her ID away and I would be dismissed immediately! Also there are very few people that make me cry with laughter and this lady most certainly did - she is exceptionally funny! A wonderful lady who hopefully will be leaving us soon, but for my sake I would like her to stay permanently!
A frantic day and Mother's Birthday!
What a manic day!
Lunchtime at work I was spitting pips and that's putting it mildly - went to my car as needed to go to my sister's in my 45 minute break to collect something to save me time this evening and to my absolute disbelief, SOMEONE had blocked me in with their car, in fact not only me, but also the car next to mine aswell. I left a blunt 'please remove now' message under their window wiper. Walked back to the hospital, asked around a couple of wards to find out who's it was with no results. Then went to the correct dept. to complain about this and all the relevant people were at lunch! Next mission find the carparking wardens who happily slap tickets on people's cars if they are incorrectly parked - where are they when you want them!!!!!! I noticed when I went back outside that the car had now been moved, but WHERE? I was so angry that I had missed catching who it was! I was fuming by now! Yeah... they had moved the car, but it was too late for me to go out now! I now had about 3 minutes to each my lunch before returning to work. The selfish person that did this had no idea how that altered my whole evening! Its a good job I didn't catch them! I have kept the reg number of the car and will be looking out for it. I don't forget! In case any of you are wondering - no I don't let things go very easily!
Anyway back to much more important things - today is my mother's birthday! When I finished work I had to crawl through commuter traffic to get to my sister's to collect her present for my mother and going back the same way again through heavy traffic (which is what I wanted to do lunchtime when there is much less traffic). I then got petrol and flowers on route and then picked up a surprise of Vegetable Biryani and 2 Peshwari Nans from Northgate Indian Restaurant in Hunstanton for mother and I for tea. Father hates indian food, can't even bare the smell - he sat in a different room! Had a nice chat with parents then had to wrap another present for Lucy's (sister) birthday tomorrow and deliver that back to King's Lynn. Very inconsiderate of my mother to go and have her second child the day after her birthday!!!!!!! Got home after 9pm - shattered and much too tired to even possibly think about installing new printer. So I will just have to hope that when I get home tomorrow night, that a miracle happens. I will have 2 hours to get my tea (thats not going to happen) install printer, get photos out and get to camera course by 7pm (Ha ha!)

A Sunny day for a Naturalist
I booked some time off work in the latter half of the morning to pay my respects to Mick Ramsay. His funeral was today in King's Lynn.

It was a beautiful, glorious sunny day and the birds were singing like it was spring. This was especially fitting today. A perfect day. It was one of the most beautiful services I have been too. The readings by his son Andrew and daughter Heather in celebration of his life were beautiful and deeply compassionate. Mick's favourite poem was read and also one that he had written, which I genuinely thought was brilliant!
Also just before the service started I met an elderly gentleman who used to sell Lug worm bait to my father when he lived at the Firs House at Holme with his mother (Grannie Hess)!!! My father dug Lugworms to make ends meet in the '60's pre my arrival into this world!
After the service Andrew told me how his father took him to see a 'Houbara' (MacQueen's Bustard) at Minsmere area in 1962.!!!!*

Competition - Theme: "Up Above Us"
Fascinating evening. Order of the evening: There were 18 entries - everyone had a score sheet and you had to rate each picture 1-10. As my eyes scanned along the entries, my eyes immediately fell on the one picture which stood out from all the rest and did in fact win! Someone commentated on each picture that was submitted and asked the photographer to reveal themselves and explain how, why etc they took the shot. Teabreak and cake was enjoyed at half time (excellent cooking from someone!) The other pictures I gave high scores to all came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place - I make a good judge! I won't describe all the pictures to you as it would take forever - see the website for the winning pictures (soon) http://www.klcameraclub.co.uk/

The pollution will fall throughout West Norfolk, posing a risk to our health, and the cost to Norfolk taxpayers will be around £500 million over 25yrs. Yes, we've got to do something with our rubbish, but burning it is not the answer, particularly when there are safer and cheaper ways of dealing with it.
At the bottom of this email, is a 1 minute summary of the main reasons why respected scientists, doctors, engineers, economists and even our MPs are taking a stand against this incinerator. If you care about West Norfolk, please join them and vote "No". Your ballot paper will be sent to you on or around 14 February, and it must be returned by 28 February.

This incinerator has been promoted as being well regulated, a provider of cheap electricity to the town, a saver of the taxpayer's money and poses no significant risk to public health. Please read what scientists, engineers, doctors and economists think:
1) Modern incinerators release large quantities of microscopic particles that can travel many miles. They contribute to cancer, heart attacks & asthma. Filters trap most of the larger heavier particles, so those who promote incineration claim filters are effective. However, a Freedom of Information Act request to the Environment Agency confirmed the majority of the smaller & most dangerous particles are not trapped by even the ‘Best Available’ filters.
2) Cancer-causing chemicals, including dioxins, will be released into the air. Others are left in the incinerator fly-ash which will be land-filled. Just 0.00006 grams is lethal for some animals. Dioxins enter humans via food and can cause cancer. Incinerator emissions of toxic chemicals such as dioxins, are checked only a few days a year. There are numerous reports of emission breaches & accidents at incinerators throughout the UK and the lack of action taken by regulators.
3) The incinerator will bring an extra 900+ lorries a week around Lynn, creating pollution & congestion. The Highways Agency is already concerned about this.
4) There are alternative ways of dealing with our rubbish rather than burning it. Counties such as Cambridgeshire & Cumbria use modern recycling & composting technologies. Cambridgeshire already recycles & composts 71% of their waste, and has a target of 81%. Norfolk presently recycles 43% and Norfolk County Council’s own figures show this stalling at 55.4% once the incinerator is up and running.
5) According to Norfolk County Council’s own figures, the cost to Norfolk's taxpayers over 25 years will be approximately £500 million. Better technologies are available & could save many millions of pounds, without blighting King's Lynn.
6) Norfolk County Council says the incinerator will create 40 full time jobs. This is very poor value for money. They don’t mention that alternative recycling options create far more jobs.
7) Norfolk County Council claimed the incinerator will provide "power to 36,000 homes", but now admit residents will not get cheaper energy.
8) Incinerators can be an expensive mistake. 29 US towns have filed for bankruptcy due to costly incinerator programmes. Kent County Council already regret their recent contract.
9) In a Norfolk-wide consultation in 2008, the public said they wanted more ‘recycling & composting’, and NOT incineration. Only 39 people from across the whole of Norfolk said yes to incineration. West Norfolk County Councillors voted for incineration, ignoring public opinion. This referendum is also about protecting our local democracy.
10) Norfolk County Council has circulated misleading information, which it refuses to withdraw. Scientists disagree with the council.

A Busy, Expensive Day with no Birds!
I have not had time to go birding today (sad face). The winds are ferocious here, so not an ideal day to go out birding anyway. Had a nice lay-in this morning as last week has been manic.
Spent the morning researching my Epson Stylus Photo R1800 Printer that I purchased a few years ago now and I am totally ashamed to say I have not connected it up yet. When I attempted to connect it to my old G4 it wouldn't play ball. Now I have my MacBook Pro I am hoping it will. Only problem is, the inks I bought for it are now infuriatingly out of date and they are not cheap at all - in fact when I went to PC World the bill would have come to an astonishing £174.00! and no I didn't buy them. You can't use inks three years out of date as it clogs the head of the printer and it costs more to replace this than to buy a new one! After much research on the net I realised I would be better to purchase Permajet's continuous ink systems, see: http://www.permajet.com/product/113/Eco-Flo_Epson_R800_R1800_.html and refills here:

Plan B: I purchased a Canon Pixma iP4850 Multifunction Inkjet Printer £99 from PC World in King's Lynn and a extra set of Inks which had 10% off when bought at the same time as the printer. Also paid for 3 years cover which was quite cheap. They didn't have any in stock, but one is coming from another store on Monday.

Bought an 1930s Barley Twist Draw Leaf Table out of a second hand furniture shop in King's Lynn for £30 - well it was more than that, but that's what I got it down to! I bought this to extend my computer work station area. I would have preferred something modern but it would have cost a fortune to buy and this table is solid as a rock and will last until I am pushing up daisies!
Went to my parents this afternoon to deliver some shopping and also mother's birthday card and present for next week. There had been quite a major accident at the Babingly Dip or locally known as 'Cat's Bottom' which is the big dip just before Wolverton (before the turn off for Golden Pheasants) - several mangled cars, hope it was better than it looked! This piece of road is notorious for accidents. Father gave me a massive typing job to do, which will take a very long time to complete. Where has the day gone! I have not even done my photo assignment yet for my course - oh dear! I need two weekends in one this week!

When I attempted to connect it to my old G4 it wouldn't play ball. Now I have my MacBook Pro I am hoping it will. Only problem is, the inks I bought for it are now infuriatingly out of date and they are not cheap at all - in fact when I went to PC World the bill would have come to an astonishing £174.00! and no I didn't buy them. You can't use inks three years out of date as it clogs the head of the printer and it costs more to replace this than to buy a new one! After much research on the net I realised I would be better to purchase Permajet's continuous ink systems, see: http://www.permajet.com/product/113/Eco-Flo_Epson_R800_R1800_.html and refills here:

Plan B: I purchased a Canon Pixma iP4850 Multifunction Inkjet Printer £99 from PC World in King's Lynn and a extra set of Inks which had 10% off when bought at the same time as the printer. Also paid for 3 years cover which was quite cheap. They didn't have any in stock, but one is coming from another store on Monday.

Bought an 1930s Barley Twist Draw Leaf Table out of a second hand furniture shop in King's Lynn for £30 - well it was more than that, but that's what I got it down to! I bought this to extend my computer work station area. I would have preferred something modern but it would have cost a fortune to buy and this table is solid as a rock and will last until I am pushing up daisies!
Went to my parents this afternoon to deliver some shopping and also mother's birthday card and present for next week. There had been quite a major accident at the Babingly Dip or locally known as 'Cat's Bottom' which is the big dip just before Wolverton (before the turn off for Golden Pheasants) - several mangled cars, hope it was better than it looked! This piece of road is notorious for accidents. Father gave me a massive typing job to do, which will take a very long time to complete. Where has the day gone! I have not even done my photo assignment yet for my course - oh dear! I need two weekends in one this week!

Camera Course - Week One
I have booked onto a camera course for 5 weeks. Its something I have always wanted to do, but most of them are so incredibly expensive. This course was very reasonably priced, as long as you joined the King's Lynn Camera Club! 10 people on the course and held locally. It was quite shocking to find out how little I actually knew about my camera!! It would probably have helped if I had looked through the manual, but have not really looked in it since buying the camera!
The course is run by Nigel Downer ARPS who has been a freelance photographer for 20 years and is Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS). Nigel is also a professional teacher in photography, having been head of the photographic department at Richmond College for 8 years and a period lecturing part-time at the College of West Anglia, King's Lynn.
I will confess, my Epson Stylus Photo R1800 Printer which I bought a couple of years ago has never been used! I have never got round to connecting it up! Well I will have to now, as each week we are being set assignments and I have to print out my results to bring next Thursday! Life is incredibly busy right now. Its a good job its not migration time! Saturday is going to be a very full day all round and also birthday presents to buy and deliver for my middle sister Lucy and my Mother who's birthday's are next week. Working most of Sunday. Phew!
Oh and its seriously windy here in King's Lynn!

Natural Surroundings under new management
Bayfield Estate, Glandford Road, Norfolk.
Now being managed by Steve Hinder and Andrew Cannon.
The "Little Cafe in the woods" is open now and you can also walk around the grounds for free at the moment until they get the place up and running properly hopefully for Easter, after which they will charge an entry fee for the gardens.
They also need some volunteer help and donations of materials, see their website for details:
